Jerry Allen Courts, believed in miracles

Jerry Allen Courts wasn't afraid to ask for miracles. And sometimes he got them .

Mr. Courts was a toolmaker at Tente Casters in Hebron and raised tobacco, sheep and horses on his farm near Grants Lick - until an auto-immune disease ravaged his kidneys in 1993.

Mr. Courts received a kidney from his daughter Erin in 1995. The kidney transplant received extensive local news coverage and made national headlines. It also gave Mr. Courts another four years at Tente Casters and another five with his family.

Mr. Courts, 50, who was diagnosed about 18 months ago with a form of cancer similar to leukemia, died at 1 p.m. Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati after a sudden leak of his abdominal aorta.

He vas a very optimistic person, said his wife, Bobbi.

"He could always take a bad situation and see something positive in it, " she said.

He loved people, loved life and was productive, Mrs. Courts said.

"You always saw him doing. He was a worker. He was not an idle man, " she said, noting that he busied himself on his farm when he wasn't at work.

He loved taking things apart, was a lifelong learner and a patient teacher, his wife said.

He lived by the motto "lest we forget, " Mrs. Courts said, and had his life in perspective with God first, his family next and all of God's creation third.

"He grew stronger in his Christian witness through his illness, " she said. "Everybody said he was an inspiration."

Mr. Courts was a member of Plum Creek Christian Church, Butler.

Other survivors include his daughters, Carol Beth Kniskern of Crittenden, Erin Pinkston of Butler and Julie Courts, at home; and sisters, Cheryl Heim of Butler and Janine Combess of Frankfort.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Plum Creek Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery, Foster. Memorials are suggested to the Julie Courts Scholarship Fund.

William Brown, 76, of Demossville, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a technician with Singer Sewing Machine Co., a member of Disabled American Veterans and American Legion Post No. 137 in Williamstown, and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Pauline Brown, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Joel Wesley Brown of Piner; daughters, Sharon Sue Gibson of Elsmere, Janet Kimberly Rust of Piner, Vicki Lea Webb of Oxford, Ohio, Patricia Ann Mullins of Demossville, Judith Gayle Peebles of Dry Ridge and Deanna Rae Silvey of Erlanger; brothers, Carl Brown of West Liberty and Dave "Bud" Brown of Middletown, Ohio; a sister, Laura "Bert" Brown of Centerville, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren and one great-great-step grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Esther Schoultise Bushman, 87, of Jeffersontown, formerly of Highland Heights, died at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday at Norton Hospital, Louisville.

She was a seamstress with the Rauh Shirt Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Senior Citizens of Jeffersontown.

Survivors include sons, Robert L. Bushman of Kingwood, Tenn., and Bruce E. Bushman of Jeffersontown; a sister, Freda Slayback of Highland Heights; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Elizabeth Ann Calvert, 61, of Morgan, died at 9 p.m. Saturday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.

She was a school bus driver with Pendleton County Schools, a deputy Pendleton County jailer and a deaconess with Morgan Christian Church, Pendleton County. She volunteered more than 400 hours to the former Pendleton County Hospital, and was a member of Bethel 12 Jobs Daughters and Falmouth Chapter No. 481 Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, James Lewis Calvert; a son, Roger Calvert of Morgan; daughters, Cyndi Clos of Falmouth, Regina Gentry of Morgan and Julia Smith of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Charles Allan "Tinker" Marquardt of Falmouth; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery.

Daniel Miller Capito, 77, of Cincinnati, formerly of Erlanger, died at 8:06 p.m. Friday at Montgomery Care Center, Cincinnati.

He was a retired territorial manager of operations and sales with General Electric and a veteran of the Air Force and Air Force Reserve.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Schweigert Capito; and brothers, George Capito of Okeechobee, Fla., and Eugene Capito of Spokane, Wash.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Charles Conner, 76, of Newport, died at 12:20 a.m. Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

He was a retired coal miner and an employee of the IGA grocery store in Bellevue.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Conner; daughters, Charlene Farmer of Newport and Sue Conner of Covington; sons, James David Conner of Crittenden, Paul Conner and Thomas Conner, both of Newport; a sister, Jane Ferguson of Cincinnati; a brother, Philip Conner of Whitesburg; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Mary Dehan, 89, of Latonia, died Sunday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Robert James Finnan, of Crestview Hills, died Sunday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Edna E. Lightfoot, 87, of Newport, died Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, James Lightfoot, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, James Lightfoot Jr. of Covington; daughters, Elenora Jones of Ratcliff and Rosetta Lightfoot of Newport; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Opal V. McClanahan, 63, of Newport, died at 5:55 p.m. Friday at her home.

She was a waitress with the Town and Country Restaurant, Park Hills.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry McClanahan; daughters, Sherry Theis of Newport and Theresa Miles of Covington; sisters, Bea Taylor of Fort Thomas, Bonnie Hornsby of Hebron, Mae Creekmore of Newport, Wanda Sprague of Warsaw and Sharon Ginn of Crittenden; a brother, Michael Mullins of Latonia; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.

Virginia P. "Babe" Moore, 86, of Southgate, died Friday at Baptist Convalescent Ce nter, Newport.

She was a retired office manager with Crown Distributing Co.

Survivors include a sister, Burette "Chubby" Shriver of Southgate.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Jason Daniel Nelsen, 21, of Erlanger, died at 1:13 a.m. Saturday at his home.

He was a student with Kentucky Career Institute, Florence.

Survivors include his parents, Becky J. Nelsen of Florence and Victor D. Nelsen of Erlanger; a brother, Joseph Michael Nelsen of Erlanger; and grandparents, George and Rosemary Nelsen of Taylor Mill and Norman and Della Edmondson of Florence.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Arthur Owens, 88, of Florence, died Friday in an auto accident in Florence.

He was a greeter with the Wal-Mart store in Florence and a member of Warsaw Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. His wife, Mary Owens, died in May.

Survivors include daughters, Joyce Ellis of Warsaw, Barbara Warth of Lexington and Wanda Owens of Belton, Texas; a son, Wesley Owens of Miami; a sister, Irene Queen of Lexington; a brother, Dusty Owens of Lexington; six grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.

David N. Tibbs, 53, of Pickerington, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Saturday at Grant Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio.

He was a regional sales manager with Arctic Express in Columbus and a member of Pickerington American Legion Post No. 283, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Eagles Aerie and an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Osterhage Tibbs; sons, Douglas Tibbs, Matthew Tibbs and Daniel Tibbs, all of Pickerington; his father, Howard N. Tibbs of Covington; and a sister, Deborah Kindred of Nicholasville.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Seton Parish, Pickerington. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home, Pickerington. Burial will be in Violet Cemetery, Pickerington.

Helen Louise Tucker, 80, of Brooksville, died at 12:34 p.m. Saturday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.

She was a homemaker and a member of Powersville Christian Church. Her husband, Dan Tucker Jr., died in 1975. A son, Larry Tucker, died in 1968.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen Sue McDaniel of Brooksville; one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powersville Christian Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville, and from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery.

Blanche Liggett Beckner Walton, 87, of Florence, died Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

She was a homemaker and a member of East Bend Baptist Church Ladies Adult Classes and Women's Missionary Union. She was the former owner of Burlington Grill Restaurant.

Her first husband, John Beckner, died in 1942. Her second husband, William S. Walton, died in 1980. A son, Dan Beckner, died in 1992, and a daughter, Peggy Louden, died in 1998.

Survivors include sons, John Sonny Beckner of Cincinnati and William Billy Walton of Oneida; daughters, Norma Manley of Brooksville, Fla., and Ann Stephens of Owenton; 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Baltimore Pike Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Irma Louise Kehr Winkler, 74, of Latonia, died at 4:20 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was a retired employee of Shillito's Department Store. Her husband, Carl Lambert Winkler, died in 1999.

Survivors include a brother, Chester Kehr of Cincinnati; and a sister, Edith Egbert of Cincinnati.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill. Entombment will be in Mother of God Mausoleum, Fort Wright.
