Jack Duell, upholsterer; legacy of family, honesty

There was little glamorous about Jack Duell's life, yet there was something wonderful about it, say his daughters.

"He treated everybody the way he would have wanted to be treated, and he treated us (his children) special. Everyone of us was special, " said a daughter, Jeanne Apgar of Florence.

John "Jack" G. Duell, 81, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas.

He was an upholsterer with Schutte Upholstery and Furniture in Cincinnati for more than 30 years. Mr. Duell did a lot of nice work in that little store.

"He designed and re-covered furniture, and he was very proud of his work, " Ms. Apgar said.

He made other things as well - a swimming pool when his older children were small, a headboard for a granddaughter.

Mr. Duell loved to golf, walked five miles a day until he went into a nursing home six years ago and loved to play euchre and cribbage.

He was a member of Bellevue Vets and an Army veteran of World War II.

He'll be most remembered for his personality, however, says another daughter, Marguerita "Margie" Riddle, of Cincinnati.

"Everybody loved Jack, " she says, noting that he was easy-going and had a good sense of humor.

He left a good legacy, Ms. Riddle says, "a sense of family, church and honesty."
