Mildred Rankin, 89, matron at 3 schools

Mildred S. Rankin, 89, of Latonia, a matron at three Covington schools, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

Mrs. Rankin retired in 1975 after serving as a matron at First District School, John G. Carlisle School and Holmes High School.

She was a member of Latonia Christian Church and was a Kentucky Colonel. She also was a big University of Kentucky sports fan.

"Mom was always a giver, never a taker," said Mrs. Rankin's daughter, Anna Jean Sitton of Pisgah Forest, N.C.

"She always wanted to do things for others. She made things brighter for everybody. She was a joy to be around."

Mrs. Rankin especially enjoyed her work as a school matron, said her daughter.

"She enjoyed being with the children and the teachers," said Mrs. Sitton. "She could be a nurse or she could be a janitor. She liked doing whatever needed to be done at school."

Mrs. Sitton said her mother "enjoyed simple things."

"She was very content with what life gave her and she made the best of what she had in life," she said. "She loved people and she loved life. She was a gem."

Mrs. Rankin's husband, Urban G. Rankin, died in 1991. Her son, Robert G. Rankin, died in 1999. Her sister, Agnes Clark, also preceded her in death.

Surviving in addition to her daughter are seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home in Latonia.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Pythian Grove cemetery in Berry.

Memorials are suggested to Latonia Christian Church, 3900 Decoursey Ave., Latonia, Ky., 41015, or Baptist Convalescent Center, c/o Activities Department, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky., or the American Diabetes Association.

June E. Barnes, 66, of Newport, died at 3:47 p.m. Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of God, Newport.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Barnes; a daughter, Sharon Simon of Newport; sons, Robin Barnes of Villa Hills and Jamie Barnes of Dayton; her mother, Mayme Long of Butler; sisters, Bonnie Westall of Middletown, Ohio, Pattie Harris of Dayton, Betty Betuel of Hillsboro, Ohio, Barbara Rodarmel of Butler, Doris Peck of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif., and Helen Richter of Fort Thomas; brothers, John Estes of Stanford, David Long and Charlie Long, both of Cincinnati, Larry Long of Dayton and Bill Long of Jacksonville, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to First Church of God, 338 E. Ninth St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

James Luther Bays, 79, of Independence, died Wednesday at his home.

He was a retired roll grinder for Interlake Steel, a member of New Hope Tabernacle Church of God, Walton, Bradford Masonic Lodge and a World War II Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Sturdivant Bays; a daughter, Eva Beck of Crittenden; a son, James Bays Jr. of Fort Wright; a brother, Delbert Bays of Independence; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to New Hope Tabernacle Church of God, 1404 Walton-Nicholson Road, Walton, Ky. 41094.

Madonna Wood Bowling, 70, of Hamilton, Ohio, formerly of Harrison County, died Wednesday at Hospice of Hamilton. She was a former Avon employee and a member of Eastern Star Lodge No. 589 and Disabled American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband, Charles E. Bowling, preceded her in death.

Survivors include brothers, Jessie W. Wood of Harrison County and Shirley W. Wood of West Chester, Ohio; and a sister, Joy Wood Joyof Cynthiana.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Burns Institute, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

Albert C. Braun, 73, of Southgate, died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a retired car man with C&O Railroad, a member of Lawler Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662, Newport, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Boschert Braun; daughters, Debbie Meyer of Newport, Janet DeVoto of Fort Thomas and Janice Braun of Southgate; a sister, Marlene Schwartz of Federalburg, Md.; and a brother, Max Braun of Chapin, S.C.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Newport Central Catholic High School Athletic Department, 13 Carrothers Road, Newport, Ky. 41071.

Charles L. Dehnert, 74, of Belleview, Fla., formerly of Bellevue, died Monday at Monroe Regional Medical Center, Belleview, Fla. He was a retired salesman with Sears in Ocala, Fla., and an Army veteran. His wife, Verna Dehnert, died in 2000. Daughters, Christine Dehnert and Marie Reekers, died in 1973 and 1982, respectively.

Survivors include sons, Charles M. Dehnert and Michael A. Dehnert, both of Woodway, Texas; daughters, Christina M. Dehnert of Bellevue and Heidi Ellis of Belleview, Fla.; a stepson, Elmer Leo Slenker of Dothan, Ala.; a stepdaughter, Delores West of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; sisters, Marilyn Dehnert-Tabb and Helen L. Rogers, both of Dayton; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.

Norma Jean "Puddy" Groves, 72, of Foster, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Augusta Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her husband, Russell Eugene Groves; a daughter, Joan Lynn Thompson of Peach Grove; sons, Russell Keith Groves of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Ben E. Groves of Foster; sisters, Viola Carpenter and Wilma Leggee, both of Maysville, and Virginia Bauer of Fernleaf; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Augusta Church of the Nazarene. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Fri day. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery, Mays Lick. Memorials are suggested to Augusta Church of the Nazarene, Augusta, Ky. 41002; or Hospice of Hope, 1 W. McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky. 41056. Donald Ray Herrington, 61, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was an employee of RGC Enterprises, Dry Ridge, and an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include sons, Travis Herrington of Dry Ridge and Rory Conner of Petersburg; daughters, Ja Deanna Lee of Owenton and Terri Conner of Florence; brothers, David Herrington of Hebron and Gerald Herrington of Texas; sisters, Bonnie Hibbard of Erlanger and Brenda Her rington of Ohio; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the family at P. O. Box 146, Dry Ridge, Ky. 41035.

Tess R. Koon, 94, of Newport, died at 10:05 p.m. Tuesday at Carmel Man or Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. She was a retired employee of the Social Security Administration and a board member of Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission. Her husband, Calvin Koon Sr., died in 1966.

Survivors include sons, Calvin Koon Jr. and Hugh Koon, both of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Carmel Manor, 100 Carmel Manor Drive, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075; or New Hope Methodist Church, 22 William Blatt Ave., South gate, Ky. 41071.

James W. Marshall, 60, of Covington, died Tuesday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. He was a retired maintenance department worker with the Drawbridge Inn, Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include a brother, Michael Marshall of Dry Ridge; and sisters, Virginia "Jeanie" Felts of Lake side Park and Geneva Gullion of Crescent Springs.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Sylus Troy Pierson, 8 days, of Walton, died Tuesday at Children's Hos pital, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton.

Joseph A. Scheben Jr., 81, of Cold Spring, died Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. He was an electrician with the C&O; Rail road, a member of St. Luke's Luther an Church in Cold Spring and a troop leader with the Boy Scouts. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Mary Scheben, died in 1999.

Survivors include a son, Denny Scheben of Covington; and a brother, Lambert Scheben of Grants Lick.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will begin there at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

David Leroy Smith, 66, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a truck driver with Grant County Con crete and a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Williamstown. A daughter, Tena Marie Smith, died in 1987.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Eckler Smith; sons, David Ray Smith of Dry Ridge and Jeremiah Ray Smith of Williamstown; daughters, Diana Carol Goff of White Mills, Cheryl Lynn Clark of Taylor Mill and Billie Jo Alley of Elsmere; brothers, James Smith of Williamstown and John Smith of Crittenden; a step brother, Gary Lovelace of Williams town; a sister, Sylvia Draper of Williamstown; and half-sisters, Janet Marksberry and Pat Sullivan, both of Williamstown; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Visitation will begin there at 7 p.m. Friday.

William P. Spreher, 70, of Highland Heights, died Wednesday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights.

Arrangements are pending at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Howard Charles Stephenson, 79, of Union, died Tuesday at his home.

He was the owner/operator of Stephenson Brothers Milk Transit Co. and a member of Beaver Lick Christian Church, Union.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Stephenson; a daughter, Laura Schwenke of Union; brothers, James Stephenson of Verona, William Stephenson of Florence and Buck Stephenson and Russell Stephenson, both of Union; sisters, Jessie Coppage of Walton, Helen Murdock of Chicago, Ill., Freida Stephenson of Crestview Hills, Norma Jean Moore and Faye Sparks, both of Florence, and Virginia Mae Huff and Mabel Martin, both of Union; and a grandson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Beaver Lick Christian Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to Beaver Lick Christian Cemetery, 14676 U.S. 42, Ve rona, Ky. 41092.
