Walter Thomas Ramey, 87, owner of popular restaurants

You may not remember Walter Thomas Ramey, but you may have eaten at his restauran t.

Ramey co-owned the former Savory Cafeteria in Cincinnati and later owned Ramey's Cafeteria, on Seventh Street in downtown Covington.

Lunch at Ramey's was a daily event for local businessmen, said Ramey's daughter, Scheila Leslie. And on Sundays, she said, the after-church crowd lined up out the door and onto the street to get into one of the three dining rooms.

Her father got interested in the restaurant business when he served as a mess sergeant, stationed in the Philippines during World War II, Ms. Leslie said.

The fare at Ramey's reflected his own tastes, which she said were for meat-and-potatoes and country-style cooking.

Mr. Ramey was a member of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky restaurant associations.

He retired in the late 1970s, his daughter said, and his restaurants are no more. Ramey's Cafeteria is now a city parking garage.
