Zada Parsley, teacher, cheerleading sponsor

Zada Rae Moore Parsley was outgoing and well-liked - attributes that helped he r forge a successful career as an educator.

She went to work in the Bracken County schools as an English teacher in 1941 and spent 33 years in the district.

Mrs. Parsley, 89, of Brooksville, died at 9 p.m. Friday at her home.

"She was a very good teacher, " said her dear friend and colleague Orinona Puccini, adding she was outspoken and had a good sense of humor.

She and her husband, who was a principal and basketball coach at Bracken County High School, also sponsored and chaperoned the cheerleading squads for the Polar Bears for 26 years.

Mrs. Parsley developed one of the finest library programs in the state and was elected president of the Kentucky Association of School Librarians. The association later honored her as its 1973 Outstanding School Librarian.

She helped found the Bracken County Public Library and, in recent years, was active in the Kentucky Covered Bridge Association. She helped save a covered bridge in Bracken County severely damaged in the 1997 flood. The bridge is being rebuilt at a new location.

She was a member of Brooksville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jarvis Parsley.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bracken Memorial Cemetery, Brooksville.

Memorials are suggested to Parsley Scholarship Fund, in care of First National Bank, Brooksville, Ky. 41004.

Ronda M. Arnett, 38, of Union, died Thursday at her home. She was a bus driver for the Boone County School System, a member of the National Education Association and a part-time employee of Sam's Club.

Survivors include her husband, Danny Arnett of Union; daughter, Jessica Arnett at home; son, Danny Arnett at home; parents, John and Elda Chestnut of Cincinnati; sister, Kim Knisely of Wilmington, Ohio; brothers, John Chestnut of Indiana and Pete Chestnut of Michigan.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Homne, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Holt Family Cemetery, Independence.

William Thomas "Pete" Baird Sr., 77, of Covington, died at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a retired pipefitter with Interlake Steel in Newport, a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Covington and the AFL-CIO, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Stella Opal Baird; a son, William T. Baird Jr. of Grants Lick; a daughter, Patsy Jane Bradley of Covington; a brother, Homer Dempsey Baird of Newport; sisters, Naomi Ruth Decker of Plant City, Fla., and M. Eva Wood of Covington; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Kenneth R. Baldwin, 75, of Newport, died Saturday at his home.

He was a retired truck driver with Gray Drugs Transportation.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah Shelton Baldwin; a son, Kenneth Baldwin Jr. of Hamilton, Ohio; a stepson, James W. Wardlow of Brooksville; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Jeffrey A. Boden, 33, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was a general manager with Cornerstone Insurance Co.

Survivors include his wife, Tracy Boden; a son, Alex Boden; a daughter, Catie Boden; a sister, Jamie Kallmeyer of Fort Thomas; his mother and stepfather, Jackie and Mike Frith of Fort Thomas; and father, Jacob Boden of Florida.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Cold Spring.

Memorials are suggested to Jeffrey Boden Children Scholarship Fund, in care of any Fifth-Third Bank.

Cremation Society of Greater Cincinnati is handling arrangements.

Helen Earls Burlew, 82, of Butler, died Saturday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler.

She was a homemaker and a member of Eastside Park Christian Church. Her husband, Barton Burlew, and daughter, Janet Hampton, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include brothers, Charles Earls and Herbert Earls, both of Butler; sisters, Ada Callan of Milan, Ind., Brenda Stricker of Leesburg, Fla., and Pearlie Staggs of Germantown; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery.

Veda Adams Christophel, 94, of Fort Mitchell, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at her home.

She was a homemaker and an owner of Covington Plating Co., and a member of West End Church of Christ in Montgomery, Ala. Her husband, Stanley M. Christophel, and daughter, June Ann Wooten, both preceded her in death.

There are no immediate survivors.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Lee F. Dragoo, 61, of Bellevue, died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was a retired newspaper carrier with The Kentucky Post and a member of Bellevue First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Tammie Ray Dragoo of Hopkinsville; sons, Lee Dragoo Jr., James T. Dragoo and Mark Dragoo, all of Bellevue, and Anthony Dragoo of Covington; his mother, Vivian Woolums Dragoo of Highland Heights; a brother, James T. Dragoo of Alexandria; a sister, Judy Carroll Goodman of Duluth, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Tucker, Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home, Georgetown. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Georgetown Cemetery.

Joseph L. Finn, 43, of Erlanger, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a dock worker with Roadway Express, Cincinnati, and coached the softball team with the Erlanger-Elsmere Recreational League.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Finn; a son, Gary Hunt of Erlanger; daughters, Denise Adkins of Burlington and Tatia Finn of Erlanger; a brother, Michael Finn of Greensboro, N.C.; and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Florence Mary Ford, 80, of Bellevue, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Stephen Church, Newport. Her husband, Clarence Ford Sr., died in 1992. Sons, Charles Ford, Michael Ford and Orville Ford, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Winifred Alford and Judith Herald, both of Newport, and Janice Bickel of Bellevue; sons, Darrell Ford of Burlington, Timothy Ford of Fort Thomas and Clarence Ford Jr. of Newport; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Eliza Rogers Giles, 88, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at Grand Haven Nursing Home in Cynthiana.

She was a retired nurse's aide and a member of Connersville Christian Church. Her husband, Vernor Giles, and son, Bobby Ray Giles, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include a sister, Hattie Lawson of Park Hills; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Leroy G. Henry, 67, of Williamstown, died at 7:27 p.m. Friday at his home.

He was a retired night manager with Ninth Street Parking Garage, Cincinnati, and a farmer. He was a member of Dry Ridge Baptist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean War. A daughter, Dana Susan Henry, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Sudie Brock Henry; sons, Leroy Michael Henry of Williamstown and Jeffrey Dale Henry of Erlanger; daughters, Deborah Sue Ruth-Cammack of Owenton, Diane Sherry Henry and Deena Sharon Gorman, both of Dry Ridge; brothers, Richard "Jack" Henry of Crittenden and Charles "Jake" Henry of Fort Thomas; sisters, Sylvia Katherine Jackson of Lexington and Emma Fern Hubbard of Hermitage, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.

She was a retired bank teller with Rosedale Federal Savings and Loan, Latonia, and a member of St. Mark United Church of Christ, Latonia.

She was a member of the church Ladies Guild, the church choir, and the church Post Marks club. Her husband, Clayton Hicks, died in 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna J. Berkemeier of Edgewood; and a son, John C. Hicks of Lexington.

Ida Catherine Holland, 90, of Florence, died Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Latonia Church of Christ. Her husband, Charles Holland Jr., died in 1971.

Survivors include daughters, Beverly Holland and Janis Holland, both of Northport, Fla.; a son, Charles Holland of Florence; a sister, Florence Daugherty of Lexington; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Virginia Lou Miller, 63, of Warsaw, died Sunday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton.

She was a former hairdresser and a member of English Christian Church.

Survivors include daughters, Jackie Lynn Maiden of English and Janet Maiden of Worthville; a son, Rodney Maiden of English; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Roy Burnside Neal, 66, of Alexandria, died at 2:20 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was an employee of Medical Logistics Institute in Burlington, a member of Marshall Schildmeyer VFW Post No. 6095 in Latonia, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Sue Neal; a son, Randall Wayne Neal of Batavia, Ohio; a brother, James Pleasant Neal of North Platte, Neb.; and sisters, Bettijane Lockard of Alexandria and Joanne Weaver of Cincinnati.

Francis E. "Bud" Piper, 80, of Taylor Mill, died at 9:10 p.m. Sunday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

Floyd Powell, 88, of Falmouth, died Saturday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.

He was a retired farmer and a member of Oakland Christian Church, where he was an elder and deacon. He was also a member of the Falmouth Council of Junior Order of United American Mechanics Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Velma Mae Wagner; daughters, Dorothy Louise Herron and Joyce Ann Mains, both of Falmouth, died Carolyn Simpson of Cynthiana; sons, Ernest Donald Powell of Goose Creek, S.C., and Edwin Lee Powell of Springfield, Mo.; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and an assembly line worker with Kenner Toy Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Taylor Mill Seventh Day Adventist Church. Her husband, Oscar Robinson, died in 1963.

Dutch Rolfsen, 86, of Ludlow, died Friday at his home.

He was a retired serviceman with Kenton County Water Works and chief of the Ludlow Auxiliary Police. He was a member of White Oak Club in Ludlow and Crusaders of St. Elizabeth Medical Center, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Rolfsen; sons, Douglas Rolfsen of Clayborn County, Tenn., and Gary Rolfsen of Ludlow; a daughter, Carol Beutel of Erlanger; eight grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Linda Ruth Sneed, 43, of Newport, died Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Newport; daughters, Tyran Sneed, Georgia Sneed and Tamara Sneed, all of Newport; and three grandchildren.

Bessie L. Welch, 88, of Burlington, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

She was a homemaker and a member of James Temple Church of God in Christ, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her husband, Nolen Welch; sons, Myron Welch of Owenton, Nolan Allen Welch, Robert J. Welch and David Welch, all of Anchorage, Alaska, and Samuel Welch of Burlington; daughters, Pearlee Bloodsaw of Burlington, Mary Lou Connally of Newnan, Ga., Denise Williams of Burlington and Maria Wade of Florence; 26 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rufus B. West, 92, of Latonia, died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia.

He was a retired installer with Western Electric Co., and a member of Swanpond Baptist Church, Barbourville, and Telephone Pioneers of America. His wife, Nancy Marguerite West, died in 1989.

Survivors include sons, Larry C. West of Lakeside Park and Robert B. West of Crestview Hills; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Loray Williamson, 87, of Edgewood, died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

She was a retired teacher in Kenton County and a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Lakeside Park.

Survivors include her husband, Grover V. Williamson; a son, Joel V. Williamson of Chicago; and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Ashland.
