Robert Franks, founded New Burley warehouse

Robert Franks would do anything to help his friends.

That's why the man who in 1969 founded the New Burley Tobacco Warehouse in Richwood decided in 1984 to use the building as a flea market on weekends.

Friends wanted such a place to buy, sell and trade, and Mr. Franks obliged them.

He insisted on keeping booth prices low and didn't charge admission to the flea market, which still exists today.

"Whatever you needed - advice, money, whatever - he'd help you out, " said Angel Franks, a daughter from Crittenden.

"By doing that he made more friends than you can imagine. He seemed to know everybody."

Robert "Bobby" Franks, 72, of Crittenden, died Thursday at St.Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was retired from New Burley Tobacco Warehouse, was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church, Dry Ridge, and was a World War II veteran of the Army.

He was a farmer, but worked most of his life in jobs off the farm.

He started Franks Trucking and worked for the Kentucky Highway Department, and was superintendent of the Grant County Highway Department.

He also was president of the Tobacco Growers Association and a member of the American Legion post in Williamstown.

A son, Dennis Franks, died in 1972.

Family members say Mr. Franks' "hobbies" included buying and selling land, used farm machinery and anything else he could get his hands on.

Outspoken and always ready for debate, Mr. Franks never backed down from political discussions, especially when it concerned his beloved Democratic Party.

That fire, however, accompanied love and compassion when it came to his family.

"The man was not afraid to lay it on the line, " Angel Franks said.

"If it was politics or family life, he would preach to you until the message got through."
