Michael L. VanTyle

Michael L. VanTyle, 57, of Charlotte, died Sunday, August 22, 2010. He was born September 29, 1952 in Streator, Ill., the son of Donald and Arline (Foster) VanTyle. Michael was employed by Owens Illinois for 37 years as a machine operator and served in the US Marines.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Nola; daughter, Lena VanTyle of Nashville, Mich.; son, Stacy VanTyle of Charlotte; granddaughters, Cheyanne and Jasmine VanTyle; brothers, Patrick (Mary) VanTyle of Massachusetts and Mark (Michelle) VanTyle of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Reverend Charles Jensen officiating. Interment was in Gresham Cemetery in Charlotte.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Russell J. VanVorst

Russell J. VanVorst of Eaton Rapids, age 78, passed away in Charlotte, December 4, 2010. He was born in Colon, MI, on April 11, 1932, the son of Clyde and Marie (Hackett) VanVorst. Russell graduated from Colon High School in 1950. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the United States Army. He retired from the State of Michigan in 19585. Russell was a member of the VFW, American Legion, AmVets, all color tractor club and the two cylinder club. He loved making new inventions. One of those inventions was a chicken catcher. Russell also enjoyed farming, traveling, wintering in Harlingen, TX and restoring antique John Deere tractors.

Russell is survived by his daughters, Karry (Douglas) Trickey of Eaton Rapids, Kelly Haughton of Bakersfield, CA; 1st wife, Gertrude VanVorst of Onondaga; 3rd wife, Myra Jeanie Fancher of Eaton Rapids; granddaughter Jenelle Trickey of Eaton Rapids; brother, Clyde VanVorst of Colon; sisters, Marjorie (William) Geiger of Coldwater, Phyllis Brown of Genison; sister-in-law, Mary VanVorst of Colon. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2nd wife, Dorothy (Lipsett) VanVorst; brother, Leslie VanVorst; sister-in-law, Esther VanVorst and 2 nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at the 1st Lutheran Church, 550 E. Shepherd St. Charlotte, MI 48813, with Pastor Timothy Olsen officiating. Visitation will be at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main St. Eaton Rapids, Tuesday 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday, one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice, 2675 S. Cochran, Charlotte, MI 48813.

Shayna N. Vickery

Shayna N. Vickery, 32, of Delton, died Feb. 23, 2010 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo after a courageous battle against breast cancer. She was born Jan. 24, 1978, the daughter of Robert and Tirrel (Wood) Himebaugh in Battle Creek.

She graduated from Bellevue High School and from Davenport University with honors receiving an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. Shayna worked as a certified occupational therapist assistant at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. Shayna was a member of Thornapple Valley Church and she enjoyed reading and playing games with her kids and family.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Shayna married Dan Vickery on Aug. 8, 1998. He survives. Also surviving are daughters, Delainey Hanley and Selena Vickery at home; her mother, Tirrel (Robert Mix) Wood of Bellevue; stepmother, Diane Himebaugh of Mesa, Ariz.; brother, Lucas (Mary) Himebaugh of San Diego, Calif., and Ryan Himebaugh of Mesa, Ariz.; special friends, Heather McHale and the entire Ray family.

Services will take place 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at First Baptist Church with Jeff Arnett, Thornapple Valley Church, officiating. Interment, Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorial donations may go to Susan G. Koman Foundation or the family. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Lee Warren Vierk

Lee Warren Vierk, 88, of Charlotte, MI died Sunday, September 5, 2010 at Hospice House of Eaton County. Mr. Vierk was born March 19, 1922 in Greenville, MI the son of the late Fred and Augusta (Peterson) Vierk. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1940. Lee had been an Eaton County farmer most of his life and a lifetime member of Farm Bureau. He also served in the Michigan National Guard. Mr. Vierk served on the Olivet Board of Education for 8 years and was the founder of the Spaulding 4-H Club. He loved to travel with his wife, including winters in Texas, a caravan through Mexico to Cancun and a Caribbean Cruise to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Lee loved playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen; son, Larry (Diana) Vierk of Charlotte; daughters, Janet Bowers of Olivet and Brenda Vierk of Charlotte; 6 grandchildren, Mark, Chris and Tracie Vierk, Chanda Aves, Matt Bowers and Melissa Carpenter; 7 great grandchildren; brother, Martin Vierk of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Margaret Wood of Corpus Christie, TX; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Vierk and sister, Donna Swanson.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home Charlotte, MI with Boyd Bowers officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo Township, MI. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 9:00.

Elva E. Vincent

Elva E. Vincent of Springport, passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2010, at the age of 69.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Gene; two sons, Bryon Miller and Bruce Vincent; one grandson, Michael Harmon; two sisters, Betty Dingee and Marsha Sterns; two brothers, Ray (Pat) Miller and Lester Miller; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Visitation will take place at the J.C. Adams Funeral Home, Springport Chapel, on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Cremation will follow. For those who wish memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Patricia J. Wagner

Patricia Jean Wagner, 59, of Charlotte, passed away April 3, 2010. She was born June 10, 1950 in Niles, Mich., the daughter of Randall and Betty (Runyan) Couchman. On November 29, 1969 she married her lifelong partner, Rev. Lynn Wagner.

Patricia was the Executive Director for Michigan CASA for 13 years. She was on the Governor’s Task Force for Child Abuse Prevention, a member of the Child Abuse Prevention Council for the State of Michigan, and the State Adoption Board. Patricia was the former Board President of Habitat for Humanity of Barry County.

She is survived by her husband, Lynn; daughter, Betsy (Darren) Tyria of Kalamazoo; mother, Betty Couchman of Buchanan, Mich.; siblings, Steven (Shirley) Couchman; J. Robert (Maggie) Couchman, both of Niles, Mich.; Catherine Ackerman of Ann Arbor, Mich.; sister-in-law, Mary Couchman of Galveston, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas in 2009.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on April 10, 2010 at Lawrence Avenue Methodist Church in Charlotte. Visitation will be 12:30 until the start of the service. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Michigan CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates).

Stanley John “Lefty” Wajda

Stanley John “Lefty” Wajda, 75, passed away Thursday April 22, 2010.

He was a member of the United State Marine Corp and served in the Korean War. He was a volunteer fireman, a Catholic Cursista and a member of a Barber Shop singing group. Stan retired form GMAC and enjoyed reading in his free time.

He is survived by his six children, Regina Johnson, Steven Wajda, Valerie Langin, Samuel Wajda, Scott Wajda and Heidi Shafiyoon as well as his 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Hank Sauerman and Larry Sauerman and preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Wajda and brother, Mike Sauerman.

A funeral service was held on May 8 at St. Ann’s in Bellevue, MI. Memorial contributions can be to the American Heart Association.

Lyle D. Walworth

Lyle D. Walworth of Jackson passed away February 14, 2010 age 96 years.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Inez; one daughter, Judy (Thomas) Naylor of Ann Arbor; one granddaughter, Jennifer (Andrew) Ballema of Chicago, many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Victor Walworth and one sister, Catherine Finch. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country in WWII, retired for Yardman after 31 years of service, was a member of the Wally Byam Airstream Club, the Belles & Bows Square Dancing Club and the first United Methodist Church. Mr. & Mrs. Walworth spent the last 31 winters in Florida.

According to his wishes, Mr. Walworth has been cremated. A Memorial Service will be held at the Watson Funeral Chapel, Wednesday 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Ed Ross officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Shirley J. Watkins

Shirley J. Watkins of Eaton Rapids, MI, age 78, passed away on June 24, 2010. She was born on May 1, 1932 in Eaton Rapids to Edward & Mildred (Forward) Spencer. She worked as a social worker & retired as an analyst from the State of Michigan. Shirley loved children & spent her time as a foster parent in her early years & gave a temporary home to foreign exchange students for many years; even after retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amer E. Watkins, her granddaughter, Mandie Hovey, and her brother, Thomas Spencer.

She is survived by her six children, Lisa A. Hovey (Harold), of Eaton Rapids, Scott F. Watkins, of McKee, KY, Karin C. Bulger, of Mears, MI, Todd S. Watkins (Deb) of McKee, KY, Mitch A. Watkins (Melinda) of Portland, MI, and Amy M. Collins of Laingsburg, MI; in addition, she had 18 grandchildren, Joshua, Melanie, Ashley, Courtney, Tori and Justin Hovey, Kristopher & Kurtis Kares, Savannah Bulger, Katie, Sarah & Holly Watkins, Scott Lighthiser, Nathan & Ryan Watkins, David, Roman and Calvin Collins. Also surviving are her sister, Nancy Dean, niece & nephew, Julie Dean & James Dean, sister-in-law, Rachel Spencer, and nieces, Erin Simpson (Tom) & Lindsey Spencer, and 5 great nieces/nephews.

Memorial services were held on Monday, June 28, 2010. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to Eaton County Hospice, Charlotte, MI.
