Domine, Charles O.

Lansing, MI

Formerly of Howell, MI and Racine, WI

Died Saturday, December 18, 2004 at the age of 93. Born on June 1, 1911 in Detroit, MI to Charles and Mary (Warrington) Domine. Chuck was preceded in death by Ruth, his wife of 6 years, Charlotte his wife of 53 years, and a daughter, Barbara (Wendell) Frever, formerly of Perry, MI. Surviving are his wife of 6 years, Cecile Gwen; children, Louise (Lorrin) Schwartz of Oxford, MI, James (Linda) of Lansing, MI, Cynthia (John) Refieuna of Huntsville, AL; Charles (Jean) of Racine, WI, and David (Judy) of Kenosha, WI. 17 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren will miss their Grandpa. Chuck moved to Howell, MI in 1946 and managed the Bowl-E-Drome and later was Superintendent of Production for Howell Electric Motors. Moving to Wisconsin in 1960, he was Superintendent of Production for Ladish Company of Cudahy, WI. Chuck was a 50 year member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning the Silver Beaver Award in 1958 from the Boy Scout Council headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI. He served as Scoutmaster for troops in Detroit and Howell, MI and later in Racine, WI. He was also active in starting new Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs throughout Livingston County, MI and later Racine County, WI. Chuck was also active in his church, serving in many ways at Grace Lutheran Church, Howell and St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Racine, WI and more recently was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, East Lansing, MI. Chuck is missed by many as he was a loving and caring person, a friend to many, he is turn, had many friends. He is warmly remembered by many at Friendship Manor, Lansing, MI and his caretakers at Tendercare West. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw, Lansing, MI, with the Rev. Richard Moe, of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Oak Plains Cemetery, Shaftsburg, MI. Visitation will be on Monday, December 20, 2004 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with family present. Memorials may be made to the local council of the Boy Scouts of America or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, East Lansing, MI.

Gorwitz, Kurt, PhD.

East Lansing, MI

Age 74, passed away Feb. 6, 2003. “Today, I lost my best friend and my soulmate”-Kathy. He was born in Vienna, Austria on April 16, 1928 and has lived in the Lansing area since 1970. He was a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, the B’nai B’rith and MENSA. As an eleven year old boy, he was a victim of the Holocaust in Vienna, Austria. He earned a Doctorate Degree from Johns Hopkins University. Kurt was employed with the State of Michigan, Dept. of Public Health for over 12 years, retiring from the Dept. of Management and Budget in 1982. Surviving are: Wife, Catherine; Daughter, Sandra (William) Gottlin of Stamford, CT; Son, Mark D.(Arlene) Gorwitz of Santa Monica, CA; Granddaughter, Alexandra, the apple of grandpa’s eye; 2 Sisters, Kay Nussbaum of Philadelphia, PA, and Martha Heyman of Lakewood, NJ; nieces and nephews; special friends, Kenneth Malkowski; his Tuesday night Poker club; and his Thursday night Bridge club. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon Monday; Feb. 10, 2003 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek; 1924 Coolidge Rd; East Lansing with Dr. Morton Hoffman, Rabbi Emeritus officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Lansing Food Bank or to Congregation Shaarey Zedek Tzedakah Fund. “Kurt, we will always miss you and love you as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather".

Bowland, Lavina B.

Holt (Formerly Coleman, MI and Higgins Lake, MI)

Age 96, went to be with her Lord on Friday, November 9, 2001. She was born March 13, 1905 in Clare, MI. The daughter of George and Katherine (Russ) Ackerman. Lavina was a graduate of Central Michigan University and a teacher for many years in the Central Michigan area. She was active in several civic and club organizations and a member of both St. Paul's and St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Churches. She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Bowland, of Grand Ledge, son, Earl Bowland, of Charlotte, sister, Florence Sanborn, of Chelsea and several nieces and nephews. Lavina was preceded in death by her husband, D. Eugene "Gene" Bowland, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Funeral services were held at 11:30 A.M. Monday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Weller officiating. Interment followed at Warren Township Cemetery in Coleman, MI. The family received friends from 10:30 A.M. until service time at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Christian Home, 2050 S. Washington Rd., Holt, MI 48842. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Szarka, Genevieve May

Lansing, MI

Age 75, completed her earthly journey on April 8, 2003 in peace, at home, attended by her family. Genevieve was born on November 9, 1927, the daughter of Henry Frank and Eva (Whiteman) Taylor. She graduated from St. Johns High School in 1947 and married John in 1948. Her children were her life’s joy. She raised them with much love and devotion first in Ovid, MI, then on a farm in Laingsburg, MI. She then took a position at General Motors, from which she retired in 1987. Surviving are: husband, John; 4 sons, Michael and Daniel (Rosemary), both of Lansing, Martin of Holt, and Bruce (Marlene) of St. Johns; 3 daughters, Rosanne (Gene) Parker and Mary (Steven) Rich, both of Lansing and Eva (Thomas) Britton of Colorado Springs, CO; brother, Harold (Linda) Taylor of Lansing; 7 grandsons; 8 granddaughters, 3 great grandsons with 2 great grandchildren expected; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 11, 2003 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with Fr. Pius Poff as celebrant. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing.

Dorn, Albert J.

Lansing

Age 86, passed away on April 6, 2004. He was born on May 4, 1917 in Lansing, and has been a lifelong resident. Mr. Dorn was employed in Quality Control at General Motors, retiring after 25 years, and was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He was frequently known as the “Tax Man” and he enjoyed fishing in his spare time. Surviving are: his wife of 37 years, Fay; 2 sons, Robert of Webberville, and Richard (Janet) of Williamston; 2 step-daughters, Rose (David) Patrick of Texas and Karen (Larry) Lumbert of Holt; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; brother, John (Pat) Dorn of St. Joseph; sister, Ruth (John) Opitz of Orlando, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Amelia Dorn. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with Rev. Paul J. Lindloff, and Rev. Timothy H. Buelow of Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 Wednesday, and from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church in memory of Albert J. Dorn.

Richards, Sonia

Lansing, MI

Age 65, passed away Aug. 26, 2002. She was born in Albion, MI May 24, 1937 and has lived in Lansing since 1962. She was a 1955 graduate of Homer High School and was a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a Teacher Aide for the Lansing School District for 20 years, retiring in 1994. She was preceded in death by: brother, Dr. Harry Lucyshyn. Surviving are: Husband, Ted; 2 Sons, Steve (Kelly) Richards of Lapeer, Harry ( Karen) Richards of Walled Lake; Daughter, Catherine Spalding of Homer; 5 Grandchildren, Nathan, Jacqueline, Nicholas, Kacey and Dylan; Brother, Pete (Barbara) Lucyshyn of Wilmette, IL; 3 Nephews, Andy, Bill and Greg Lucyshyn. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002 in the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with Father Roman Star of St. Innocent Orthodox Catholic Church, Redford, MI officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Larry D. “Bubba” “Papa Bowles” Bowles

Holt, Michigan

Age 54, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2004. Born on March 13, 1950 in Lansing to Zella and L.D. Bowles. He lived in Holt for the majority of his life and was very involved with the Holt Wrestling Club and Holt High School Athletic Boosters. He enjoyed canoeing, fishing, being out on Lake Michigan and just being at the beach. Larry drove trucks for Dart Container for 22 years and most recently had driven for Comprehensive Logistic and also loved his work at M&M Concrete. Larry was a very devoted family man who loved life to its fullest. He received God into his life in January 2003. Larry is survived by: his wife, Leann; their daughters, Christy (Don) Green and Angie Bowles; his former wife, Jeanette Bowles; their sons, Jon Bowles and Bryan Bowles; sister, Rose Chiolino; 6 grandchildren. Larry was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at Riverview Community Church, 3585 Willoughby Road, Holt. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until service time at the church on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Riverview Community Church, Youth Programs.
