Richard Remke, president of meatpacking firm

Richard L. Remke, retired presi dent of Jacob Schlachter's Meat Packing in Cincinnati, died Friday at his home in Florence after a long ill ness. He was 77.

Mr. Schlachter was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

His grandfather had founded Remke Markets and his father, William Remke, went into the meat packing business, purchasing the Schlachter company in the 1940s.

Richard Remke had grown up working in his grandfather's grocery and later went into the meatpacking business with his father and brother.

Mr. Remke retired in the mid 1980s. He enjoyed deep sea fishing and lake fishing, and had a keen appreciation for the outdoors.

"We would go for walks in the woods, following creek beds and identifying wild plants, " said his wife, Dessie Remke.

"He was exuberant. He was just happy. He was very kind and sensitive to other people. There was not a selfish bone in his body. He helped everybody."

He developed heart and lung problems about nine years ago and his condition became critical about five years ago.

"Through all his illness, he never failed to smile. He was the one who was always cheering everybody up, " Mrs. Remke said.

When his illness curtailed travel, he and Mrs. Remke enjoyed the back yard gardens that they had created with waterfalls and fish ponds and a English flower garden.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Dick Remke of Cincinnati; daughters, Mary Ann Miller of Cincinnati and Carolyn Remke of Cold Spring; a stepson, Kirt McBee of Florence; a brother, Walt Remke of Crestview Hills; two grandchildren and one step-granddaughter.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Associ ation, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Chester C. Ballard, 79, of Newport, died at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a retired letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Newport.

He also was a member of the Senior Center of Highland Heights, Rankin-Prout VFW Post and the Newport Elks. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Hacker Ballard; a daughter, Carole Ward of Southgate; a son, Charles Ballard of Valdosta, Ga.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Marjorie E. Belair, 85, of Florence, died Thursday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

She was a registered nurse with Port Huron (Michigan) Hospital. Her husband, Gerald Belair, died in 1994.

Survivors include daughters, Carol Lyons of Novi, Mich., Darlene Ogg of Milford, Mich., Dorothy Smith of Marysville, Mich., Mary Belair of Fayetteville, N.C., and Margaret Minnis of Florence; sons, David Belair of Port Huron, Gerald Belair II of Tampa, Fla., and Paul Belair of Tyron, N.C.; a sister, Joan Duffey of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada; a brother, David Johnson of Toronto; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 2 p.m. Sunday. Memorials are suggested to Woodspoint Nursing Home, 7300 Woodspoint Drive, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Helen Rose Coldiron Claus, 68, of Latonia, died Tuesday at her home.

She was a retired production worker with Chester Labs.

Survivors include a son, Russell Claus of Corpus Christi, Texas; a daughter, Deborah Durstock of Covington; brothers, Gerald Coldiron of Hebron and Ronald Coldiron of Park Hills; sisters, Charlotte Coldiron and Pamela Coldiron, both of Latonia, Beverly Baugh of Covington, Karen Murphy of Park Hills and Sandra Shafer of Florence; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Monday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

John A. Fey, 73, of Dayton, died Friday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights.

He was a supply clerk with Cincinnati Drum Co., a member of Kersten O'Day VFW Post No. 2899 in Dayton and the Dayton Eagles, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Hauger Fey; daughters, Mary Lynn Carter of Dayton and Joyce Payne of Southgate; a son, John Fey Jr. of Newport; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Mackenzie Kaitlin Finan, daughter of Rebecca S. Finan of Covington, was stillborn at 10:26 a.m. Tuesday at St Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Other survivors include her grandparents, Dave and Pamela Finan of Covington.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mother of God cemetery Chapel, Fort Wright. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery. Catchen Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Marguerite Furlong, 86, of Fort Thomas, died at 12:25 a.m. Friday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights.

She was a retired laundry worker with St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Francis A. Furlong, died in 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Vaught of Fort Thomas; a son, Larry E. Furlong of Mount Sterling, Ohio; a sister, Jonnie Allender of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Becky Neal Hegge, 76, of Ludlow, died at 3:13 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a retired beauty salon owner in Erlanger. A son, Chris Hegge, died in 2000.

Survivors include sons, Rick Hegge of Taylor Mill and Tim Hegge of Bromley; a brother, Earl K. Neal of Burlington; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Ms. Hegge bequeathed her body to the University of Kentucky White Hall for the Advancement of Medical Studies.

Memorials are suggested to University of Kentucky Body Bequeathal Program, MN233 Medical Center, Lexington, Ky. 40536 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Eula Mae Jordan, 65, of Williamstown, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Rosemary Beach and Sandra Kay Jones, both of Elsmere, Lisa D. Bussell, Theresa Cook and Christine Schooler, all of Williamstown, and Lillian Sears of Falmouth; sisters, Bea Miller of Barbourville and Pearl Wilhoite of Algonquin, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and her fiance, Cecil Ray Moore of Williamstown.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Mae Foxworthy Mearns, 71, of Maysville, died Friday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mount Olivet.

She was an administrative assistant with Maysville Extended Care Facility. Her husband, William B. Mearns, died in 1973.

Survivors include a son, Bill Mearns of of New York; a sister, Nelsie McHugh of Maysville; and brothers, Mason Foxworthy of Falmouth and Elmer Foxworthy of Mount Carmel.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Roger H. Moellering, 58, of Lakeside Park, died Wednesday at University Hospital of injuries suffered in a fall.

He was president of JLM Properties, Covington, and a past president of Summit Hills Country Club in Crestview Hills and the Diocesan Catholic Children's Home, Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, Jeane L. Zinck Moellering; a daughter, Mindeanne E. Moellering of Ludlow; sons, David R. Moellering of St. Louis, Doug las R. Moellering of Birmingham, Ala., and G. R. "Chip" Moellering of Villa Hills; a sister, Mary Kay Gibson of Florence; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon today at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Roger Moellering Memorial Fund, in care of Diocesan Catholic Children's Home, P. O. Box 17007, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.

Frances Smith Orsborne, 85, of Owenton, died at 2:24 p.m. Friday at Owenton Manor Nursing Home, Owenton.

She was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist Church, Grant County. Her husband, Stanley Orsborne, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Hershel Osborne of Mount Vernon, Ind.; daughters, Bernice Bell of Williamstown and Barbara Lou Mason of Milford, Ohio; a brother, Ollie House of Hartwell, Ohio; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.

Walter L. Stevenson, 89, of Crestview Hills, died Thursday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

He was a clothing buyer with Shillito's department store and an employee of the state of Ohio.

He was a member of Summit Hills Country Club, the Downtown Cincinnati YMCA, and Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include a brother, Robert Stevenson of Portland, Ore.; and a sister, Carolyn Wilson of Miami.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Louis Weiner, 76, of Covington, died at 8:30 a.m. Friday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

He was a retired elevator operator with the former Eilerman's Men's Clothing Store, Covington.

Survivors include brothers, Dick Weiner and Marvin L. Weiner, both of Wilder.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
