Robert Lange, 78, avid golfer and woodworker

Robert F. Lange had been playing golf since before high school, but it wasn't until last week that he shot his best score, a 44.

"He was just on top of the world, " said Mike Lange of Fort Wright, Mr. Lange's youngest son.

Mr. Lange, of Park Hills, was so excited that he was still talking about the score on Monday. He had a heart attack the next day and died at 3:55 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Hospital South in Edgewood. He was 78.

The house that Mr. Lange grew up in adjoined the Fort Mitchell Country Club, and he would sneak onto the golf course and practice there, his son said.

Mr. Lange also spent years sharpening his carpentry skills. He made tables and a bed. "Virtually every room in my parents' house has a piece of furniture that was made by my Dad, " Mike Lange said.

But Mr. Lange's strongest passion was being with his family, especially his 15 grandchildren.

"When one of them would walk in the house, he'd light up, " Mike Lange said. "He'd smile from ear to ear and his eyes would just sparkle."

Mr. Lange was a retired mail handler with the U.S. Postal Service and an Army veteran of World War II.

Other survivors include his wife, Mary Minnette Whaley Lange; a daughter, Mary M. Lange of Park Hills; sons, Robert F. Lange Jr. of Batavia, Ohio, Daniel C. Lange, Kenneth J. Lange and Richard C. Lange, all of Fort Wright, and Thomas A. Lange of Covington; a brother, Fred J. Lange of Fort Mitchell; sisters, Margaret Moss of Edgewood and Gerry Willman of Taylor Mill; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Fern Storer, 96, former Post food editor

Award winning editor, intellectual, gracious hostess, devoted wife and friend, proud native Kansan and transplanted Kentuckian, perfectionist. Fern Storer was all that and more, according to friends and former co-workers.

As food editor for the Cincinnati Post from 1951 to 1976, Ms. Storer used those traits to give people more than just information. She tried to teach people how to do things right.

"She was meticulous about testing recipes, " said current Cincinnati Post home/food editor Joyce Rosencrans. "She took great pride in the accuracy of those food sections and passed those principles down to me."

Ms. Storer died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center and Lodge in Covington. She was 96.

"Her body just began to slow down, " said longtime friend and minister Bing Summerell, of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Lakeside Park. "Her eyesight and hearing were failing, and that's what bothered her the most."

Fern Harris Storer was born in Osborne County, Kan., grew up on a farm and earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Kansas State University in 1928.

She married Sheldon Storer in 1931 and they lived in St. Louis for six years, then moved to Covington, where she began a six-year stint as director of dietary services at William Booth Memorial Hospital.

Later, she served as home economics consultant for Family Services of Cincinnati, where she began writing a food column for the Cincinnati Post.

During her 25 years as food editor, Ms. Storer expanded the food section from a single column to several pages. After retiring from the Post in 1976, she continued to write a weekly column called Microminders.

"Fern is a pioneer in microwave cooking - one of the nation's first food professionals to tackle the trial-and-error of early microwaving, " then-Post editor Paul F. Knue wrote when Ms. Storer retired again in 1985.

In 1989, her cookbook, "Recipes Remembered, " was published.

She didn't talk much about the awards she had won, but friends knew the one she was most proud of was Kansas State's Centennial Award for Distinguished Service, presented to her in 1963.

Ms. Storer is especially remembered by her friends for the beautiful home and yard she and her husband maintained in Covington. "She loved flowers, " said Summerell. "She had a beautiful garden around her home."

James C. Votruba, president of Northern Kentucky University, called Ms. Storer "an incredible person. She was a friend of the university and a friend of mine. She said she lived so long because she wanted to see how life would turn out, " Votruba said.

Sheldon Storer died in 1988.
