Marcella O'Brien, 83, nurse's aide

Marcella Buemi O'Brien, 83, of Newport, who worked as a nurse's aide and a seamstress, died Wednesday at Anderson Mercy Hospital.

Mrs. O'Brien worked at Booth Hospital in Covington and later at St. Luke Hospital in Fort Thomas on the maternity ward. She worked part time as a seamstress, making wedding dresses and bridal party outfits. She also was employed by a dry cleaner.

"She was a fabulous seamstress, " said Mrs. O'Brien's daughter, Kate Schloemer of Anderson Township.

"She would sew and knit and crochet. She kind of taught herself. She made lots of clothes for our family."

Mrs. O'Brien was very active in the Catholic church and was past president of St. Anne's Auxiliary Knights of St. John.

"She was always there for everyone, " said Mrs. Schloemer. "When she was your friend, you had a good friend."

Mrs. O'Brien's husband, Charles O'Brien, died in 1982.

Other survivors include a daughter, Betty Brabender of Indianapolis; sons, Chuck O'Brien of Villa Hills, Kevin O'Brien of Cold Spring and John O'Brien of Newport; brothers, Joseph Buemi and Paul Buemi, both of Newport; 19 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Therese Church in Newport, preceded by prayers at 10 a.m. at the Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Newport. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Stephen cemetery in Fort Thomas.

Louis D. Gaines, 45, of Independence, died Oct. 12 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a cab driver.

Survivors include his wife, Melony Gaines; a daughter, Pamela Proud; sons, Michael Gaines, Shaun Spencer and William Reed; his mother, Opal Gaines; brothers, Larry Gaines and Dennis Gaines; sisters, Bernice Hicks and Diana Humphrey; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at T. P. White & Sons Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Charles Hanrahan, 69, of Independence, died today at his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence.

Mary Lehtha Sarbeck Hearn, 80, of Covington, died Thursday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a volunteer with Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center, Fort Mitchell. Her husband, John M. Hearn Sr., died in 1981.

Survivors include sons, John M. Hearn Jr. of Park Hills and Joseph C. Hearn of Villa Hills; a daughter, Vivian Turton of Independence; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Mary Rose Mission, 1543 Russell St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Josephine Reed Kendall, 76, of Bromley, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Charles Kendall, died in 1999.

Survivors include a son, Michael Kendall; daughters, Delores Monroe and Beverly Alfonso, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Nancy Freking of Independence; brothers, George Adams of Crab Or chard and Carl Adams of Hillsboro, Ohio; sisters, Mattie McGee of Hillsboro and Alberta Noeth of Columbus, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Bromley Fire Department, P. O. Box 16205, Bromley, Ky. 41016.

Shelba Jean Nutick, 65, of Warsaw, died at 2:54 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired secretary with the Kentucky Department of Human Resources, a member of the Warsaw Baptist Church and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Nutick; and a daughter, Scarlett Compton of Florence.

Services were this morning at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial was in Warsaw Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042; or the charity of the donor's choice.

Martha Pettit, 87, of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Pinellas Park, Fla.

Survivors include her husband, Harry C. Pettit; and a sister, Mary Sue Blackburn of Dry Ridge.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Sunday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Patricia Ann Racke, 66, of California, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemak er and a member of Persimmon Grove Baptist Church. Her husband, Roger W. Racke, died in 1995.

Survivors include sons, Arthur Racke of Latonia, Thomas Racke and James Racke, both of Alexandria; daughters, Joni Ruffing and Jenny Rauch, both of California, and Diana Wright of Lexington; her mother, Edna Sagrave of Fort Thomas; sisters, Norma Huber of Lebanon, Ohio, and Bev Spoonamore of Alexandria; a brother, James E. Harris II of Independence; and 13 grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Persimmon Grove Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 3 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Persimmon Grove Baptist Church, 5196 Persimmon Grove Road, Alexandria, Ky. 41001.

Clifford Smith, 53, of Walton, died Thursday at his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Irene Spradlin, 68, of Grants Lick, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Hillery Spradlin; daughters, Caroline Vanover of Cold Spring, Mary Arledge and Anita Spradlin, both of Grants Lick; sons, Paul Spradlin of Alexandria and Danny Spradlin of Grants Lick; a brother, Henry Ford Bell of Templeton, Ind.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Plum Creek Christian Church Cemetery, Butler.

Grace Mae Tomlinson, 68, of Newport, died Oct. 19 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, James Tomlinson of Newport and David Tomlinson of Cincinnati; a daughter, Shirley Gregory of West Union, Ohio; a sister, Frances Molnar of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial was in National Cemetery, Dayton.

Mary Kathryn Wilson Vandy, 68, of Frankfort, formerly of Walton, died Wednesday at University of Kentucky Hospital, Lexington. She was a former cook for Brandos Restaurant in Frankfort. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Ludlow.

Survivors include her husband, James W. Vandy of Frankfort; daughter, Kathy Price of Cynthiana; brother, Paul Wilson of Cincinnati; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Walton Verona Alumni Association..
