Jane Gewain

Jane Gewain was, above all, an amazing mom. Her and her late husband, Matthew Phillip Gewain II, devoted their lived to raising their three children, Matthew P. Gewain III of Tehachapi, CA, Dr. William J. Gewain of New Bern, NC, and Susan Jane Bohling of Lincoln, NE. Jane’s dedication to her family shaped her life each and every day. In return, her family adored her, never forgetting just how lucky and blessed they were. Jane, formerly of Lincoln, NE, died on Tuesday, April 6th, in New Bern, NC. She was 85 and was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, who passed away in May, 2002.

Jane E. Blake was born in Boone, IA on August 7th, 1924 while a tornado barreled through town. The youngest of five children born to Edna and James Black, Jane remained close to her family throughout her life. She was a “happy-go-lucky” child and her Dad’s favorite. If her older sisters or brothers ever wanted something badly, they would send Jane to ask their father, as they knew that he’d never say no to her. Many days, Jane could be seen riding her bicycle while wearing roller skates. She was a determined young lady from the start and lived life to the fullest. Living in the small town of Olivet, MI, the four “Blake sisters” were renowned for their sense of adventure and quest for a good laugh. They could always find the place to have fun, rarely missing the regular Saturday night dance held nearby Narrow Lake.

When she was just 13, Jane met Matt Gewain at school in New Jersey. Jane’s older sister, Edna Mae, was dating Matt’s best friend, John Hannon, and the four became inseparable. Jane was smitten, not just because Matt was the handsome center of the Scotch Plains High School football team, but also because he always made her laugh. They married in 1943, a few weeks after Matt enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was preparing for deployment overseas. She was 18, he was 22. While matt was in the service, Jane worked at Western Electric in New Jersey. But on the very day he returned, she told her boss, “My husband is home. I’m not missing out on another minute with him” and said good-bye. While she did go back to work for several years once her youngest child was a teenager, Jane’s real career was her family. The joy in her life came from being a full-time wife, mother grandmother, and recently, great-grandmother.

Over the years, Jane lived in many areas of the United States, including Iowa, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Florida and Nebraska. For vacations, Jane and Matt particularly enjoyed skiing in Upstate New York and making regular visits to the Jersey Shore. They loved nothing better than to rent a cottage at the Shore. Besides raising their children, they loved socializing with their extended families and friends. For nearly 30 years, this included weekly visits with the Blake sisters and their husbands. Jane was an accomplished seamstress who also enjoyed cross-stitch and quilting. For five years in the 1970s she applied her talents to her job as a seamstress at Pendleton Woolen Mills in Fremont, NE. After she was widowed, Jane moved with her son Bill and his family to North Carolina. She found contentment in the warm weather, beautiful sunny skies and blue water.

A quietly elegant lady who would never leave home in a wrinkled blouse, let alone without fresh lipstick, Jane was also a woman with a huge spirit and a sparkling sense of humor, ready to supply a funny light for most occasions. Jane set a standard kindness, thoughtfulness and grace that will live on as an example for those she left behind. From making two dozen caramel apples for Mattie’s Kindergarten class to teaching Billy’s Sunday School class to sewing multiple Halloween costumes for Janie and helping all with homework each and every evening, Jane’s love shone through. Jane was a tremendous proponent of education and taught her children and grandchildren a love of learning early in their lives. She kept the family home well stocked with books and would sit and read to her children and grandchildren for hours on end.

In addition to her children, Jane is survived by her sisters, Helen McGiveron and Edna Mae Hannon; her sister-in-law, Lois (Gewain) Johnson; her daughters-in-law, Gail Gewain and Sharon Gewain; her son-in-law, Jonathan Bohling; her four grandchildren, Kimberly (Gewain) Cakerice, Blake Wewel, Alexandra (Lexie) Jane Bohling and Grand Bohling; her grandson-in-law, Ryan Cakerice; and, of course, the precious four-month-old great granddaughter who carries on her name, Madelyn Jane Cakerice. A life lived with so much love never really ends but goes on in the hearts of those who loved her so dearly. We will forever remember and cherish the abundance of love with which she filled our lives.

Services were held Friday, April 16th at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 So. 14th St., Lincoln, NE 68512. Burial immediately followed at Lincoln Memorial. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be sent to First Congregational Church, 300 So. Main St., Eaton Rapids, MI 48827 where Jane loved to attend services with her sisters whenever she was back home in Michigan.
