Hall-of-Famer Paul Beiting Sr., devoted to baseball

Paul Beiting Sr. devoted much of his life to baseball, and though he was a diehard Cincinnati Reds fan, he directed most of his energy toward rooting for whatever Knothole Baseball team one of his 15 grandchildren was playing on.

Mr. Beiting, 71, died Sunday afternoon at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. Born in Cold Spring, the union carpenter had lived in Bellevue for more than 30 years.

Mr. Beiting was a star pitcher for Newport Catholic High School and later played semi-pro, said his daughter, Karen Roderick of Dayton.

He was inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and into the Knothole Baseball Hall of Fame. He coached in the youth league for 18 years, Mrs. Roderick said, and also served on the board of trustees for Youth, Inc. "He loved kids. His grandchildren were the center of his world, " said Mrs. Roderick.

He also remained a passionate Reds fan, even during this, one of their worst seasons. "He never gave up hope, " his daughter said. "He stuck with them, even this year."

A Korean War veteran of the Army, Mr. Beiting was a member of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662.

Mrs. Roderick said her parents were high school sweethearts. Next month they were to have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Beiting is survived by his wife, Doris Enzweiler Beiting of Bellevue; son, Paul J. Beiting Jr. of Bellevue; daughters Peggy Birkenhauer of Fort Thomas, Mary Sheanshang of Alexandria and Beth Kinnett of Cold Spring; brothers, Msgr. Ralph Beiting of Louisa, Ky, Don Beiting of Cold Spring, Jim Beiting of Silver Grove, Butch Beiting of Fort Thomas and Jerry Beiting of Pendleton County; sisters, Ann Schadle of Highland H eights, Sr. Mary Martha S.N.D., of Fort Wright and Mary Lou Deavy of Fort Thomas; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Bernard Elwood Andes, 59, of Elsmere, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a former cable splicer for Pacific Bell Telephone Co.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Andes; daughter, Barbara Stines of Crittenden; sons, David Andes of Elsmere and Timothy Andes of Independence; mother, Iva Coldiron Andes of Dry Ridge; sisters, Judy Francis of Blue Ash, Ohio, Georgia Ooten of London, Francis Griffen of Georgetown and Patsey Brinker of West Union, Ohio; brothers, Roy Andes of Cincinnati, Morris Andes of Mariemont, Ohio, Charles Andes of Independence and Jim Andes and Frank Andes, both of Athens; and five grandchildren.

There will be no services or visitation. Cremation will be in Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Lillie Baker, 100, of Cincinnati and formerly of Covington, died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

John F. Dedden, 93, of Covington, died at 11:50 p.m. Sunday at Rosedale Manor Nursin g Home, Latonia.

He was a retired police officer with the Covington Police Department and a member of St. Augustine Church, Covington, and Covington Fraternal Order of Police. His wife, Roselyn C. Dedden, died in 1993.

Survivors include his sons, Jack Dedden of Fort Wayne, Ind., Richard Dedden of Fort Wright and Larry Dedden of Covington; daughter, Kathleen Pfetzer of Fort Thomas; sister, Loretta Zembrodt of Fort Wright; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Augustine Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to Scleraderma Foundation, Ohio River Valley Chapter, 7811 Laurel Ave ., Madeira, Ohio 45243.

Mary O. Dehner, 71, of Erlanger, died Saturday at Villa Springs Care Center, Erlanger.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her sons, Clifford "Sonny" Dehner Jr. of Florence, Randy Dehner of Dry Ridge and Vance Dehner of Erlanger; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Forest cemetery Chapel, Erlanger. Visitation will be fr om 10:30 a.m. until the time of services in the cemetery chapel. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn cemetery Mausoleum, Erlanger.

Henry Lee "Hank" Fausz, 70, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Newport, died at 3:40 a .m. Monday at Waldemere Place, Sarasota.

He was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Highland Heights, an Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of Alexandria Lodge No. 152 F&AM.

Survivors include his wife, Fedelia Lee "Teddy" Fausz; son, James Fausz of Morning View; daughters, Barbara Fausz of Sarasota and Cynthia Hebel of Alexandria; sister, Martha Rose "Katie" Messmer of Fort Thomas; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Alexandria Funeral Home and from 10:30 until the time of services Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Jean C. Niemer, 79, of Crescent Springs, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a retired transcriber for the Internal Revenue Service, Covington, and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard Nieme; daughters, Linda Hayden of Cincinnati, Donna Thompson of Whitehouse, Tenn., and Nancy Felton of Morrow, Ohio; sister, Dorothy Fuhrman of Quinton, Va.; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Rhoda Nunn, 100, of Verona, died Sunday at her home.

She was a homemaker and a member of Waterloo Holiness Church. Her husband, Grant Nunn, died in 1984; a son, James Nunn, in 2000; and daughters Thelma Spegal, in 2000, and Margaret Thomas, in 1993.

Survivors include her daughters, Bonnie Juchniewicz of Sparta, Disy Isaacs of Florence, Zella Bayer of Burlington, and Janice Floyd and Vinnie Perry, both of Warsaw; sons, Henry Nunn of Hebron, Ellis Nunn of Florence, Bobby Nunn of Warsaw and Vearl Nunn of Union; 62 grandchildren, 121 great-grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Jack H. Root Sr., 85, of Fort Thomas, died at 9:47 a.m. Sunday at Baptist Regional Medical Center, Corbin.

Arrangements are pending at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Katheryn H. Rouse, 86, of Bradenton, Fla., and formerly of Boone County, died Friday at her home.

She was a teacher for Manatee Elementary School, Bradenton, and a member of the Southside Baptist Church, Bradenton, the Retired Teachers Association and the Manatee County Teachers Association. Her husband, Joseph C. Rouse, died in 1991, and a son, Harold Rouse, died in 1999.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy Rouse Phelps of Bradenton; son, Clinton M. Rouse of DeLand, Fla.; brother, Ira Harris of Helmet, Calif.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Shannon Funeral Home, Bradenton. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mansion Memorial Park Cemetery, Ellenton, Fla.

James W. Russell Sr., 87, of Erlanger, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired foreman with Crouse-Hine Co., Cincinnati. His wife, Rose Russell, died in 2000.

Survivors include a son, James W. Russell Jr. of Ludlow; a daughter, Joan Goetz of Villa Hill s; a brother, Robert Russell of Taylor Mill; a sister, Martha Chaffer of Alabama; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation was to begin there at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Georgia C. Howard Schroader, 88, of Elsmere, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a former waitress and cook. Her husband, Cecil "Brandy" Schroader, died in 1982, and a son, Hiram Gross Schroader, died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Cecil H. Schroader of Jonesville; and sisters, Iva Jo Bratcher of Whitesville and Gloria Kay Shobe of Florence.

Cremation will be in Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. There will be no services or visitation.

William Edward Shriner, 42, of Milford, Ohio, and formerly of Dayton, died Sunday at his home.

He was a carpenter for R.W.S. Remodeling Co., Fort Thomas, and a Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Shriner; daughter, Kristie Norton of Milford; sons, Nathan Barrett, Joshua Shriner and Simon Shriner, all of Milford; mother and stepfather, Violet and Stanley Love, both of Clear water, Fla.; stepmother, Barbara Shriner of Blanchester, Ohio; sisters, Peggy Brueggen of Alexandria, Nancy Doolittle of Tucson, Ariz., and Vicky Henley of Dayton; and brothers, Eric Love of Dry Ridge, Lonnie Love of Cynthiana and Jim Love of Erlanger.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Edgar L. Shryock, 91, of Ludlow, died Saturday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home.

He was a retired electrician with Becker Electric Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Covington. He served as superintendent of the church Sunday school for 25 years and was chairman of the church board. He was a member of Goodwill Lodge No. 345 F&AM in Covington, Scottish Rite Valley of Covington, Grand Masonic Lodge of Kentucky and Sons of Dixie Barber Shop Singers and Quartet.

Survivors include his wife, Verda Mae Henthorn Shryock; daughters, Gayle Pauley of Southgate and Lois Runden of Crestview Hills; a sister, Estelle Lancaster of Covington; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Epworth United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Bernice A. Simpson, 21, of Covington, died at 7 a.m. Saturday at her home.

Survivors include her parents, Kathuryn and David Simpson, both of Covington; brother, John Simpson of Covington; sister, Theresa Simpson of Covington; and grandparents, Sally and Don Totten, both of Cocoa Bech, Fla.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be in Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Eleanor E. Steinmetz, 86, of Covington, died Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

She was a member of Senior Citizens on Fifth Street, Covington, and the Young at Hearts Club at Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia.

Survivors include her sons, Roger Steinmetz of Florence, Will Steinmetz of Dry Ridge and Joseph Steinmetz and Thomas Steinmetz, both of Covington; sisters, Betty Hesse of Cincinnati and Mary Rigby of Florence; and three grandchildren.

Winona Wittmann Stuntebeck, 83, of Latonia, died Monday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Latonia.

She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Her husband, Pete Stuntebeck, p receded her in death.

Survivors include sons, David A. Stuntebeck of Springfield Township, Ohio, and Dr. Peter H. Stuntebeck of Little Silver, N.J.; and one grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:40 a.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Prayers will be at 10:40 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Violet Turner, 90, of Florence, died Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

She was a cafeteria employee of Hilton Hotel and a member of Patriot Baptist Church, Patriot, Ind. Her husband, Stanley A. Turner, died in 1962, and a daughter, Beverly Ann Hoffman, died in 1999.

Survivors include her sons, Donald E. Turner of Florence, Gary Leroy Turner of Rising Sun, Ind., and Raymond S. Turner of Morning View; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
