Roland 'Pete' Brendel, 77, coach, maintenance worker

Roland "Pete" Henry Brendel, 77, of Elsmere, a former Dixie Area Knothole baseball coach, died Monday at his home.

He was a retired maintenance worker with the Elsmere-Elranger Board of Education.

An Army veteran of World War II who served in Germany, France and Belgium, Mr. Brendel was an adjutant for 26 years with the Simon Kenton Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He also was a member of Amer ican Legion Post No. 20 in Elsmere and the Sixth District American Legion.

Mr. Brendel was a member of St. Henry Church in Elsmere and belonged to the church's Prime Time Seniors group.

"He really enjoyed coaching the kids in Knothole baseball, " said Mr. Brendel's daughter, Charlene "Missy" Stelzer, of Erlanger. "He was very interested in helping that group.

"He was especially proud to be long to the VFW and American Legion. He also enjoyed gardening and working in the yard."

A daughter, Kimberly Brendel, preceded Mr. Brendel in death.

Other survivors include his wife, Helen Crowell Brendel; sons, Tommy Brendel of Belleville, Ill., Barry Brendel and Todd Brendel, both of Elsmere; a sister, Marion Barnes of Florence; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Henry Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Linne mann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Alwina Genevieve Bowman, 91, of Walton, died noon Tuesday at her home. She was a retired saleswoman for Shillito's department store in downtown Cincinnati and a member of St. Mary United Church of Christ, Latonia. She was a member of the church Ladies Guild. Her husband, Dr. Dolph L. Bowman, died in 1992. A son, Louis Bowman, died in 1985.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Thornton of Walton; a grandson and one great-grandson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Mark United Church of Christ, 38th and Park, Covington, Ky. 41015.

Ruth Kathryn Casson, 77, of Alexandria, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a kitchen worker with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fort Thomas, and a member of Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205 Women's Auxiliary and St. Paul United Church of Christ, Alexandria.

Survivors include a son, William A. Casson Jr. of Alexandria; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Church of Christ, 1 N. Jefferson St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001.

Roy Marshall Day, 74, of Carrollton, died Monday at Green Valley Health Care Center, Carrollton. He was a retired postal clerk with the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati International Airport. His wife, Betty Day, died in 1995.

Survivors include sons, Mike Day of Louisville, David Day of Cincinnati and Rick Day of Carrollton; sisters, Mary Bayer of Milton and Patricia Day of Louisville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Margaret Cecelia Downey, 90, of Alexandria, died at 6:40 a.m Tuesday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights.

She was a retired bookkeeper with Newport National Bank.

Survivors include a sister, Josephine Grannan of Fairborne, Ohio.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Thelma A. Frohlich, 96, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Florence, died Saturday in Cape Coral. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Henry Frohlich, died in 1970.

Survivors include a son, Ken Frohlich of Florence; a daughter, Rita Rose Meyer of Cape Coral, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Timothy Church, Union. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Meals on Wheels, 1032 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Harry Joseph Lange, 85, of Southgate, died Sunday at his home. He formerly worked in the time study department for Cincinnati Milacron, was a member of St. Therese Church in Southgate and was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Beula P. Heiser Lange, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, William H. Lange of San Diego; a daughter, Suzanne Haas of Novato, Calif.; a brother, Robert Lange of Dallas; a sister, Sister Mary Janita, S.N.D., of Park Hills; and a granddaughter.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, followed by prayers. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Shelia Martin, 36, of Sanders, died Monday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a homemaker. A son, Jeremy Raines, died in 2000.

Survivors include a son, Jason Raines of Owenton; her father, Melvin Martin of Sanders; sisters, Deloris Howell of French Lick, Ind., Margie Martin and Debbie Crawford, both of Sanders; and a fiance, David Taylor.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ghent Masonic Cemetery.

Arthur J. Moorman, 89, of Fort Mitchell, died at 10:40 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was vice president of A. B. Closson Jr. Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, and the church's Holy Name Society. He was a past president of the Fort Mitchell Board of Adjustment and of the Retail Merchants Association of Cincinnati, and a member of Fort Mitchell Firemen's Booster Association.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hentz Moorman; a son, Tom Moorman of Cincinnati; and a daughter, Christine Kreyling of Nashville, Tenn.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Thoroughbred Retirement Fund, P. O. Box 4306 Midway, Ky. 40347. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Clarence "Red" Roberts, 66, of Covington, died Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a truck driver with CSX, a member of Kersten O'Day VFW Post No. 2899 in Dayton and the Dayton Eagles, and was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Diana Roberts; daughters, Amy Roberts of Independence, Cathie Roberts of Elsmere and Tanya Roberts of Covington; a son, Gary Roberts of Florence; sisters, Anna Carr of Brooksville, Catherine King of Dayton, Rose West of Clearwater, Fla., and Martha Usher of Georgia; brothers, Billy Roberts of Brooksville, Bobby Roberts of San Antonio and Sammy Roberts of Dayton.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to University Hospital, 234 Goodman St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Stephen Schwartz, 43, of Dayton, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a chef and volunteer with Healing Place Church of God, Dayton.

Survivors include his wife, Kelly Flutmus Schwartz; a son, Trevor Dillon Schwartz, at home; stepsons, Jason Bauer and Bryon Bauer, both at home; a brother, Greg Schwartz of Fort Thomas; and sisters, Cathy Riley of Bellevue and Rhonda Ross of Fort Wright.

Services will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Healing Place Church of God. Memorials are suggested to Cincinnati Zoo, 3400 Vine St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45220; Newport Aquarium, 1 Aquarium Way, Newport, Ky. 41071; or Cincinnati Museum of Natural History, 1301 Western Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203. Helen E. Watson Spegal, 83, of Independence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Leonard E. Spegal; daughters, Sue Fisk of Walton and Pat Cox of Independence; sisters, Elsie Watson of Florence and Thelma Baker of Independence; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Rev. George A. Stack, 76, of Owenton, died Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. He was a retired minister and director of missions of Owenton First Baptist Church, and a member of the Owen County and Ten Mile Baptist associations and Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Ann Roland Stack; sons, Sam Stack of Folkston, Ga., and Greg Stack of Everett, Wash.; a sister, Margaret Stack of Aiken, S.C., and Geneva Hall of North Augusta, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at noon 2 p.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owenton Cemetery.

Hilda Stringer, 93, of Villa Hills, died at 1:50 p.m. March 25 at Madonna Manor, Villa Hills. She was a retired apartment building manager. Her husband, William Stringer, died in 1937.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Madonna Manor. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Stringer bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to Madonna Manor, 2344 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky. 41017. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Donald Dale Weber Sr., 67, of Dayton, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was a retired engineering manager with Cincinnati Bell and a member of Knights of Columbus Bishop Mulloy Council No. 1301 and Telephone Pioneers.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Cummins Weber; daughters, Kim Petrick of Fort Thomas, Michelle Weber and Sandra Weber, both of Dayton; sons, Donald D. Weber Jr. of Fort Thomas and Gregory A. Weber of Highland Heights; a brother, Richard Weber of Covington; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Ava J. Deatherage Winkler, 94, of Grants Lick, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Estill Winkler of Grants Lick; a brother, John Gosney of Bellevue; and sisters, Izetta Brownfield of Butler and Helen Baker and Doris Jean Montgomery, both of Grants Lick.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.

Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Constance M. Works, 69, of Frenchburg, formerly of Falmouth, died Monday at her home. She was a member of Mount Moriah Christian Church and American Legion Post No. 109 Auxiliary. Her husband, Edwin Works, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Stephen Works of Frenchburg; brothers, Franklin Bennett Jr. and William P. Bennett, both of Columbia, S.C.; sisters, Barbara Paris of Riverdale, Ga., and Sylvia Cox of South Carolina; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation began there at noon. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
