Mary Ann Kelly, author and world traveler

Mary Ann Kelly was a tiny lady who attacked life like a glorious adventure. She shared her experiences in books, screenplays, advertising campaigns and a never-ending store of perceptive, outrageous tales.

She was a world traveler, a doting aunt, an extra in movies, a poet, an author and an animal lover. Her poem "Santa Paws, " about a canine Santa, was made into a plush toy by the Applause toy company in 1987.

Miss Kelly, 75, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington of heart trouble.

"She always had a project in the works, " said her niece, Meg Wellbrock of Cincinnati.

Miss Kelly helped launch television in Cincinnati. When WLWT went on the air in 1948, Miss Kelly was one of the writers.

Miss Kelly was fiercely proud of her family heritage and her Irish background. Although she never married, she enjoyed a family life teeming with children.

"She traveled around the world, " said Mrs. Wellbrock. "We always waited for the Yellow Cab to come to the door... from some exotic place, with her bringing us dolls and pictures."

Her books include "My Old Kentucky Home, Goodnight, " "Rex and the Single Girl, " and "The Trouble Is Not In Your Set."

She was a member of Mother of God Church, Covington.

Survivors include brothers, Dr. James J. Kelly of Fort Mitchell and Joseph B. Kelly of Carlisle, Pa.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Miss Kelly bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to Mother of God Church, 119 W. Sixth St., Covington, Ky. 41011; St. Xavier Church, 607 Sycamore St., Cincinnati, OH 45202; or an animal charity.

Edward Arnsperger, 66, of Independence, died Friday in Villa Hills.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Rose Marie Chilelli Antony, 76, of Cold Spring, died at 10:29 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired registered nurse with Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights, and an employee of Veterans Administration Hospital, Fort Thomas, and Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. Her husband, Robert T. Antony Sr., died in 1988.

Survivors include sons, Dr. Thomas Antony and John P. Antony, both of Highland Heights, and Robert T. Antony Jr. and Richard J. Antony, both of Alexandria; sisters, Julia Shields of Cold Spring, Carmella Schabell of Highland Heights and Marie Cahill of Taylor Mill; a brother, Ralph Chilelli of Alexandria; and 12 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Joseph Paul Birkenhauer, 80, of Latonia, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired loading dock supervisor with Coca Cola Bottling Co., Cincinnati, and an employee of J&D; Food Mart, Covington. He was a member and former shop steward with Teamsters Union Local No. 100, Cincinnati, and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. A daughter, Thamara Jean Birkenhauer, died in 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannine Birkenhauer; a son, Joseph L. Birkenhauer of Batavia, Ohio; brothers, Herb Birkenhauer and Mudock Birkenhauer, both of Alexandria, and Richard Birkenhauer of Newport; and sisters, Charlotte Volpenhein and Eleanor Segor, both of Fort Thomas, Agnes Mader of Alexandria, Clotilda Prince of Philadelphia, Ethel Hils of Phoenix and Esther Scarp of Pompano Beach, Fla.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Michael David Embree, 39, of Denver, formerly of Erlanger, died of leukemia June 13 at his home. He was a retired Navy hospital corpsman.

Surviors include a brother, Steve Embree of Independence; sisters, Vicki Whaley of Crescent Springs and Melissa Garrard of Covington.; and his companion, Steve Unfer of Denver.

Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Victory Baptist Church, Florence. Memorials are suggested to Leukemia Society of America, 105 W. Fourth St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. Buckley Mortuary, Denver, handled arrangements.

Albert Ray Gordy, 65, of Warsaw, died Thursday at Kings Daughters Hospital, Madison, Ind., after an extended illness. He was an employee of Dayton-Walther Co., Carrollton, and a member of Eagle Baptist Church, Carroll County.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Fornash; sons, Kenneth Gordy of Owenton and Bryan Gordy of Warsaw; brothers, Leroy Gordy of Sparta and Evens Gordy of Louisville; sisters, Fran Cunningham of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mary Terrell of Cold Spring and Brenda Howell of Milroy, Ind.; four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Kidney Foundation of Central Kentucky, 2417-B Regency Road, Lexington, Ky. 40503.

Mary Ann Higgins, of Latonia, died at 1:58 a.m. Friday at Mary- Rose Mission, Covington. She was a self-employed graphic artist and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia.

Survivors include a son, Jesse Paredes of Latonia; and a sister, Patricia Lynn Higgins of Latonia.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Prayers will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Mary-Rose Mission, 1543 Russell St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Austin Michael Meadows, son of Kysha Faye Meadows of Walton and Andrew Kee Allen of Union, was stillborn Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Other survivors include grandparents, Janice E. Tucker of Walton, Richard C. Meadows of Cincinnati, and Kerry and Kelly Allen of Union.

No services are planned. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Service, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Laura E. Millard, 80, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at Three Rivers Rest Home, Cincinnati.

She was a bookkeeper with Kahn's Meats Co., and a member of Bellevue Baptist Church and Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky. Her husband, Clark E. Millard Sr., died in 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Held of Cold Spring; sons, Clark Millard Jr. of Peach Grove and David Millard of Cincinnati; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Rob Held Scholarship Fund, in care of Bank One, 34 N. Fort Thomas Ave., Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Frances Aleen Fields Sharp, 78, of Seattle and Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Pendleton County, died Tuesday at her home. She was an artist well-known for her landscapes. Her husband, Charles A. Sharp, died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, R. Michael Sharp of Brockport, N.Y.; daughters, Sandra Espinoza of Seattle and Sheryl Sturtevant of Hudson, Mass.; a sister, Ruthann Wortkman; six grandchildren and one great- grandson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Falmouth United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Charles A. "Honest Al" Simmons, 71, of Independence, died Wednesday at his home.

He was a retired conductor with L&N; Railroad, a member of American Legion Post No. 203 in Latonia, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

His first wife, Lucy Simmons, died in 1984.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Simmons; daughters, Diana Shank of Cincinnati, Ruth Herron of Salem, Va., Peggy Brennan of Union and Rebecca Moore of Tifton, Ga.; sons, Al Simmons of Walton and George Simmons of Independence; stepsons, Wayne Nelson of Cincinnati and Richard Bergstrom of Covington; stepdaughters, Willa Spingfield and Ruth Calvert, both of Falmouth, and Mabel Hart of Brook Park, Minn.; and 26 grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Kenton County SPCA, 1020 Mary Laidley Dr., Covington, Ky. 41017.

Matilda I. Domaschko Stern, 89, of Newport, died at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Joseph F. Stern, and daughter, Rose Huneke, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Anne Stern of Newport; sons, Joseph Stern of Cincinnati, Brother Bernard Stern of Fairfield, Ohio, Father Jerome Stern of London and Andrew Stern of Bellevue; a sister, Marge Kremer of Villa Hills; a brother, John Domaschko of Erlanger; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, followed by prayers. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cold Spring.

James A. Taylor, 70, of Cincinnati, formerly of Falmouth, died Wednesday at Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired supervisor with U.S. Shoe Corp., Cincinnati, a member of Falmouth Baptist Church and a Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Castleman Taylor; a son, Steven Taylor of Cincinnati; daughters, Stephanie Taylor and Sonya Taylor, both of Cincinnati; and a sister, Margaret Nelson of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Monday. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Falmouth.

Peter J. Wilson, 87, of Fort Thomas, died at 2 a.m. Friday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas. He was a retired pipefitter with Interlake Steel, Wilder, and a member of United Steel Workers and St. Anthony Church, Bellevue. His wife, Mary Butts Wilson, died in 1992.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Carmel Manor. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Carmel Manor, 100 Carmel Manor Drive, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.
