Carolyn Surline

Carolyn Surline, 72, of Meansville, Ga., formerly of Port Huron, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000.

Mrs. Surline was born April 5, 1927 in Port Huron to the late Chester and Winifred (Dolan) Whitford and was a lifelong area resident until she moved to Georgia two years ago. She married Clarence Surline on June 23, 1945, in Port Huron; he died Jan. 5, 1997. She was a member of Sparlingville Baptist Church and the Charles Hammond American Legion Post 8 Auxiliary.

Surviving are her six sons, David Surline, Thomas Surline, Richard (Pamela) Surline and Patrick Surline; five daughters, Carol (Ronald) Schultz, Nancy Herbert, Sherry (Paul) Adolph, Tammy (Todd) Gerstenberg and Patricia (Michael) Lloyd; 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald (Ann) Whitford and Patrick Whitford; a sister, Nancy (Gene) Lemon; and, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Feb. 22 at Pollock-Randall Funeral Home, with Rev. Woodward Nelson officiating. Interment was at Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

David Sutton

David Charles Sutton, 18, of Charlotte, died May 5, 2000.

Mr. Sutton was born Aug. 16, 1981 in Elmhurst, Ill., the son of Charles and Patricia (Meredith) Sutton. He was employed by Meridian Magnesium Products in Eaton Rapids, and affiliated with the Charlotte Assembly of God. He had been a Boy Scout and a member of the Charlotte High School Band.

He is survived by his wife, Jerusha (Baker); one son, Christopher Michael; his parents, Charles and Patricia Sutton; one sister, Virginia Sutton of Alaska; two brothers, Aaron (Tara) of Alaska and Brian (Gwen) of Florida; his grandparents, Donald and Ruby Sutton of Portland, Col. Francis (Sis) Meredith of Columbia, S.C., and Ruth (John) Rudisill of Hendersonville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Carol (Steven) Boots; and his father-in-law, Douglas (Joan) Baker.

Services were May 9 at the Charlotte Assembly of God with Pastor Mark Woodbury, Pastor Jeff Frost and Pastor William Tate Sr. officiating. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to an educational fund for his children.

Clare Swan

Clare Swan, 83, of Eaton Rapids died March 26, 2000 in Charlotte.

Mr. Swan was born Aug. 31, 1916 in Brookfield Township, Eaton County, the son of Charles and Hazel (Sauerbrun). He retired from farming and had also been a machinist at MNR in Olivet. He had a love for flying and had been a pilot for many years.

He is survived by one daughter, Audrey (Paul) Kerekes of Charlotte; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Swan of Mt. Pleasant; eight stepchildren, Allan (Marcia) Clarke, Donald (Joyce) Clarke, Gary (Ruth) Clarke, and Marie (Carl) Florian, all of Eaton Rapids, and Dean (Linda) Clarke of Bellevue; Maurice Clarke and Gloria of Florida, and Maynard (Kathy) Clarke of Georgia; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, 28 step-grandchildren; 41 step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Leila (Carl) Heisler of Arizona; special friends, Wayne and Diane Clone of Eaton Rapids; and, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris (Clarke) Swan in 1973; his second wife, Velma (Harshey) Swan in 1992; and his son, Howard Swan in 1999.

Services were March 29 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Interment was in the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church.

Helen N. Swan

Helen N. Swan, age 90, died Thursday, May 11, 2000 at Duck Lake. Helen was born March 29, 1910 in Springport, the daughter of John and Nellie Jane (Sebring) Caldwell. Mrs. Swan graduated from Springport High School as Class President in 1927, taught at the Hayden Country School in Jackson County, then went back to Western Michigan University (then County Norman) for one year. She was a cashier for the telephone company before returning to teach at Bath Mills for 8 years, first grade at Springport, then 17 years as a second, kindergarten and reading teacher at Northwester and Union Street Schools in Eaton Rapids. Helen retired in 1974. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth E. Trimm; second husband, Russell E. Swan; brothers, Edgar, George, Frank, John and Donald Caldwell and her sister, Edith Peckham.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Jane (Neil) Henry of Duck Lake and their children, Lt. Colonel Scott Anson (Linda) Henry of Columbia, SC, Sarah Allison Henry of Cape Haze, FL, Duncan Caldwell Henry of Duck Lake; Step son, Tom (Pat) Swan of Duck Lake and their children T. Michael (Darlene) Swan, Tim Swan and Mike Swan all of Eaton Rapids; 2 great-grandchildren, Avery Parker and Austin Wentworth Henry.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 13, 2000 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Jeanne Randels of the Okemos Community Church officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Elementary Reading Program, Eaton Rapids Medical Center Meals of Wheels or Calhoun County Hospice in memory of Helen Swan.

Virginia Swayze

Virginia Swayze, 84, of Charlotte, formerly of Lansing, died Jan. 22, 2000 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.

Mrs. Swayze was born April 29, 1915 in Urbana, Ill., the daughter of John and Mary (Boyce) Phillips. She was a retired bookkeeper.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice (James) Nelson of Ionia and Jamie (Larry) McCormick of Lansing; one son, Keith Swayze of Flint; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James in 1993.

Services were Jan. 25 at the Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Pastor Don Woolum officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Community Library.

Jeffery Sweet

Jeffery Lynn Sweet, 56, of Potterville, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000 at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing.

Mr. Sweet was born May 10, 1943 in Lansing, the son of Charles and Katherine (Thompson) Sweet. He was a service manager for AIS-Lansing and had been a volunteer fireman and EMT for several years.

Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline; sons, Steve (Cynthia) Sweet of Tucson, Ariz., and Jerry (Donna) Sweet of Potterville; daughter, Carolyn Jean (John) Valentine of Holt; brothers, Doug of East Lansing, William of Eaton Rapids and Charles of Potterville; sister, Nan Palmer of Calif.; grandchildren, Matthew, Brittani, Mitchell, Meaghan and Alexander; mother-in-law, Carol Williams; brother-in-law, Roy Russell; sisters-in-law, Nancy Albright and Edna Nute; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Feb. 16 at Potterville United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Bailey and Rev. Tom Peters officiating. Cremation took place following the services.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Potterville Benton Township Fire Department or the Potterville Community Playground.

Thelma Sweet

Thelma (Carr) Sweet, 84, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000 at the Maple Knoll Manor, after an illness of several months.

Mrs. Sweet was born Feb. 1, 1916 in Howell, the daughter of Alva and Catherine (Fandell) Patrick, and moved to Charlotte as a young child and remained there all her life. She was married to Attorney Robert C. Carr in 1936; he preceded her in death in 1960. She was married to Edlin Sweet in 1964;he preceded her in death in 1990. She was a 1934 graduate of Charlotte High School, was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the National Council of Catholic Women, the St. Mary’s Altar Society, the Hayes Green Beach Hospital Golden Key Club, the Altruistic Club and the Charlotte Country Club.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Carr (Michael) Guglielmo of Fairfield, Conn.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Harriet Bouska of Lansing; and two nieces, Margaret Bouska and Jean Underhill, both of Lansing.

A scripture service was held Oct. 16 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte. Mass of the Christian Burial was held Oct. 17 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Maple Knoll Manor, 2152 S. Cochran, Charlotte, MI 48813.

Mary E. Taylor

Mary Esther Taylor, 63, of Charlotte, passed away Aug. 13, 2000.

Mrs. Taylor was born July 29, 1937 in Hillsdale, the daughter of Levi and Irene (Bacon) Flowers. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Charlotte.

Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Jerry Taylor; son, Logan (Heather) Taylor of Elkhart, Ind; daughter, Crystal (Tim) Frazier of Charlotte; nine grandchildren, April, Autumn, Amber, Ashley and Christopher of Charlotte, and, Tiva, Travis, Tiffany and Anthony of Tampa, Fla.; brother, George Flowers of Brooklyn; and special friend, “Precious”, her cat.

Funeral services were held Aug. 17 at the Free Methodist Church, Charlotte, with Rev. Paul Davis and Pastor Scott Collier officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Keith Thelen

Keith A. Thelen of Charlotte, 49, died Jan. 4, 2000, following a brief illness.

Mr. Thelen was born March 3, 1950 in Lansing, the son of Roman and Helen (Schmidt) Thelen. He retired in 1998 from the Michigan Department of Public Health after 27 years of service.

He is survived by fiancée, Cindy Crabtree; two sons, Todd and Chad; five brothers, Neil, Elden, Dennis, Gerald and Ronald; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Susan Thelen and Shirley Pardee.

Services were Jan. 8 at St. Mary Cathedral, Lansing with Fr. George Michalex officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Arrangements were made by the Tiffany Funeral Home, Lansing.

Leonora Mae Them

Leonora Mae Them, 89, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000.

Mrs. Them was born April 12, 1910 in St. Louis, the daughter of Ira and Maude Hemminger. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Charlotte.

She is survived by one daughter, Etta McClure of Linde; two sons, Harold “Doug” and Earling (Lorraine), both of Charlotte; one sister, Rose North of Lansing; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Them.

Services were held Jan. 15 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Jeff Shaeffer officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
