William Sutherland, 80, mail carrier with sense of humor

William Sutherland was one of the most popular kids at Highlands High School and was known for his sense of humor.

Sixty-one years after Mr. Sutherland graduated, Scott Sutherland discovered his father's yearbook. In addition to collecting signatures from most his of classmates, Mr. Sutherland also signed his yearbook himself:

"To whom it may concern, " Mr. Sutherland wrote in 1940. "They say I laugh a lot, but really I just squint."

"Anyone who knew my father will remember his sense of humor, " Scott Sutherland said. "He could add a light note to any situation. He kept it all the way right up until the end."

Mr. Sutherland, 80, of California, died at 11:20 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. He was injured in a car accident Oct. 14 and never fully recovered, his son said.

He was a mail carrier for many years, serving the California area. He also loved photography, taking pictures professionally and as a hobby. Although he took thousands of pictures of other people, there are very few of him, Scott Sutherland said.

"He was always the one taking the pictures, " his son said. "He preferred being behind the camera."

Mr. Sutherland was a member of California Christian Church, Mayo Lodge No. 198 F&AM in California and the Campbell County Historical Society, and a Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lois Sutherland; sons, Tom Sutherland and Scott Sutherland, both of California; a daughter, Mary Nell Boeckman of Wilder; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 3 p.m. Thursday, with Masonic services at 6 p.m. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to California Christian Church, Route 1, Box 6A, California, Ky. 41007.

Judy Alsip, 56, of Walton, died at 8 a.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a retired clerk with the Internal Revenue Service, Covington, and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Independence.

Survivors include her husband, Chris Alsip; a son, Jeff Alsip of Walton; a daughter, Tina Pickett of Independence; her mother, Maude Ryle of Latonia; a brother, Tom Brumback of Latonia; a sister, Patsy Sipple of Independence; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Eileen Howard Binder, 82, of Independence, died Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center.

She was a retired cafeteria manager at Whites Tower Elementary School in Kenton County and a member of Staffordsburg United Methodist Church, Irish Rovers and Staffordsburg Quilters. Her husband, William Binder, died in 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Leonard of Independence; sons, William Gerald Binder of Hebron and Stephen Bruce Binder of Beavercreek, Ohio; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Anna M. Coppinger, 87, of Newport, died at 10:20 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, Ned Coppinger, died in 1968. A son, Eugene E. Downard, died in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Harold K. Downard of Newport; a stepdaughter, Marian Sutton of Hope, Mich.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Church of the Nazarene, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Charlotte Duvall, 64, of Covington, died at 12:15 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a nurse at Scroggins Nursing Home, Covington.

Survivors include daughters, Bobbie Lahrman of Covington and Diana Simons of Walton; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Thursday. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio.

Kristy Dawn Emery, 32, of Alexandria, died Monday in an automobile accident on U.S. 27 in Alexandria.

She was a cardiac technician at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Survivors include her son, Arlie Stewart Jr. of Alexandria; father, Dave Martin of Florence; brothers, Brian Emery of Alexandria, Gregory Scott Emery of Alexandria and Rob Emery of Newport.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Dorothy Quick Finney, 84, of Holton, Ind., formerly of Fort Mitchell, died Tuesday at Jewish Hospital, Louisville.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Floyd M. "Cotton" Grant, 75, of Walton, died Monday at his home. He was a retired lead signal maintenance worker with CSX Railroad and an Army veteran of World War II. A daughter, Linda Louise Smith, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Bruner Grant; broth- ers, Charles E. Grant of Walton, Glendon E. Grant and David R. Grant, both of London; sisters, Betty Myers of Carlisle, Ohio, and Rose Eversole of Louisville; and a grandson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery.

Leonard Hamilton, 80, of Falmouth, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired employee of General Electric and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Zora Varner Hamilton, died in 1990.

Survivors include daughters, Louise Henson of Cynthiana, Carol Gregg of Kelat and Anita McCarty of Falmouth; a sister, Kathryn Callahan of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Stella M. Heckinger, 85, of Covington, died at 10:17 p.m. Dec. 12 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired binder with Standard Publishing Co. Her husband, Edward Heckinger, preceded her in death.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Cremation will be at Cincinnati Cremation Co.

Edward Herald, 82, of Taylor Mill, died at 4 p.m. Monday at his home. He was a retired sheet metal worker and fabricator and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sons, Larry Herald of Taylor Mill, Gary Herald of Southgate, Roy Herald of Jacksonville, Fla., Terry Herald of Ryland Heights and Troy Herald of Ludlow; sisters, Callie Blythe of Latonia and Maggie Neace of Covington; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Terry McDonald, 52, of Burlington, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a retired gate agent with Delta Airlines and a certified welder.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Maldonado McDonald; sons, Patrick McDonald of New Orleans and Clayton McDonald of Burlington; his father, Chester I. McDonald of Temple, Texas; a brother, Wesley McDonald of Scotland; and a grandson.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Southside Baptist Church, Covington. Visitation will be gin there at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Cremation will be at Southwest Cremation Services, Milford, Ohio.

Eleanor Lee Plummer, 76, of Edgewood, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was a homemaker and a volunteer with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington and South in Edgewood, and a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Plummer; a daughter, Lisa Ann Barnhart of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Karen Mallot of Highland Heights; a brother, Bill W. Cook of Cape Coral, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

John L. Ready Sr., 70, of Astor, Fla., formerly of Burlington, died Sunday at his home.

Juanita Ross, 70, of Union, died Tuesday at her home.

She was an employee of Rubel's Bakery and a member of Heritage Assembly of God Church, Florence.

Survivors include her husband, George Ross; sons, Roy Taylor of Union, Mark Taylor and Troy Ross, both of Burlington; sisters, Sue Royalty, Carol Cobb and Linda Stephens, all of Nicholasville; brothers, Wayne Brandenburg and Jack Brandenburg, both of Nicholasville; and 10 grandchildren.

Elwood Turner Searp, 76, of Bromley, died at 5:08 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired truck driver with Cincinnati Gas & Electric and a member of Bromley Vets and Bromley Christian Church. His wife, Geneva Searp, died in 1991. A son, David Eugene Laughlin, and stepson, Eddie Joe Sims, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Daniel Searp of Kenton Vale; daughters, Sherry Daron of Dixon, Calif., and Jeri Lynn Tarlton of Ludlow; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Hiram "Harry" Siffel, 60, of Morning View, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

He was an employee of William Powell Valve Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Barnes Temple AME Church, Erlanger.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Siffel; sons, David Siffel of Erlanger, Anthony Siffel of Morning View, Wesley Siffel of Verona and William Siffel of Dayton, Ohio; three brothers; four sisters; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highlands Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Arlie Gene Stewart, 40, of Alexandria, died Monday in an auto accident.

He owned R.E. Stewart Tree Service in Alexandria.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Margie Stewart of Alexandria; son Arlie Gene Stewart Jr., Alexandria; daughter Ashley Stewart, Alexandria; sisters Lu Garrard, Dayton and Diane Lippert, Alexandria; brother Andy Stewart, Alexandria, and grandmother Virgie Stewart, Corbin.

Alma L. Stone, 79, of Williamstown, died Sunday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown.

She was a home health care worker and a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church, Covington.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Vernon Paul Wells, 86, of Burlington, died at 9:03 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was the first park ranger in Mammoth National Cave; a technical adviser on alcohol, tobacco and firearms; and a member of Florence United Methodist Church, Good Faith Masonic Lodge, No. 95 F&AM, Indra Consistory Scottish Rite, Syrian Shrine Temple, Erlanger American Legion, Alumni Association of the National Park Service.

He also was an Army veteran of World War II. His first wife, Helen Frances Wells, died in 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Wells of Burlington; a daughter, Frances Brown of Erlanger; stepdaughters, Debbie Jackson of Manassas, Va., and Connie McKean of Erlanger; sisters, Rowena Hill of Dayton, Ohio, and Norma Mason of Hobe Sound, Fla.; brothers, Gene Wells of Cincinnati and James T. Wells of Edgewood; two grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn cemetery Mausoleum, Erlanger.
