Edgar E. Baker, Kenton teacher and principal

Edgar E. Baker, a teacher and principal in the Kenton County school system for 3 3 years, was always running across former students.

"Everywhere we went, somebody knew him, " said his daughter, Nancy E. Baker of Demossville. "Somebody always recognized him. He was a well-respected man."

Mr. Baker, 89, of Demossville, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. He worked at several schools in the Kenton County system. He was the first principal of Taylor Mill Elementary School, where he worked from 1953 to 1973. He also served as a teacher at Piner Elementary and principal and teacher at Visalia Elementary.

He enjoyed working with students.

"He was strict but gentle, " his daughter said. "You knew no meant no."

Mr. Baker was also a deacon at Wilmington Baptist Church.

He had a good sense of humor and was always pulling a prank, Ms. Baker said.

Her father also worked on a farm, raising tobacco and cattle. He loved being with his family, his daughter said.

"My mother died when I was 4, so he raised us kids. He was a mother and father, " Ms. Baker said.

Mr. Baker's first wife, Mary R. Baker, died in 1957.

Other survivors include his wife, Marjorie R. Baker; daughters, Anne Hill of Knoxville, Tenn., and Norma Huth of San Diego; a son, Edgar Baker Jr. of Lexington; stepdaughters, Susan O'Bannion of Staffordsburg, Sally McClafferty of Covington and Elizabeth Gaskins of Independence; stepsons, Robert E. Rich of Cincinnati and John Rich of Latonia; a brother, Ellis Baker of Mount Zion; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Wilmington Baptist Church, Morning View. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Wilmington Baptist Church, 15472 Madison Pike, Morning View, Ky. 41063.

Carrie Goodsin Albert, 74, of Dayton, died Feb. 15 at Clermont Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a 1948 graduate of Speers Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, and a member of Speers Hospital Nurses Alumni Association and St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Her husband, George Albert Jr., died in 1981.

Survivors include sisters, JoAnn Clouse and Patty Patrick, both of Michigan, and Evelyn Condo of New Jersey; brothers, Lee Goodsin and Wayne Goodsin, both of West Virginia, and Nick Goodsin of Virginia; nieces and nephews.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Bernard Church. Mrs. Albert bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to St. Bernard Church, 5th and Berry, Dayton, Ky. 41074.

Jimmie Bickers, 52, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Sunday at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was an AutoCad drafter with Day Zimmerman Micro Electronics, Lakeland, and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Lakeland, the Florida Paddlers Association and United States Canoe Association.

Survivors include his wife, Pat O'Brien Bickers; sons, Daniel Bickers of Mountain City, Tenn., and Brian Bickers of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughters, Kimberly Medlin of Orlando, Fla., and Letisha Reese of Springville, Ala.; his mother, Mary Evelyn Bickers of Punta Gorda, Fla.; a brother, Jack Bickers of Punta Gorda; a sister, Bonnie Albertson of Punta Gorda; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Gentry Morrison Northside Funeral Home, Lakeland. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Friday.

Lila Binder, 66, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Episcopal Church, Ashland.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen M. Binder of St. Pete Beach, Fla.; and a son, Kevin A. Binder of Lexington.

Services will be at noon Thursday at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Harry A. Farrar, 90, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Monday at Hospice of Cincinnati. He was a retired steel worker with Ryerson Steel, Cincinnati, a past president of United Steel Workers Union Local No. 3963 and a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Newport. His wife, Edna Herweh Farrar, died in 1989. A daughter, Beverly Bramlage, died in 1996.

Survivors include sisters, Dolly O'Neal of Grand Rapids, Mich., Dorothy Goetz of Florence and Virginia Reising of Highland Heights; brothers, Marvin Farrar of Southgate and Preston Farrar of Falmouth; and two grandsons.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242; or American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Ora Gladys Foley, 90, of Florence, died Monday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a homemaker and an employee of the former Gibson Hotel, Cincinnati, and Remington-Rand in New Orleans. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Latonia, and a member of the church choir. Her husband, John W. Foley, died in 1990. A daughter, Wanda Lee, died in 1989.

Survivors include grandchildren, Kathy Estenfelder of Florence, Debbie Schneider of Midland, Texas, Shawna Schehy of Batavia, Ohio, Adrian Wayne Lee II of Aurora, Colo., Mike Lee of Riverview, Fla., and Terry Lee of Mexico; 20 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. Mrs. Foley bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to Fairhaven Rescue Mission, 260 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Cameron Allen Maines Gordon, son of Robie Allen Lewis of Warsaw and Melinda R. Gordon of Florence, was stillborn Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Other survivors include grandparents, Randy and Jeannine Gordon of Dry Ridge and Rick and Rita Maines of Florence; and great-grandparents, Marvin and Hazel Gordon of Cordova and Keith and Janice Kenner of Williamstown.

Graveside services were this morning at Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, is handling arrangements.

Claude E. Howard, 74, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Edgemont Manor in Cynthiana. He was a farmer.

Survivors include sisters, Sarah Jones, Evelyn Mattox and Wanda Mattox, all of Cynthiana; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will begin there at noon. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Harrison County. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

Marian Rouse, 89, of Latonia, died at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Kenneth Ray Smith, 48, of Louisville, died Tuesday at Caritas Medical Center, Louisville. He was a factory worker.

Survivors include a son, Joshua Kenneth Joe Smith of Hudson, Fla.; his parents, Ellis Smith of Scottsburg, Ind., and Agnes Smith of Carrollton; brothers, David Smith of Dry Ridge and Wayne Smith of Bethel, Ohio; and sisters, Katie Breeden of Falmouth, Patsy McGuire of Carrollton, Agnes Rader and Mayme Raisor, both of Pleasureville, Susie Drury of Carrollton and Carol McDole of Rising Sun, Ind.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Carrollton Wesleyan Church. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Carrollton Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Kenneth Smith Burial Fund, in care of Darrell Breeden, Route 4, Miller Road, Falmouth, Ky. 41040. Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.

Gertrude Theresa Stoeckle, 101, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

Arrangements are pending at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Mildred Ada Walters, 96, of Fort Thomas, died at 7:15 p.m. Jan. 3 at Carmel Manor in Fort Thomas. She was a saleswoman with Compton's Encyclopedia and Louis Marx Furniture, Newport. She was a member of the Fort Thomas Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, operated the first nursery school in Fort Thomas in the 1930's and was a nurse's assistant at the Fort Thomas Army Post during World War II. Her husband, Jacob F. Walters, died in 1974. A son, Robert F. Walters, died in 1998.

Survivors include sons, J. Wellington Walters of Fort Thomas and Stanley L. Walters of Boston; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Carmel Manor Nursing Home, 100 Carmel Manor Road, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
