Franklin Dusing, co-owner of the family ice business

Franklin H. Dusing knew more about Erlanger and Elsmere than most people and told anyone who asked anything they wanted to know.

"He knew everyone who was born in Erlanger and everything about the community, " said his widow, Margaret Dusing.

He acquired much of that knowledge through his work in the family's ice business. Mr. Dusing was a former owner of Dusing Brothers Ice Manufacturing Co. in Elsmere.

"His father and uncle started the ice business in 1928. My husband Franklin was the second generation and now it has moved into the third generation, " said Mrs. Dusing. His cousin's three sons now run the business.

Mr. Dusing, 89, of Covington, died Thursday at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospice Unit.

He grew up on a dairy farm, the site of the current Tewes Poultry Farm in Erlanger.

"From the time he was 13, he drove the milk truck with his father and delivered milk throughout the area, " said Mrs. Dusing.

He delivered ice to businesses in the same area as a young man.

"When he first went into the (ice) business, they were long days, " Mrs. Dusing said.

During World War II, he made goods at a war materials plant in the Cincinnati area and later worked for Sky Chef, a division of American Airlines. He faced a compulsory retirement at 65 and went back to the ice house. He worked there five days a week until he was 80.

"He loved it. Being involved with people was the main thing, " Mrs. Dusing said.

Mrs. Dusing said her husband never met a stranger and was always cracking jokes. He loved watching the Reds and riding in his car.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta McKinley; a brother Edwin J. Dusing; and a son, John Franklin Dusing.
