Dr. Morris Garrett, Marine, physician, historian, lect urer

Dr. Morris McMullen Garrett distinguished himself as a U.S. Marine, a physician, historian and lecturer, but never lost sight of his Appalachian heritage.

In fact, his family says the former Campbell County assistant coroner managed weekly trips to the hills around his native Booneville just to extend his support to the many impoverished families living there.

"He was raised in the mountains of Kentucky, and he went on and helped a lot of people in Appalachia, " said Dr. Garrett's wife, Nelle.

Dr. Garrett, 82, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore near Lexington.

Dr. Garrett retired as chief radiologist at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas in 1992. He practiced at the hospital for 40 years.

Dr. Garrett was Campbell County assistant coroner at the time of the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in 1977. He served as the initial officer-in-charge of identifying the bodies of the 165 people who perished in the blaze.

He also served as president of the Northern Kentucky Medical Society and was team doctor for the Fort Thomas Highlands High School Bluebird football teams in the late 1960s.

Outside of medicine, his interests and efforts centered around the hills of his birth in Eastern Kentucky. He was a frequent lecturer on the subject of Appalachia and donated his mammoth collection of Kentucky historical books, oral histories and photographs to Northern Kentucky University.

Dr. Garrett played a key role in obtaining the donation of Pilot Knob to the state of Kentucky. The hill is known to be the spot on which Daniel Boone first glimpsed Kentucky's Bluegrass region. Dr. Garrett also was instrumental in obtaining land for the creation of Sergeant Park in Campbell County.

Dr. Garrett was on the board of directors for the Ephraim McDowell House in Danville, the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky chapter of the Nature Conservancy.

He was founding president of the Campbell County YMCA and head of the Northern Kentucky Civil Defense Organization.

Before entering medicine, Dr. Garrett served as a Marine Corps drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C. He went on to become a second lieutenant in the Pacific theater from 1942 to 1944. He was wounded and promoted to captain before being sent home.
