Louis Johannemann, meat cutter, fireman

The love and responsibility Louis Johannemann felt for family started long ago when, at age 14, he left school during the Great Depression to take a job to help support his parents and siblings. The dedication he showed at that young age to family continued throughout his life, and grew to include his community where he served as a longtime Fort Wright volunteer fireman.

"I think he wanted to serve his community, " said his daughter, Debbie Flerlage. "Fort Wright was a new community then. They were all building their families.... My parents brought up a family that really wanted to be close and stay right here around them."

Louis H. Johannemann, 87, of Fort Wright, died Sunday at his daughter's home in Covington.

He was a retired meat cutter, a trade he learned with that first job in 1928. He retired from Swift Co., Cincinnati.

Mr. Johannemann also took great pride in his service as a founding member of the Fort Wright Volunteer Fire Department and helped fill various jobs as a volunteer for the Fort Wright Civic Club.

In fact, Mr. Johannemann became something of a specialist at odd jobs after he retired as a meat cutter and took what was supposed to be a one-day job with the Diocese of Covington.

"Somebody from the diocese said they had a bush that needed to be planted at the cathedral, " said Ms. Flerlage. "When he finished that, the sister said, "Could you come back tomorrow?' And that "tomorrow' lasted 10 years."

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright, and the Leisure Timers senior citizens group.
