Virginia Morlidge, 95, first child born in Fort Mitchell

One of Fort Mitchell's first citizens is dead.

Virginia Morlidge, 95, the first child born in the city, died at 7 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

In 1904, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Van Winkle, and her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. John Menzies, built the town's first two houses, on West Orchard Street, said her son, John B. Morlidge III.

A new streetcar line from Cincinnati opened up the farmland that is now Fort Mitchell for development, he said.

Born in 1906, Ms. Morlidge graduated from Beechwood School, which then had only two rooms and an outhouse. She later graduated from Sweet Briar Col lege, and served on its alumni board.

The homemaker and mother of two lived in Fort Thomas for most of her life, except during the Great Depression, when the family moved to Frankfort.

"I always thought she did a great job as a mother. She was very kind and considerate, and helped us all she could, " her son said.

A lifelong member of the for mer Madison Avenue Baptist Church, now the Lakeside Presbyterian Church, she was one of the first two women elected to its board of deacons and later served as an elder and trustee. She also served on the Northern Kentucky Interfaith Commission.

She volunteered for 25 years at the former Booth Hospital in Cov ington and helped found the for mer Covington Protestant Children's Home, now the Chil dren's Home of Northern Ken tucky.

She served as president of the Fort Mitchell Garden Club in 1979-80. She was also a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America and the Fort Mitchell Country Club.

She loved the town and felt blessed to live there, her son said.

Her husband, John B. Morlidge Jr., died in 1982.

Survivors in addition to her son include a daughter, Nell Lewis Morlidge of Covington; a son, John B. Morlidge III of Fort Mitchell; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Fri day at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Highland Ceme tery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 2690 Dixie Highway, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017; Children's Home of Northern Kentucky, 200 Home Road, Covington, Ky. 41011; or St. Charles Care Center, 500 Farrell Drive, Covington, Ky. 41011. Mid dendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Clarence Edwin Barnes, 79, of Cincinnati, died Saturday at his home. He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, a former legal officer with the Judge Advocate General and was a member of the first teaching faculty at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. There, he taught constitutional law, legal history and military law, and later served as chairman of legal studies at the academy.

After his retirement from the military, he worked for the Internal Revenue Service, ultimately becoming chief counsel of the legal division of the IRS's five-state, midwest region headquartered in Cincinnati. He retired in 1993.

Mr. Barnes was a consulting professor of tax law at the University of Kentucky College of Law, University of Louisville Law School, University of Cincinnati College of Law, Capitol University School of Law and Case Western School of Law. In 1997, he joined the law firm of Cohen, Todd, Kite & Stanford.

He was a member of the American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association and Northminster Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Scrivner Barnes; a daughter, Mary Brose of Cincinnati; sons, Edwin "Woody" Barnes of Fort Thomas and Clay Barnes of Chicago; and four grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday at Northminster Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Mills Springs Cemetery, Somerset.

Memorials are suggested to Leukemia Society of America, 100 Merchant St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45246; or American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Mildred Eileen Berliner, 85, of Chatham, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired sales representative at Shillito's department store and a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Camp Springs and Order of the Eastern Star, Silver Grove.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Painter of Alexandria; a son, Vernon Rath of Loveland, Ohio; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Frank Bischoff, 93, of Florence, died at 12:37 p.m. Tuesday at Village Care Center, Erlanger.

He was a retired self-employed truck driver. His wife, Erma Bischoff, died in 1972.

Survivors include a sister, Marie Traylor of Independence; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, 4410 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076.

William J. Brown, 84, of Petersburg, died Monday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. He was a retired custodian at the Northern Kentucky Vocational School, a member of Petersburg Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Martha Brown, died in 1995.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Rae Carol Cooper of Rockville, Md.; and two step-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Petersburg Baptist Church, 6537 Market St., Petersburg, Ky. 41080.

Patricia Annette Caudill, 67, of Florence, died Monday at her home. She was an investigator with Pinkerton Security and Investigations. Her husband, Lawrence C. Caudill, died in 1991.

Survivors include daughters, Cheryl Taylor of Petersburg and Darlene Mutter of Owenton; a son, Patrick Ross of Florence; a brother, William A. Merrell of Florence; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Memorials are suggested to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2011 Madison Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45208.

Kave Gibson, 85, of Oklahoma City, formerly of Independence, died at 11:26 p.m. Sunday at Presbyterian Hospital, Oklahoma City. She was a homemaker and a former member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include sons, Al Gibson of Independence and Harley Gibson of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughters, Alma L. Miller of Oklahoma City, Grace Boehnke of Collinsville, Ill., and Evea Cook of Frederickstown, Ohio; sisters, Patty Stevens of Fort Thomas, Geneva Shadler of Walton and Nancy Jackson of Sevierville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Nicholson Baptist Church, 4226 NW 36th St., Oklahoma City, Okla. 73112.

Paul Kenneth Guilkey, 33, of Newport, died at 1:52 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a manager with Papa John's Pizza and a tee ball coach.

Survivors include a son, Brad Guilkey of Bellevue; a daughter, Josie Guilkey of Bellevue; his father and stepmother, Larry and Glenna Cole of Covington; his mother and stepfather, Paula and Lonnie Scott of Erlanger; brothers, Larry Cole Jr. and Lonnie Scott Jr., both of Newport, and Kenneth Kilgore of Covington; sisters, Charlotte Harrell of Hebron, Trisca Mosley of Lithia, Fla., Lori Poe of Hebron and Many Kilgore of Newport.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Joseph Eugene Jarboe, 71, of Covington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Lura Wright Jones, 86, of Corinth, died Monday at her son's home in Corinth.

She was a homemaker and a former employee of Wheeler and Freeway restaurants, and a member of New Columbus Baptist Church, Corinth. Her husband, Joe Virgil Jones, died in 1978. A son, Wilburn Jones, died in 1964.

Survivors include sons, Arthur Jones of Dry Ridge, Joe Virgil Jones Jr. and Roy Jones, both of Corinth; a daughter, Lura Darlene Dews of Corinth; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at New Columbus Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in New Columbus Cemetery, Corinth. Memorials are suggested to New Columbus Baptist Church, Corinth, Ky. 41010.

Lorraine Derrick Lang, 83, of Dayton, died at 8:41 a.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Raymond Lang, died in 1996.

Survivors include daughters, Donna Sue Scott of Hinton and Georgia Rae Ramsey of Dayton; a son, Larry Lang of Dayton; a sister, Dorothy Sauerbeck of Alexandria; a brother, Albert Derrick of Fort Thomas; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Luis A. Lopez, 77, of Covington, died Friday at his home. He was a volunteer with Be Concerned Inc. in Covington.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Davis of Laughlin, Nev.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at Mother of God Church, Covington. A gathering in the church hall will follow the service. Mr. Lopez bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Virginia Lee Lowe, 84, of Covington, died at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

She was a retired waitress with The Colony restaurant.

Survivors include a son, Ronald Lowe of Metairie, La.; a sister, Chloe Mae Coyle of Covington; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Pine Hill Cemetery, Corbin. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Kenneth Ray Marrs, 49, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church, American Council of the Blind-Greater Cincinnati Chapter, the Human Rights Commission, Covington, and president of the Disabilities Coalition of Northern Kentucky.

Survivors include his stepson, Jamie Warman of Newport; stepdaughter, Katie Warman of Newport; and primary care persons, Garnet Dooley and Carol McElfresh, both of Covington.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Dorothy Miles, 80, of Butler, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

She was a homemaker and a member of Second Twelve Mile Baptist Church, Pendleton County. A son, Shelby Allen Miles, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Shelby Miles; sons, Roger Miles of Butler and James Miles of Latonia; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Stella Payne Rough, 84, of Bellevue, died Monday at her home. She was a retired machinist with Jung Products, Cincinnati. Her first husband, Harvey Payne Sr., died in 1954. Her second husband, George Rough, died in 1994. A son, Harvey Rough Jr., died in 1983.

Survivors include daughters, Debbie Blair and Rose Maxine Keyes, both of Bellevue; a stepson, Gary Rough of Hamilton, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Sandra Rough of Hamilton; brothers, Earl W. Self of Decatur, Tenn., and Fred L. Self of Marysville, Tenn.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Vine Street Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Dayton, 325 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, Ohio 45420.

John A. Russell, 80, of Alexandria, died at 6:37 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a former employee of the Cement Mason Union, a member of Disabled American Veterans, Cold Spring, and was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Arleen Knoechel Russell, died in 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette Russell of Alexandria; sons, Ronald Russell of Crittenden, Michael Russell of Foster and Daniel Russell of Winter Park, Fla.; brothers, Donald Russell of Dayton and James Russell of Falmouth; sisters, Elizabeth Ervin of Alexandria, Polly Pemberton of Coral Gables, Fla., and Nancy Hallman of LaGrange; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Henry W. Trapp, 84, of Alexandria, died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired chief clerk with the B&O Railroad, a farmer and an Army veteran of World War II. A son, John A. Trapp, died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Tom Trapp of Alexandria; a sister, Elizabeth Danner of Versailles, Ind.; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and four step- great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
