Sterling Staggs, professor, Independence councilman

Sterling G. Staggs Sr., 89, of Independence, a college professor and an Independence City Council member, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital in Anderson Township.

He was a retired photolithographer with the Donaldson Art Sign Co. of Covington and taught the skill at the Ohio Mechanics Institute, now a part of the University of Cincinnati.

As a photolithographer, Mr. Staggs made the engraved plates from which signs were made.

He was a member of Independence Christian Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, member of the choir and past chairman of the church's general board.

Mr. Staggs also was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 8 and a former Independence city councilman. The city named and dedicated a park in his honor in 1995.

"He was a very well-rounded person, " said Mr. Staggs' son, Sterling G. Staggs Jr., of Fort Thomas. "He was an avid outdoorsman, and he could out-hike his children. Whatever he did, he put his all into it.

"He was a scoutmaster for many years and enjoyed teaching Sunday School.

"He especially liked working with young people.

"He gave his time to the community, and the community gave back by honoring him by naming a park after him."

Other survivors include his wife, Lillian D. Bell Staggs; a daughter, Sandra L. Taylor of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, Ronald Staggs of Burlington; sisters, Delores Wilson of Elsmere and Maxine Tulley of Erlanger; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday in Independence Christian Church. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services at the church. Burial: Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials: Boy Scout Troop No. 8 or Independence Christian Church, both at P. O. Box 8, Independence.

Ethel Morris Ashbrook, 84, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Grandhaven Nursing Home in Cynthiana.

She was a homemaker, a retired employee of Bullard Co., and was a member of Robinson Christian Church, Harrison County. Her husband, Aaron S. Ashbrook, and sons, Joe Edward Ashbrook and Russell Howard Ashbrook, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Hutchison of Cynthiana; sisters, Mary Margaret McCallister of Fayette County and Nettie Lee Foreman of Lexington; eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Drake Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031; Kidney Foundation, 2330 Victory Parkway East, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206; or American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Paul Edward Brinkman, 61, of Villa Hills, died Saturday at his home.

He was a retired yard master with CSX Railroad, a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Erlanger, the Villa Hills Golf League, and was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Brinkman; daughters, Terri Beuttel of Fort Mitchell, Colleen Carter of Villa Hills, Jennifer Lipps of Florence and Crissy Brinkman of Burlington; a brother, Jimmy Brinkman of Decatur, Ala.; a sister, Barbara Rodgers of Florence; and 10 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mary Queen of Heaven Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested for the American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Pauline G. Pacific Clark, 72, of Villa Hills, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.

Loretta Collins, 102, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington.

Robert Lee Crowe, 56, of Covington, died at 3:55 p.m. Friday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia.

He was a truck driver with B&B; Electric, Cincinnati.

Survivors include sisters, Lois Murray of Florence, Erlynne Crowe of Union and Judy Moran of Burlington.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to Union Baptist Church, U.S. 42 and Mount Zion Road, Union.

Burnis Cundiff, 74, of Covington, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired employee of Square D Co., Florence, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Cundiff.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington.

Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Jerry Beverly Dixon, 65, of Walton, died Saturday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include sons, Jerry and Robert, both of Ludlow; a daughter, Tracey L. Parrott of Ludlow; stepdaughters, Debbie Ponzer and Cindy Roe, both of Independence, Kathy Howard of South Carolina and Robin Grizzell of Booneville; sisters, Sue Norma Gibson of Walton and Mary Jo Litton of Flemingsburg; a brother, John William Dixon of Independence; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence. Alice Netto Dowdy, 82, of Owenton, died Friday at Owenton Manor. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Santa Cruz., Calif. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge Ladies Auxiliary and a United Services Organization volunteer.

Survivors include sons, Mike Dowdy of Owenton and Jerry Dowdy of Scotts Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Jewell Davies of Centerville, Ohio; brothers, Raymond Netto of Springdale, Ark., John Netto of California and Arthur Netto of Simpsonville, S.C.; and six grandchildren.

Earley Faris, 89, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati.

Ralph A. Gamm, 81, of Edgewood, died at 7:52 p.m. Saturday at Health South Rehabilitation Center, Edgewood. He was a retired butcher with Remke Market, Fort Mitchell, and a member of St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. His wife, Charlotte Brinkman Gamm, died in 1974. A son, Jerry Gamm, died in 1982.

Survivors include daughters, Kathy Wolking of Hudson, Ohio, Janet Wolking of Edgewood and Judy Urmos of Florence; a sister, Etta Ash of Covington; a brother, Barnet Gamm of Florence; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Viola Bryant Ison, 75, of Williamstown, died Saturday at her home. She was a member of Stone Wall First Church of God, Scott County. Her husband, George Ison Jr., and a son, Larry Ison, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Esther Glass of Florence and Brenda Roberts of Williamstown; a son, Johnnie Ison of Shelbyville; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Home, Georgetown. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Crestlawn Cemetery, Georgetown. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington.

Norvin Kinman, 75, of Sparta, died Saturday at his home. He was a farmer.

Survivors include sisters, Clydie McIntyre and Dorothy Jones, and a brother, Frank Kinman, all of Warsaw.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.

Alice "Cora Nell" Stafford Lindle, 83, of Lakeside Park, died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was a homemaker and a member of Florence Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Charles Lindle; sons, Dale Lindle of Florence and Terry Lindle of Edgewood; a daughter, Dianne Cochran White of Franklin, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Florence Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Florence Church of Christ, 1141 Boone Aire Road, Florence.

Estella E. Neeves, 72, of Covington, died Saturday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati.

Wallace North, 67, of Augusta, died Saturday at his home. He was a self-employed electric contractor and a member of Augusta Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Hutchison North.

Graveside services were this morning at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Burns Institute, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati. Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta, handled arrangements.

Mayme C. Payne, 87, of Stamping Ground, died Friday at New Horizons Medical Center, Owenton. She was a homemaker and a member of Caney Fork Baptist Church, Rockdale.

Survivors include a daughter, Imogene Brown of Ohio; a son, Jody Payne of Mobile, Ala.; and grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Caney Fork Baptist Church.

Burial will be in Caney Fork Church Cemetery, Rockdale. Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth, is handling arrangements.

John Phillip Richerson, 47, of Union, died Saturday in an auto accident on U.S. 42 in Union.

He was a maintenance worker.

Survivors include a son, Joshua J. Richerson of Union; daughters, Leanna Dawn Barnes of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Katie Jo Richerson of Union; stepsons, Christopher E. Shoemaker of Union and Jason A. Shoemaker of Cincinnati; his father, Charles R. Richerson of Crittenden; sisters, Janice Rose and Sandy Cain, both of Union, Nancy Stephens of Owenton and Rebecca Hubert of New Richmond, Ohio; and brothers, Kenneth Richerson and Charles A. Richerson, both of Walton, and Randy Richerson of Union.

Rilda "Robin" Delane Wilhoit Richerson, 41, of Union, died Saturday at University Hospital, Cincinnati, of injuries suffered in an auto accident.

She was a shipping coordinator with Honeywell Worldwide Logistics Inc., Hebron.

Survivors include sons, Christopher E. Shoemak er of Union and Jason A. Shoemaker of Cincinnati; a stepson, Joshua J. Grace Brooking McKibben Stevenson, 88, of Lexington, formerly of Pendleton County, died at 8:28 p.m. Friday at Cambridge Place Nursing Home, Lexington.

William "Red" Goebel Thompson, 72, of Independence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a telephone lineman with Cincinnati Bell Telephone and a member of Walton United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423 in Elsmere, the VFW Drill Team and Pioneer Camping Club, and was a Korean War veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Thompson; a son, Gary William Thompson of Warsaw; a daughter, Sandra Schott of Milford, Ohio; four grandchildren and three step- grandchildren.

Robert H. Welch, 74, of Carrollton, died Saturday at Swiss Villa Nursing Home, Vevay, Ind.

He was a retired truck driver and a member of First Apostolic Church, Carrollton.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Mae Hendren Welch; a son, Tommy Welch of Carrollton; daughters, Lena Perry of Vevay, Ind., Monica Wainscott of Carrollton and Cathy Wolfe of Madison, Ind.; brothers, William H. Welch of Carrollton and Jerry Welch of North Carolina; sisters, Mamie Jenkins of North Carolina and Janie Moore of Madison, Ind.; seven grandchildren.
