'Woody' Mills, firefighter, Scout leader

Woodrow "Woody" Mills worked two jobs to make ends meet, but still found time to serve his community as a volunteer firefighter, a Boy Scout leader and a Bible school administrator.

"He was a very caring man, " said his son, William Mills of Fairview.

"Every time he saw somebody who needed help, he would stop and render aid.

"He was fantastic. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it."

Woody Mills died Saturday morning at his home in Fairview. He was 75.

Mr. Mills was born and reared in West Covington.

As a teen-ager, Mr. Mills was a "call boy" for Western Union. His job was to deliver messages railroad companies sent to their employees about their schedules, his son said.

"He pedaled his bicycle all over the city of Covington, " he said.

Mr. Mills was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He worked 30 years for Cincinnati Bell, retiring as a master inspector repair mechanic. At the same time, Mr. Mills was a school bus driver with the Kenton County schools.

He also did yard work at the Ryland Lakes Country Club.

"Yard work was his hobby, " said William Mills. "He loved the yard work, playing with flowers, and it just so happened that it could be a paying job."

Mr. Mills was captain of the Ryland Heights Volunteer Fire Department, a Scoutmaster with Boy Scouts Troop No. 878 in Ryland Heights, and a Bible school administrator with Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

William Mills said his father also was proud of having served six times on Kenton County grand juries.

Other survivors include a daughter, Jeannie L. Callahan of Cincinnati; brothers, Don Mills of Cordova, Calif., and Tom Mills of Illinois; sisters, Jean Kroledge of Cincinnati and Joann Williamson of Southgate; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Swindler and Currin Funeral Home in Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery in Taylor Mill.

Jeremy D. Alford, 21, of Ludlow, died Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati, of injuries suffered in an auto accident.

He was a meat handler with Bluegrass Provisions, Crescent Springs, and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington.

Survivors include his wife, Cinnamon Good Alford; a daughter, Savannah Alford, at home; his mother and stepfather, Pamela and James Augur of Ludlow; his father and stepmother, Curtis and Marlene Alford of Milford, Ohio; a brother, Mike Augur of Ludlow; sisters, Leah Augur and Pamela Augur, both of Ludlow; and grandparents, Curtis and Maymie Alford of Alexandria.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Memorials are suggested to Savannah Alford Education Trust Fund, St. Elizabeth Medical Center Credit Union, 581 Dudley Road, Edgewood, Ky. 41017.

Christopher Shane Bowling, 25, of Florence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a welder with Sachs Automotive Corp., Florence, and a member of First Baptist Church of Walton.

Survivors include his mother, Denise L. Martini of Florence; his father and stepmother, Terry and Nancy Bowling of Crescent Springs; sisters, Cindy Shields of Florida, Megan Bowling and Carrie Bowling, both of Crescent Springs; and grandparents, Joseph Linus and Mary Ann Martini of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.

Earl George Chalk, 76, of Versailles, formerly of Florence, died Friday at Trident Medical Center in Charleston, S.C.

He was a teller with Newport National Bank and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Elizabeth Chalk; a son, Ralph Chalk of Versailles; a daughter, Joyce Knoble of Leesburg, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Thorn of Alexandria; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill.

Ann D. Fuller, 80, of Taylor Mill, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday at her home.

She was a homemaker and a member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church. Her husband, Thomas U. Fuller, died in 1994. A son, Thomas P. Fuller, died in 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith Ann Reese of Covington; a brother, Paul Stevens of Cincinnati; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Norman Holbrook, 64, of Ludlow, died Sunday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Marzella Holland, 61, of Union, died at 8:35 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Holland; a daughter, Paula Mullins of Burlington; a son, Irvin Holland of Union; brothers, Conley Lee Hall and Glenn Hall, both of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sisters, Loretta Lewis of Ludlow, Lillian C. Starkey of St. Petersburg and Blanche D. Wright of Burlington; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Winston C. Johnson, 58, of Carrollton, died Friday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Louisville.

He was a former Carrollton city councilman and owner of Winston's Construction and Winston's Realty companies. He was an Air Force veteran and a former member of Carrollton Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Nell Johnson; a son, Michael Johnson of LaGrange; a daughter, Lori Johnson of Carrollton; brothers, Joe Johnson, Jerry Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, Leon Johnson and Glenn Johnson, all of Carrollton, and Claybourn Johnson of Huntsville, Tenn.; sisters, Jewel Wolfe and Juanita White, both of Carrollton, Barbara Burkhardt of Milton, Mildrene Morris of Charlestown, Ind., and Doris June Hylton of Indianapolis; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

Ermen Kelly, 66, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at his home.

He was a retired employee of LeBus Tobacco Co. His wife, Ruby William Kelly, and stepson, Jesse Slade, both preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons, Ermen Kelly, Michael Kelly and Danny Kelly, all of Cynthiana; daughters, Debbie Griffith of Corinth and Terry Fryman of Cynthiana; stepsons, Jimmy Slade and Harry Slade, both of Cynthiana; stepdaughters, Patsy Brooks and Nancy Argo, both of Cynthiana; a brother, William Kelly of Cynthiana; sisters, Dorothy Tucker, Brenda Thomas and Renie Bryan, all of Cynthiana; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Agnes K. Seaver Lillard, 77, of Florence, died at 8:18 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a beautician and the retired owner of Lillard's Beauty Salon, Florence, and a member of First Church of Christ, Burlington. Her husband, Mono Lillard, died in 1964.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Gibson of Florence; a son, Phillip Lillard of Florence; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery.

William Ecton Mallory, 68, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired production supervisor with ITT Continental Baking Co., and a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Covington and Latonia Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Kincaid Mallory; daughters, Billie Carol Mallory of Lexington, Paula Sue Faig of Cincinnati and Tina Gail Broaddus of Independence; sons, Lanny Ray Mallory of Taylor Mill, Harry Lee Mallory of Ghent and Michael Lynn Mallory of Weyers Cave, Va.; sisters, Wilma Kinman of Frankfort and Donna Cooke of Crestwood; brothers, Gene Mallory of Danville, Ray Dean Mallory of Ludlow, Bobby Mallory of Lexington, James "Pedro" Mallory of Louisville and Paul Mallory of San Antonio; and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Robert E. Mason Sr., 78, of Alexandria, died at 2:51 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a retired clerk with the U.S. Postal Service, Cincinnati, and a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Alexandria. He was a member of Alexandria Masonic Lodge No. 152 F&AM, Indra Consistory of the Scottish Rite in Covington, Happy 100's Club and Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205 in Alexandria. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Helen L. Mason; sons, Robert E. Mason Sr. of Highland Heights and Rich Mason of California; a daughter, Joyce Stortz of Cincinnati; a sister, Virginia A. Voelker of Alexandria; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

George H. Paine Jr., 88, of Ludlow, died Saturday at Lakeside Care Center, Highland Heights.

He was a retired scientist with the U.S. Public Health Service in Cincinnati. He was a member of Ludlow Veterans, the Society of Plant Physiology and the Kentucky Academy of Science.

He taught at Ludlow High School after retiring from government service, and also was a laboratory volunteer with Northern Kentucky University. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a brother, John "Danny" Paine of Florence; and a sister, Virginia Schulte of Independence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Brandon Charles Pierce, 19, of Walton, died Saturday at his home.

Survivors include his parents, Brian and Beverly Pierce; and grandparents, Betty Pierce of Union and Ruth Denham of Somerset.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Linneman Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Sue Carol Seifert, 60, of Latonia, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Jewell J. Scott, 74, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired photo engraver with the Cincinnati Enquirer, a member of the Graphic Arts Union and an Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Scott; daughters, Debra Gaylord of Alexandria and Kathy Combs of Erlanger; sons, Timothy Scott of Ohio, Daniel Scott and David Scott, both of Covington, and Matthew Scott of Florence; a brother, Kenneth Scott of Florence; a sister, Judy Allphin of Mason; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Calvin Shaw, 64, of Morning View, died Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

He was a custodian with Xavier University, Cincinnati, and a member of Staffordsburg United Methodist Church, Independence.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Sue Brueggen Shaw; daughters, Cathy Shaw Altman of Shallotte, N.C., Judy Shaw Folsom of Hampstead, N.C., Jennifer Shaw Quinn and Sandra Shaw Brown, both of Sneads Ferry, N.C.; a son, Chris L. Shaw of Independence; sisters, Dorothy Sanders of Hebron, Carrie Shaw of Independence, Ruth Wilson of Florence and Cecil Shawn of Burkesville; brothers, Robbie Sipple of Williamstown, Chester Shaw of Covington, Ken Shaw of Visalia, and Joe Shawn, Junior Shaw and Robert Shaw, all of Independence; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lina L. Taulbee Smith, 83, of Highland Heights, died at 12:15 a.m. Sunday at Lakeside Care Center in Highland Heights.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, James B. Smith, died in 1999.

Survivors include daughters, Judy Schweitzer of Wilder and Ruth Ann Enzweiler of Melbourne; sons, Donald Smith of Granite Falls, N.C., and James B. Smith Jr. of Cold Spring; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Melbourne United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Judith R. Steele, 57, of Florence, died at 4:50 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, David L. Steele; daughters, Laura Russom of Southaven, Miss., Lisa Farino and Cheryl Fine, both of Memphis, Tenn.; brothers, Larry Ramsey of Erlanger, Warner Ramsey of Edgewood and Junior Ramsey of Florida; sisters, Cindy Still, Gwen Vallandingham and Sonia Forman, all of Florence, Gloria Kelly of Alexandria, Faye Bley of Elsmere and Debbie DeGrella of Louisville; and two grandchildren.

Ronnie Sullivan, 45, of Maryville, Tenn., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday in Maryville.

He was a former cook and a former auto parts store manager.

Survivors include a daughter, April Sullivan of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Shawn Sullivan of Fort Myers Beach; his mother and stepfather, Dorothy and William Kincaid of Elsmere; his father, Leroy Sullivan of Fort Myers Beach; sisters, Sherry Williams of Cincinnati and Sandy Knauff of Minneapolis; and brothers, David Sullivan of Verona and Kenneth Kincaid of Florence.

Services will be private. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
