Maurine Miller

Maurine “Suzie” Miller, 83, of Palmetto, Fla., formerly of Dimondale, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000.

Mrs. Miller was born July 4, 1916 in Jackson, the daughter of Loren and Rena (Brown) Gleason. She worked at Oldsmobile for 27 years, until her retirement in 1982.

Surviving are her daughter, Joan (Tony) Bierens of Palmetto, Fla.; son, Richard (Juanita) Retzloff of Edmore; brothers, William (Shirley) Gleason of Lansing and Lynn (Betty) Gleason of Charlotte; grandchildren, Randy Retzloff of Montana, Robin Retzloff of Florida, Dan Wells of Lansing, Scott Wells of Harrison, Allen Sidel of Morris, John Sidel of North Carolina; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Paul Miller in 1973 and Wilbur Retzloff in 1976; three grandchildren and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Feb. 28 at Lansing Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 5400 W. St. Joseph, Lansing, with Pastor Paul Yeoman and Pastor Daniel Towar officiating. Interment was at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Lansing.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Lansing Seventh Day Adventist Church Community Services Center.

William Moehring

William Driver Moehring, 80, of Florida, formerly of Charlotte, died Jan. 11, 2000 in Florida.

Mr. Moehring was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of William and Grace (Van Meter) Moehring. He was an electrical and mechanical engineer and founded the Michigan Magnetics in Vermontville and World Magnetics in Vermontville and World Magnetics of Traverse City. HE held 17 patents in the manufacturing of magnetic heads. His Navy service was aboard the USS Enterprise during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Rhoda Tennis of Steinhatchee, Fla.; two daughters, Kathleen (David) Lake of Charlotte and Rebecca (Joseph) Lovato of Grand Ledge; four grandchildren, William Lake, Jessica Lake, Michael Lovato and Miranda Lovato; and one nephew, Mark Moehring of Florida.

Services are today, Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment is in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Maple Valley Scholarship Fund.

Rev. Forrest Mohr

The Rev. Forrest Mohr, 88, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Charlotte and Lansing, died July 18, 2000 in Grand Rapids.

Rev. Mohr was born June 11, 1912 in Brooklyn, the son of George and Minnie (Jacobs) Mohr. He was an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church for 33 years, serving in Lawrence Avenue UMC in Charlotte, and churches in Jonesville, Lake Odessa, Boyne City, Lansing and Reed City. He was the founding pastor and built the Christ UMC in Lansing.

He is survived by two sons, David (Judith) of Manchester, Conn. And William (Jo Ann) of Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren, Dawna (Richard) Tapia, Elizabeth (John) Franco, Brian (Dawn) and Scott; four great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Christopher Tapia and Kyle and Eric Mohr; and one brother, Clarence of Tawas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie in 1998.

Services are Saturday, July 22 at Christ UMC, 517 W. Jolly Road, Lansing, with the Rev. Laurie Haller, officiating. Interment is in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Litchfield.

Hazel W. Morgan

Hazel W. Morgan, age 72 of Eaton Rapids, died after a lifetime of much love and happiness, and peacefully went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with A.L.S., on Thursday, May 11, 2000. She was born December 29, 1927 in London, England, the daughter of Robert and Ann (Wright) Blackford. She came to America on October 22, 1948 and was employed by Casa Nova Restaurant for 27 years and the Sheraton Hotel in Lansing for 6 years. Hazel was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids. Preceding her in death are 2 sons, Brian and Jamie; parents, Robert and Ann; and 2 sisters. She touched so many hearts with kindness, all will remember her with love, and she leaves us with everlasting memories! The family would like to give our deepest thanks to all who cared for Hazel, Eaton Rapids Medical Staff, Ingham Medical Hospital, University of Michigan Hospital, as well as visiting nurses, ALS foundation and Tri-County Office on Aging; with a special thank you to daughter, Deborah Martin and granddaughter, Jasmin Martin for all the care and comfort over the last few years.

Surviving are 10 children, Helen (Jim) Strong, Sue Morgan, Robert (Debra) Morgan, Raymond (Angela) Morgan, Jeffrey (Mary Beth) Morgan, Deborah Martin, Michelle Morgan, Leonard (Kyle) Morgan, Terry Sparks and Chuck Oliver; 42 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Esme (Alfred) Alcazar of Pensacola, FL, Hilda (Ivan) Lee and Freda Manning; 2 brothers, Robert and Raymond Blackford all of England; several nieces and nephews and friends.

Mass of the Christian burial was held Monday, May 15th from the St. Peter Church, Eaton Rapids. A Rosary was held Sunday evening at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial was in the Munger Cemetery in rural Eaton Rapids. Pall bearers were Jerry Warfield, Mark Shock, Steve Shock, Jeremy Cripe, Jeff Cripe and Donald Morgan; Honorary Pallbearers were John and Al Alcazar. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the ALS Association, 678 Front St. N.W., Suite 232, Grand Rapids, MI 49504 in memory of Hazel W. Morgan.

Donna Irelan Morris

Donna Irelan Morris, age 74 of Dimondale, died July 28, 2000 at her home. Mrs. Morris was a loyal employee of First of American Bank, now National City, for 25 ˝ years. She did volunteer work for M.D.A. and also Sparrow Hospital’s Surgical Lounge (and was its President for two years) Mrs. Morris attended Mt. Hope Church, was a life member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Post 995, Bitely and was their first Gold Star Mother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 15 years, Edward W. Irelan, her husband of 31 years, Carl R. Morris, and her son, Raymond L. Morris, who was killed in action in Vietnam.

Surviving are two sons, Donald E. (Lynne) Irelan of Asheville, NC, Rocky (Pam) Irelan of Eaton Rapids; two daughters, Edna Umbarger of Eaton Rapids and Vicki (John) Witzke of Johnstown, NY; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; her brother, Albert Austin; and special cousins, Janalee& Lester McClure.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Field & Leik Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Harris officiating. V.F.W. Auxiliary honors were given. Interment was in Dimondale Cemetery.

Jack Morris

Jack Emerson Morris, 79, of Charlotte died Feb. 24, 2000.

Mr. Morris was born May 20, 1920 in Carmel Township, the son of Vern and Zesto Belle (Courtright) Morris. He was a millwright and maintenance worker for Maeward Couplings of Olivet. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He is survived by one daughter, Shirley Morris of Charlotte; four sons, Daniel of Grand Rapids, Paul (Faye) of Alma, Timothy (Sue) of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mark of Charlotte; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and three sisters, Valdeen (Roy) Young of Lakeland, Fla., Mary (Larry) Galvin of Manton, and Ruth “Mead” (Jack) Cleaver of Charlotte.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Merritt) in 1991, one son, David in 1946, and one brother, Richard.

Services were Feb. 26 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Mark Booth officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Frederick Moul

Frederick Luther Moul, 85, of Charlotte, died Monday, March 20, 2000.

Mr. Moul was born Dec. 15, 1914, the son of Clinton and Elsie (Stauffer) Moul. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a tool and die maker for Aluminum Extrusion and Hoover Corporation in Charlotte. He was active in the VFW, where he had served as quartermaster and the American Legion.

Surviving are nine nieces, nephews, many friends and comrades.

Graveside services were held March 22 at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Military honors were given by VFW Post 2406 at Pray Funeral Home.

Grace L. Mumby

Grace Louise “Sis” (Shaull) Mumby, 72, passed away at Pacific Coast Manor in Capitola, Calif., on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000.

Mrs. Mumby was born in Lansing on Aug. 14, 1928, and grew up in Charlotte. She graduated from Charlotte High School and from Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., and enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Force in 1948. In 1951, while in the Air Force, she contracted polio and was confined to a wheelchair the remainder of her life. In April 1967, she married E.W. “Ted” Mumby in Riverside, Calif. They resided in Watsonville their entire married life. Louise and Ted traveled twice to Lucknow, India, for celebrations honoring them for Ted’s past missionary and athletic achievements there. She was a devout Methodist and very active in church, and was a loving, caring and generous lady.

Surviving are her brother, S. David (Mary) Shaull of Orchard Lake; and nieces, Jan Sackman, Gina Green and Alison Shaull.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted in 1988.

Cremation took place in Watsonville, Calif., and internment of cremains was in Mendon.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Erikka Leighanne Murphy

Erikka Leighanne Murphy, 7, of Olivet died March 5, 2000 as the result of an all-terrain vehicle accident.

Erikka was born in Marshall, one of triplets born to Mark and Suzanne (Schmidt) Murphy. She was a first grade student at the Fern Persons Elementary School, Olivet.

She is survived by her parents; triplet sister, Erinne; two brothers, including triplet brother, Trenton, and another brother, Cameron; her great-grandparents, Leon and Sharon Murphy of Olivet, and Ann and Yuel Case and John and Barbette Schmidt, all of Marshall; and her great-grandparents, James and Verna Aughton of Albion and Mary Duncan of Marshall.

Services were March 8 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Minister Steve Doty officiating. Internment was in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fern Persons Elementary School in Olivet.

James Muzzy

James Muzzy, 77, of Charlotte died Dec. 29, 1999 at his Windsor Township home following a long illness.

Mr. Muzzy was born Feb. 4, 1922 in Owosso, the son of Samuel and Bertha (Schultz) Muzzy. He was a World War II army veteran, member of Disabled American Veterans, and a retired Diamond Reo employee.

He is survived by his wife, Lepha; two stepdaughters, Joan (Brian) Brodberg and Barbara (William) McGuirt, both of Harrison; one stepson, Jack (Cheryl) Cahill of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Viola Belle of Hillsdale and Lois Winkler of Owosso.

Services were Jan. 2 at Field and Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale, with the Rev. John Toth officiating. Military honors were provided by the Disabled American Veterans. Interment was in the Dimondale Cemetery.

Fern Napier

Fern (Gullett) Napier, 67, of Charlotte died Sept. 9, 2000 after an extended illness.

Mrs. Napier was born in Crawford, Ken., the daughter of Kelly and Goldie (Patrick) Gullett and had been a Charlotte resident for about 48 years.

She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Broach of Bradenton, Fla.; two sons, John (Sonya) of Charlotte and Charles (Becky) of Lansing; seven grandchildren, Rochelle Napier, Rosalyn Perry, Nicole Napier, Heidi Napier, Isiah Broach, Nathan Napier and Natalie Napier; one great-grandson, Aryes Napier; two sisters, May Holton of Charlotte and Faye Baldwin of Marshall; and one brother, Homer (Geneva) Gullett of Lansing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Napier in 1973; one sister, Mildred; and four brothers, Marvin, Ray, Jack and Russel “Tip.”

Services were Sept. 13 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Tom Haynie officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice.
