William DeWitt, Owen County teacher, school administrator

William R. DeWitt, 73, of Owenton, a teacher and administrator in the Owen County School System, died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Mr. DeWitt served as administrator, director of pupil personnel and assistant superintendent for Owen County schools. He also was principal and basketball coach at Bethany School in Owen County.

He operated DeWitt's Car Wash in Owen ton for six years and retired in 1981.

"Learning and teaching were important parts of our lives, " said Mr. DeWitt's wife of 45 years, Joann Carr DeWitt, who taught school 40 years. "We were really into education."

Mr. DeWitt served in the Air Force in Panama and in the Army in the Korean War.

"The Korean Conflict made quite an impression on him and he studied history at Georgetown College on the GI bill after the war, " said Mrs. DeWitt.

Mr. DeWitt was in a topographic unit in Korea, where he learned how to make maps. As a teacher, he continued making maps for his students.

"He was very creative and liked making things, " said Mrs. DeWitt. "He enjoyed woodworking and also was an artist. He designed the family crest."

Other survivors include a son, David Sterling DeWitt of Danville; a daughter, Debra Parrish of Lawrenceburg; brothers, Harry DeWitt of Louisville and Robert DeWitt of Elizabethtown; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ezel Cemetery, West Lib erty. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Helen Sandlin Barrett, 75, of Highland Heights, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. A son, Dennis K. Barrett, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert Barrett; a brother, Jennings Sandlin of Florida; sisters, Gladys Hilty and Rhoda Wheeler, both of Highland Heights; six grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Carole A. Miller Bowman, 63, of Cold Spring, died Tuesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

She was a retired clerk for IRS, Florence, and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.

Survivors include her husband, John Bowman of Cold Spring; sons, Dan Bowman of Cold Spring, Patrick Bowman of Loveland, Colo., and Tim Bowman of Newport; daughters, Judy Bowman of Fort Thomas and Kelley Bowmman of Southgate; a sister, Judy Fischer of Fort Wright; a brother, Gerry Miller of Appleton, Wis.; and five grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Kidney Foundation, 2330 Victory Parkway East, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206; Campbell County Public Library; or St. Joseph School Library, 4011 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076.

Donald Lee Cole, 68, of Newport, died at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired construction worker with Ralph Chillie Construction Co.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Cole; daughters, Kim Johnson and Angie Burton, both of Newport, and Ruby Garcia of Erlanger; sons, Donny Cole, Charlie Cole, Thomas Cole and Keith Cole, all of Newport, Troy Cole and Wally Cole of Alexandria and Ernest Grey of Carrollton; brothers, Bill Cole and Jay Cole, both of Newport; a sister, Alma Gilley of Silver Grove; 32 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Norma C. Combs, 76, of Covington, died at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired employee of K-D Lamp Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include a son, James Brumer of Covington; and a daughter, Jacqueline Hill of Covington.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at IOOF Cemetery, Jonesville. Catchen Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Beulah Magene Cook, 92, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at her home. She was a member of Cynthiana Christian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and secretary, and a retired employee of Lerman Brothers Department Store, Cynthiana.

Survivors include cousins, Corenne Webster of Dry Ridge, Justine Taylor of Williamstown and Gerald Roland of Crittenden.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cynthiana Christian Church. Visitation began there at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031. Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home, Cynthiana, is handling arrangements.

Richard Flinchum, 44, of West Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Dayton, died Wednesday at his home. He was a restaurant server.

Survivors include his parents, Marvin and Jackie Flinchum of Dayton; a sister, Kathleen Ames of New Vienna, Ohio; and brothers, David Flinchum of Darnestown, Md., Douglas Flinchum of Dayton and Jay Flinchum of Miami, Fla.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. March 2 at First Baptist Church of Dayton. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, 501 Dayton Ave., Dayton, Ky. 41074; or Gideons International, P. O. Box 252, Highland Heights, Ky. 41076. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.

Paul J. Gavin, 75, of Crescent Springs, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired insurance agent with Dempsey & Siders Agency Inc., Cincinnati, and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Borg Gavin; and a brother, James A. Myres of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Passionist Nuns, 1151 Donaldson Highway, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Rita M. "Re Re" Hebbeler, 80, of Lakeside Park, died Monday at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Andrew E. Heiert, 83, of Alexandria, died at 1:27 a.m. Tuesday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. He was a retired brewery worker with Wiedeman Brewery, Newport, and a member of Catholic Order of Foresters.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Gunkel Heiert; a daughter, Debbie Schwarber of Alexandria; a son, Glenn Heiert of Alexandria; sisters, Viola Sauser, Edna DeMoss and Mathilda Heiert, all of Melbourne, Irene Cozatchy of Cold Spring and Louella Painter of Alexandria; brothers, Clarence Heiert and Walter Heiert, both of Melbourne, Lawrence Heiert of Newtown, Ohio, Ervin Heiert of Newport and Louis Heiert of Highland Heights; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:45 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Clarence Hill, 86, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana.

Harry R. Howes Jr., 86, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was an electrotypist with Quality Engraving. His wife, Mary Ellen Howes, died in 1993.

Survivors include daughters, Patty Howes of Melbourne, Joan Ellen Keairnsq of Newport and Mary Lynn Taylor of Southgate; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen cemetery Chapel, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Agee Hunter, 77, of Corinth, died Monday at New Horizons Medical Center, Owenton. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include a son, Gary Hunter of Corinth; brothers, Robert J. Hunter, Delone Hunter and Hillary Hunter Jr., all of Corinth; a sister, Mary Belle Wright of Covington; a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Columbus Cemetery, Corinth.

George William Kingkade, 85, of Owenton, died Tuesday at Owenton Manor. He was a former night watchman for the Owen County Schools, a member of the Owen County Board of Education and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a son, George Gaines Kingkade of Georgetown; daughters, Sandra Neal and Ava Jo Gib son, both of Owenton; a sister, Joyce Lilly of Owenton; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to Owenton Manor Activities Fund, 905 Highway 127 North, Owenton, Ky. 40359.

Helen R. Miller, 75, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., formerly of Covington, died Saturday at Hilton Head Medical Center. She was a former employee of Comisar Restaurant Group in Cincinnati, and was manager of Lakeside Village Apartments, Fort Mitchell. She was a member of St. Luke Episcopal Church in Hilton Head. During World War II, she worked at Ships Command headquarters at the San Diego Naval Base.

Survivors include her husband, George T. Miller; daughters, Debbie Comisar of West Chester, Ohio, and Linda McGaughey of Dayton, Ohio; sons, Thomas Miller of Reus, Spain, and Kenneth Miller of Cincinnati; sisters, Dorothy Baynum of Demossville and Donna Lee Hopkins of Crittenden; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Services have already been held in Hilton Head. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke Episcopal Church, 50 Pope Ave., Hilton Head Island, S.C. 29928. Island Funeral Home, Hilton Head Island, handled arrangements.

William Nieberding, 87, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Wilson Palmer, 84, of Harrison County, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired farmer, realtor and insurance agent with Palmer-Hampton Agency in Cynthiana, and a state senator for the 30th senatorial district from 1961 to 1973. He was a former director of Fifth Third Bank and Harrison Electric Cooperative, a former member of the Eastern Kentucky University board of regents and a former board member of Harrison Memorial Hospital and East Kentucky Power Cooperative. He was a former deacon with Republican Christian Church and a member of the Kentucky Farm Bureau.

Survivors include daughters, Jane Lockwood of Jamestown, N.Y., Joan Wilson of Brandenburg, Patsy Hampton, Susan Kitchen and Mary Catherine Carroll, all of Harrison County; sisters, Amanda Moorehead of Marietta, Ga., and Clara A. Gering of Louisville; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Republican Christian Church, 7888 Ky. Highway 392, Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

Kenneth Allen Phillips, 65, of Cynthiana, died Monday at his home. He was an Army veteran and a member of Southern Acres Christian Church, Lexington.

Survivors include daughters, Lisa Grant of Lexington and Christina Hayes of Shelbyville; brothers, John Phillips and Noel Phillips both of Cynthiana, George Phillips of Nicholasville, Bobby Phillips of Dawson Springs and Bill Phillips of Harrison County; a sister, Janice Lanter of Georgetown; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Camp Nelson National Cemetery, Nicholasville. Memorials are suggested to Sheltered Risks Inc., 758 Beechridge Road, Frankfort, Ky. 40601.

Henry Clay Richardson, 84, of Williamstown, died Monday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown. He was a farmer and a member of Muscle Shoals Baptist Church. His wife, Nettie Richardson, and a son, Ernest Richardson, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Garrett of Madison County; sons, Jason Clay Richardson and Garnett Richardson, both of Grant County, and Edgbert Richardson of Owen County; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Warren F. Toler Funeral Home, Irvine. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Turpin Cemetery, Irvine.

David F. Schwerman, 62, of Florence, died at 5:35 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a machinist and a retired Air Force veteran, and a member of American Legion Post No. 13 in Marysville, Tenn.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Schwerman; a son, David E. Schwerman of Florence; a daughter, Sheila Hall of Erlanger; brothers, Jack Schwerman of Fort Mitchell, Ken Rodgers of Independence and Gene Schwerman of Los Angeles; sisters, Judy Rottman of Sunrise, Fla., Linda Brandenburg of Independence, Mary Ann Metzner of Fort Thomas and Beverly Listerman of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Church, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Gloria Jean King Simmons, 57, of Covington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Survivors include daughters, Debbie Campbell of Latonia, Wendy Smith of Florence and Dannie Sproles of Ryland Heights; brothers, Jack Wilshire of Lexington and Tim Wilshire of Boone County; and sisters, Judy Scott of Lexington and Patricia Studer of North Carolina.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry.

Clarence Mitchell Simms Jr., 70, of Maysville, died at 4:42 p.m. Monday at his home. He was an auto parts distributor with Packer-Federal Mogul in Maysville and a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include sons, Clarence Mitchell Simms III of Maysville and John Mitchell Gantley of Eddyville; daughters, Danita Pollitt of Vanceburg and Melissa Ashcraft of Maysville; a sister, Anna Jane Carpenter Keating of Mesa, Ariz.; and a granddaughter.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Maysville.

Nina Jean Harris Simons, 70, of Poncha Springs, Colo., formerly of Covington, died Feb. 9 in Colorado.

Survivors include her husband, Williams Simons; a daughter, Caroline King of Washington state; sons, Forrest King and James King, both of Colorado; brothers, Homer Harris and William Harris, both of Covington; and five grandchildren.

Services have already been held. All Veterans Funeral Home, Lakewood, Colo., handled arrangements.

Edna Keck Vogelpohl, 88, of Covington, died at 10:53 p.m. Sunday at her home. She was a retired underwriter for Covington Mutual Insurance Co., Covington, and a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Crestview Hills. She was a member of the Kenton County Homemakers Club, Fort Wright Civic Club's Leisure Timers and Rosie Reds Club, and was a former member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Fort Wright. She was a volunteer with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington, and William Booth Memorial Hospital, Covington. Her husband, Vincent Stanley Vogelpohl, died in 1960.

Survivors include a son, Phillip V. Vogelpohl of Naperville, Ill.; daughters, Carol A. Lynch of Fort Wright and Lois V. Hall of Pinnacle, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Medical Foundation, 1 Medical Village Dr., Edgewood, Ky. 41017.

Phyllis Wilson, 61, of Cynthiana, died Monday at her home. She was an employee of Angilo's Pizza. A son, David Wayne Snapp, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Jim Stivers of Paris; brothers, Jackie Wilson of Robertson County and Jimmy Wilson of Harrison County; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Drake Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.
