Sanford Earl Carnes, carpenter and farmer

Sanford Earl Carnes, 81, of Florence, a retired self-employed carpenter and farmer, died Tues day at his home.

Mr. Carnes helped construct many homes throughout Boone and Kenton counties.

"He loved being outdoors and was very interested in wildlife, " said Mr. Carnes' son, Dennis Carnes of Flor ence.

"He had several acres of vegetables that he enjoyed tending.

We called him a 'gentleman farmer.' "

Mr. Carnes had numerous friends.

"I don't know that he ever had an enemy in his life, " said Dennis Carnes. "He made friends easily."

Mr. Carnes' wife, Rachel Lorraine Carnes, died March 19.

Other survivors include daughters, Carol Harper of Helena, Mont., and Coreta Kersey of Walton; sons, Larry Carnes of Hampton, Va., Gary Carnes of Houston, Michael Carnes of Edgewood, David Carnes of Covington, Daryl Carnes of Prescott, Ariz., and Greg Carnes of Crittenden; sisters, Doris Carroll of Florence and Cleo McKnight of Park Hills; brothers, Shirley Carnes of Erlanger and Harry Carnes of Edgewood; 28 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be gin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Church Cemetery, Florence.

Memorials are suggested to Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1080 Nimitz View, Suite 208, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45230.

Carol Ann Baker, 55, of Burlington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a home health aide with the hospice.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Baker; sons, Tom Baker and Westley Baker, both of Florence, Steve Baker of Dayton, Ohio, and Don Baker of Burlington; a daughter, Shirley Phillips of LaFollette, Tenn.; brothers, Jimmy Lawson of Erlanger and Jerry Lawson of Edgewood; a sister, Kathy Krebs of Cold Spring; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Nicholas Louis Filacchione, 71, of Edgewood, died at 10:06 a.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a retired self-employed carpenter and masonry expert.

Survivors include a son, Anton N. Filacchione of Edgewood; a daughter, Sheree Rosalyn Filacchione of Melrose, Fla.; sisters, Anna Laverde, Clara Travoli and Adeline Sepre, all of New York; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mother of God Mausoleum Chapel, Fort Wright. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Entombment will be in Mother of God Mausoleum. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Roger A. Haddix, 45, of Washington Township, Ohio, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday at Mercy Hospital Anderson, Cincinnati.

He was an employee of the Ohio Department of Transportation and a member of Batavia Baptist Temple, Cincinnati. His wife, Delecia Ann Back Haddix, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Roger Andrew Haddix of Washington Township; a brother, Donnie E. Haddix of Felicity, Ohio; a stepson, Michael L. Ashcraft of Independence; a stepdaughter, Casey L. Ashcraft of Taylor Mill; sisters, Edith Mae Scott of Batavia, Ohio, Sheryl Taylor of Felicity and Carlene Day of Hamersville, Ohio; and a step-grandson.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to Batavia Baptist Temple, 770 S. Riverside Drive, Batavia, Ohio 45103.

Robert C. Hunter, 77, of Morning View, died Wednesday at Baptist Village Care Center, Erlanger.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Lewis Jackson Sr., 68, of Covington, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati.

He was an employee of Bennett Ford, Cincinnati, a member of VFW Post No. 7453 in Covington and Macedonia Baptist Church, Covington.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Jackson; sons, Bruce Jackson of Burlington, Lewis Jackson Jr. of Atlanta, Timothy Jackson of Oakland, Calif., and Steven Charles Jackson of Newport News, Va.; daughters, Linda Anderson of Houston, Patricia Baker and Pamela Harper, both of Cincinnati; 17 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial services will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church, Covington.

Memorials are suggested to Joseph R. Garr Funeral Home, 930 Findlay St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45214.

Carolyn Zirk Long, 62, of Boone County, died Wednesday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.

Ruth R. McDermott, 95, of Highland Heights, died at 3:43 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a former secretary and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.

Her husband, William McDermott, died in 1969.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Laible of Fort Thomas; nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church.

Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Joseph New Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Health Care Center, 3510 Alexandria Pike, Highland Heights, Ky. 41076.

Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Chase Anthony Nolte, 3 months, son of Lance Nolte of Florence and Natasha Kruse of Independence, died Monday. Other survivors include brothers, Brian Claypool and Drew Nolte, both of Independence; and grandparents, George and Cheryl Nolte of Florence and Wayne and Anita Kruse of Covington.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington, is handling arrangements.

Marie Elaine Richard, 44, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Assembly Church of God, Newport.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Richard; daughters, Loretta Cole of Newport and Cathy Riley of Covington; a son, Jesse Richard of Newport; her mother, Loretta Barnes of Newport; sisters, Betty Brown of Erlanger, Linda Smallwood and Junetta Alexander, both of Alexandria, and Mary Lunn of Batesville, Ind.; brothers, Mark Barnes, Rodney Barnes and Jeff Barnes, all of Alexandria, Ricky Barnes of Elsmere, David Barnes of Covington, Billy Barnes of Shelbyville, Mike Barnes of Boone County and Leonard Barnes of Cold Spring; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Peach Grove Cemetery.

Ellen Schewene, 83, of Hebron, died at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Burlington. Her husband, Earl Schewene, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Philip W. Schewene of Hebron; a daughter, Sharon A. Helphingstine of Falmouth; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Friday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Dorothy Esther Scudder, 66, of Burlington, died Tuesday at her home. She was a sales representative for Noll Builders and a member of Petersburg Baptist Church. Her husband, Herbert "Jiggs" Scudder, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Dwight Black, Darryl Black and Daymon Black, all of Petersburg, and Derek Black of Fort Myers, Fla; a daughter, Donna Scudder of Crittenden; a foster son, Richard Freeman of White Sands, N.M.; stepsons, Bill Scudder of Florence, Kenny Scudder and Kenny Fancher, both of Burlington; two stepdaughters, Linda Blaker of Hebron and Debbie Scudder of Burlington; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Petersburg Baptist Church, 6537 Market St., Petersburg, Ky. 41080.

Pauline Steward, 91, of Newport, died at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Health Care Center, Highland Heights.

She was a retired employee of the R.L. Polk Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include daughters, Gladys Martin and Martha Webster, both of Belleuve, and Jean Turner of Covington; a brother, Raymond Martin of Alexandria; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.
