Audrey L. Shafer

Audrey L. Shafer, 79, of Charlotte, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005 at Eaton community Hospice House.

Mrs. Shafer was born March 26, 1925 in French Creek, W.Va., the daughter of Roy and Ruby Pearl (Murphy) Butcher. She was married in 1942 to Carl L. Shafer who preceded her in death in 1997. She loved golfing, enjoyed dancing and was an avid reader.

She is survived by children, Pamela K. (Bob) Buffenbarger of Charlotte, Sandra L. (Norm) Ballas of New Mexico, Gerald L. Shafer of Colorado; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren; sister, Maggie Whitt of Florida; and brother, Wilbur Cook of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Francis Cole; brothers, Kenneth and Robert Cook and Marion Butcher.

A Family Affirmation Service was held Feb. 10 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice House. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Marilyn H. Shaw

Marilyn H. Shaw, 53, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at Sparrow Health Systems in Lansing.

Marilyn was born Oct. 27, 1951 in Lansing, the daughter of Lynn and Mary (Huntington) Shaw and had been a Charlotte-area resident most of her life. She was a 1970 graduate of Charlotte High School, a 1974 graduate of Alma College, was currently serving as vice president of the Eaton Community Hospice Board of Directors, and attended First congregational Church in Charlotte.

Surviving are: her daughter, Mandi Dart of Okemos; two sisters, Harriett (Ronald) Converse and Connie Fast, both of Charlotte; two nephews; four nieces and several grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were held July 12 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Philip Hobson officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice.

Phillip Sherman

Phillip N. Sherman, 82, of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005 in Charlotte.

Mr. Sherman was born July 10, 1923 in Brookfield Township, the son of Harold and Florence (Wildren) Sherman. Phil was first employed in 1937 at Behrens & Rowe Drug Store in Charlotte at the age of 14 as a stock boy and soda jerk. A graduate of Charlotte High School in 1941, he attended the University of Grand rapids, the University of Michigan and graduated from Ferris Institute in s1949 with a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy. He then worked in Hastings for Taffee Pharmacy as a pharmacist and co-owner for 13 years and in 1962 moved to Eaton Rapids and married Mary Reitsma in 1963. Phil worked for Jack Shimmin at Shimmin Drug Store for 13 years and later worked for Leigh Furgason at Furgason Pharmacy for 13 years, retiring in 1988. Phil served in the U.s. Naval Reserve as a pharmacist mate during World War II. Phil was a dual member of the Hastings F.&A.M. Lodge 52 and Eaton Rapids Lodge 63. He was a life member of the Elks EPO Elks 1965 of Hastings and American Legion Post 15 of Eaton Rapids. He learned to play the violin at an early age and later the clarinet and saxophone. Phil played in several big bands during the Big Band Era in the ‘30s and ‘40s and because of his love of music he later played in small dance combos until around 1964.

Preceding him in death were: a step-daughter, Jonnie Sue Reitsma; son-in-law, Dr. John Kijak; and two brothers, John V. and Jerry J. Sherman, both of Charlotte.

Surviving are: his wife of 42 years, Mary; two children, Nancy Siddall of Lansing and William (Gloria) Sherman of Battle Creek; two step-children, Peggy (Jerry) McManus of Eaton Rapids and Carla Kijak of Gaitherburg, MD.; 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; sister, Jeane Scherrer of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Midge Sherman of Ft. Lauderdale; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held in the spring.

Velma A. Shilts

Velma A. (Parrott) Shilts, 83, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005.

Mrs. Shilts was born April 5, 1922 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Shirlie and Maude (Seamen) Parrott. She was a graduate of Battle Creek Central High School, had been employed by the Charlotte Shopping Guide, and as a hairdresser, and was currently a member of Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. She enjoyed growing and caring for her collection of violets.

Surviving are her husband of almost 60 years, Ronald E. Shilts; sister, Bernita Spillane of Battle Creek; sister-in-law, Laura Leeser of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Charles W. Parrott and Lloyd Raymond Parrott.

Funeral services were held Oct. 12 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Gary R. Sholty

Gary R. Sholty, age 66 of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, August 18, 2005 at his residence with his family by his bedside. He was born May 14, 1939 in Alma, MI, the son of Maxwell and Georgia (Romine) Sholty. Gary was a St4eam Fitter and was a member of the Lansing Plumbers & Pipefitters Local #333. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Maxwell “Skip” Sholty.

Gary is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cynthia; 3 children, Dale (Kathy) Sholty of Freemont, Mike (Heather) Sholty of Springport and Lori (Duane) Wilson of Springport; 6 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Beverly Granger, Gwen Thompson and Shirley Hendy; sister-in-law, Nancy Sholty; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held today, August 23, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring memorial contribution s may be made to the Heartland Hospice c/o HCR Manor Care Foundation, 333 N. Summit St., PO Box 10086, Toledo, OH 43699-0086, in memory of Gary Sholty.

Monica R. Siarny

Monica Rose Siarny, 22, of Charlotte, formerly of Oak Park, Ill. has passed away.

Monica was the loving daughter of William and Cynthia, nee Skarbek, Siarny; sister of Gerard B., David B. (Julie), Matthew A. (Michiko) Goto and Elizabeth M. Siarny; granddaughter of Herbert C. and Catherine B. Skarbek of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Ann E. and the late William D. Siarny Sr. of Chicago; loving nieces, cousin and friend of many.

Mass was held April 8 at Ascension Church in Oak Park, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Michigan Brain Research Center, 1914 Taubman Center, Box 0316, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0316.

Arrangements were by Columbian Chapels/Gamboney & Son Directors. Local arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Evalyn Simpson

Evalyn Simpson, 89, passed away March 9, 2005 in Charlotte.

She was born Feb. 4, 1916 in Glenside, Pa. She spent her life caring for others, volunteering her services and using her many talents. She loved poetry, music, art and teaching and was a good friend with a heart for God.

She is survived by four daughters, Charlotte (Francis) Williams, Evalyn Hamlin, Audrey Simpson, Roberta Clodfelter; nine grandchildren, Jodi (Michael) Lunghi, Cristi (Neal) Glazebrook, Kari (Michael) Reaume, David Hamlin, Gordon Hamlin, Cory Williams, Camilla (Daryl) Targosz, Melissa Hamlin, Jamie Hamlin; five great grandchildren, Kelleigh Rey, Morgan Reaume, Austin Blakney, Kennedy Targosz, Ella Lunghi; sister, Aliene (Sam) White; brother, Louis (Joyce) Wingfield; and special friend, Gen Conley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.

Services were held in Roseville, where she spent most of her life. Memorial contributions may be made to a children’s charity of choice.

Rachel L. Sinclair

Rachel L. (Speck, Summers) Sinclair, 64, of Lansing, died March 19, 2005.

Rachel was born Dec. 29, 1940 in Portland. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She had many children of her heart.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward (Doc) Summers.

Surviving are her daughter, Shannon E. Speck of Saginaw; sons, Scott (Holly) Speck and Staccy Speck, both of Dansville; grandchildren, Amber, Jessica, Alex and Ashley Speck; mother, Ruth Ann Summers; three brothers and four sisters.
