Sister Georgiana, 86, teacher and archivist

Before making her vows, Sister Mary Georgiana Schulte nearly gave up on her dream of joining the Congregation of Divine Providence in Melbourne. Not from a crisis of faith, said Sister Carleen, provincial vicar of the order, but because of her commitment to her family.

"She had only been here a short time and hadn't become a sister yet when her father became very ill, " Sister Carleen said. "She stayed home (in Cincinnati) for a couple months, but her mother finally convinced her to return to the order. She insisted because that's what her father would have wanted her to do."

Sister Georgiana, of Melbourne, would remain with the order for 67 years. She would later record she joined "to share my love for God and to share that love with others."

She died Monday morning at age 86, after a long career as a teacher, principal and archivist.

Sister Georgiana said teaching, particularly music, was her "greatest happiness, " Sister Carleen said. She taught throughout the Midwest, and locally at St. Edward's School in Cynthiana from 1938 to 1944 and at Corpus Christi in Newport from 1944 to 1951. Sister Georgiana returned to Northern Kentucky to be principal of St. Thomas School in Fort Thomas from 1968 to 1974.

"Everyone always loved her, whatever role she was in - as teacher, principal or archivist. She always was very loving, gentle and compassionate, " Sister Carleen said.

After serving as archivist at St. Anne Convent in Melbourne, Sister Georgiana retired to Holy Family residence, also in Melbourne. But even in retirement, she continued working, performing pastoral care for other sisters at the home, Sister Carleen said.

"Until she broke her hip last year, she was always a good friend there to everybody who needed help, " she said. "Even until the end she was still very sharp and very capable, helping others as best she could."

Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at St. Anne Convent Chapel, Melbourne. Visitation will be from 3 to 4:15 p.m., with a wake service at 3:30 p.m., at the convent chapel. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Divine Providence, Route 8, Melbourne, Ky. 41059.
