Ferris, Eleanor H.

Lansing, MI

Age 87, passed away on April 25, 2002. She was born on June 22, 1914 in Jackson, MI and had been a Lansing resident since 1942. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and had been employed at Auto Owners Insurance Co. for 23 years, retiring in 1979. Eleanor loved her family, gardening, and her dog, Rambeaux. She was preceded in death by: 2 sisters and a brother. Surviving are: daughter, Linda (Don) Clingersmith of Holt; sons, Tyrus (Faye) Emmons of League City, TX and Richard (Sue) Emmons of San Ramon, CA; 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and sister, Janice Mericle of Broomfield, CO. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, April 29, 2002 at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor David P.E. Maier and Pastor Robert B. Appold officiating. Inurnment was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Jackson, MI. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 4-7 p.m., on Sunday. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff at Sparrow Dimondale Center for their kind and compassionate care. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1601 W. Holmes Road, Lansing, MI 48910, in memory of Eleanor H. Ferris.

Fletcher, Mary Magdalene

Holt, MI

Loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend went to be with her lord on October 6, 2001. She was born in Salina, Kansas on September 18, 1914. Mary was preceded in death by her parents Patrick and Anna (Gribble) O'Brien and also her first husband LeRoy Hanson in 1982. She is survived by: her husband of 17 years, Gerald A. Fletcher of Holt; Son, Eugene L. (Nancy) Hanson of Lansing; Daughter, Marcia A. (Larry) Marckel of Kalkaska, MI; Step Daughters, Judy (Mike) Simon of Lansing and Shirley (Ed) McKay of California; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was a member of Senior Citizens of Holt; UAW #652; she graduated from Salina high school and was employed at General Motors for 23 years. Mary will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 9, 2001, at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel with the Elder Edward Premoe officiating. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday. In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Hospice of Mid-Michigan Inc.

Sendzik, Meta

Lansing, MI

On Sunday, July 13, 2003, Meta Sendzik passed away. She was born on March 25, 1905, in Russia, and has lived in Lansing since the age of 3. Mrs. Sendzik was a member of Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willi Sendzik in 1965; daughter, Alice Hiner in 1999; and stepbrother, Leo Biebrich. Surviving are: 3 daughters, Betty (Ken) Beach of Lansing, Carol (Fred) Barnard of Lansing, and Elsie Purtill of Bloomfield Hills; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; and 3 stepbrothers, Herbert Biebrich of Columbus, IN, Art Kretschman of Lansing and Allan Kretschman of Arizona. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with The Rev. Paul J. Lindloff and The Rev. Timothy H. Buelow officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Wednesday. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the special caregivers at the Martin Luther Holt Home, and to a special neighbor, Shirley Means. Memorial contributions may be made to her church, or to the Martin Luther Holt Home in memory of Meta Sendzik.

Recchy, Donald Joseph

Lansing, MI.

Age 73, passed at his home on Saturday, July 20, 2002. He was born August 30, 1928 in Hancock, MI. the son of Frank and Rita (Opie) Recchy. Mr. Recchy has been a resident of Lansing since 1950, coming here from Hancock. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Joan “Avis” Recchy; 2 daughters, Patricia (Bob) Loomis and Gayle Ann (Leo) Jackson; 2 sons, Robert (Marie) Recchy and Steven Recchy; 2 grandchildren, Nicole and Ryan and 1 sister, Mary Pohl. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant twin Terese Marie and 1 brother, Opie Recchy. Donald had been an employee of G.M. plant #2 for 30 years. He enjoyed their cottage up North, traveling, and wintering in the South and Southwest. Heartland Hospice was very caring and helpful. Dear friends and family, through prayers and thoughtful deeds, have been comforting to Don and his family during his many years of illness. His rest is well deserved! To fulfill Don’s wishes, cremation has taken place an no services will be held. His cremated remains will be placed in his family’s plot in Northern Michigan. Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in loving memory of Don, to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Foundation. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Brooks, Thomas Henry

Holt, MI

After a long and valiant battle with cancer, Dad went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 12, 2005, the day of his fifty-first wedding anniversary. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty years, Sally. Dad was a man proud to work with his hands, a retired maintenance supervisor, builder, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a born again Christian who loved his church and thrived on learning the word through study groups and the teachings of his Pastor, Ron Otto, who led him to the Lord. A kind hearted man with a sense of humor that was enjoyed by all. He is survived by his loving son, Daniel Thomas (Loraine) Brooks; his devoted daughter, Deborah Lynn Brooks; his grandson, Daniel Thomas Brooks, II; his granddaughter, Da’Ryl Smith and his guardian Angel Tatiana Diaz; his nephew and closest friend, Bob (Jerri) Baisel; his sisters, Elsie, Barbara, Mary; his brothers, Charles and Dennis Brooks; his sister-in-law, Darlene Leyrer; his nephew, Larry (Susie) Leyrer; and many nieces and nephews, that will all miss him very much. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2005 at the South Lansing Christian Church, 6300 Aurelius Road, Lansing, with Pastor Ron Otto officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Lansing Christian Church Building Fund.

Gleason, Idella M.

Sarasota, FL (formerly of Dimondale)

Age 88, passed away on March 17, 2003 in Sarasota, FL. She was born on September 22, 1914 in Cass Lake, MN, and had lived in the Lansing area most of her life, moving to Florida 2 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, Loren in February 2000; son, Jim Gleason; and daughter, Jeanette Gleason. Surviving are: 2 sons, Bob (Jackie) Gleason of Sarasota, FL, and David (Carol) Gleason of Traverse City; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Lansing Seventh Day Adventist Church, 5400 W. St. Joseph Hwy., with Pastor Charles Davisson officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice in memory of Idella Gleason.

Gregory, Doris E.

Lansing, MI

Age 88, was called home to her Lord on Monday, November 19, 2001. She was born on November 19, 1913 in Ann Arbor, the daughter of George and Lillie (Blaich) Wacker. Doris graduated from Lansing Central High School in 1931, the Nursing School at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois in 1935 and the University of Michigan School of Public Health Nursing. She began her nursing career with the Michigan Department of Health in a teaching capacity in rural and small town schools in northern Michigan. Doris returned to Lansing after a year and continued as a Registered Nurse at Sparrow Hospital and in private practice with Dr. T. I. Bauer. Doris spent her last sixteen years working for Dr.'s Saker and Flory in their Lansing Allergy office. She was a long time member of North Presbyterian Church of Lansing where she served many roles including Deacon and Elder. Upon retirement Doris also did extensive volunteer service with the American Red Cross. Doris was married to Stanley K. Gregory in 1939, he preceded her in death in 1976. She is survived by: three children, Ronald (Sue) Gregory, Bruce (Nancy) Gregory and Virginia (Brian) Bell, all in Michigan; four grandchildren, Amy (Brad) Bertsch, Scott (Kim) Gregory, Lynn Gates and Heather Gregory; three great grandchildren, Jordon Gregory, Logan Gregory and Courtney Bertsch; sister, Margaret Halava; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with the Rev. Ronald Bell officiating. Interment followed at Deepdale Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burcham Hill Retirement Center, Employee Holiday Appreciation Fund.

Philip R. Brooks

Holt, Michigan

Loving and caring father, husband and son, age 48, passed away on December 23, 2004. He was born on October 19, 1956 in Murray, Kentucky. Mr. Brooks was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy and was a senior control board operator at the Lansing Board of Water and Light. Surviving are: his wife of 14 years, Yolanda; 2 daughters, Heather Ann and Chelsie Marie; son, Aaron Robert; his parents, Doug and Jean Brooks of Holt; father, Phil (Glenda) Archer of Mayfield, Kentucky; 3 brothers, David of Holt, Bill of Lake City, and Philip Shea (Janna) Archer of Kentucky; 4 sisters, Terri (Dick) Gober of Holt, Missy (Royce) Roach of Kentucky, Phyllis (Joe) Hayden of Indiana and Kathy (Dale) Csea of Kentucky; grandmother, Lettie “Mamaw” Dunn of Holt; mother-in-law, Carol Casanova of Lansing; 2 brothers-in-law, Steven and Daniel (Becky) Casanova, all of Lansing. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed, as he was well liked and had many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Robert “Gandy” Dunn; and his brother, Mark Brooks. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at Olivet Baptist Church, 5455 W. Willoughby Road, Lansing, with the Rev. Edgar L. Owens officiating. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Philip R. Brooks Memorial Fund to benefit his children.
