Howard Wurtenberger, helped needy

Former Crestview Hills Councilman Howard R. Wurtenberger was a successful banker who never forgot the people whose pockets were empty.

For 20 years, he and his wife, Joan Deye Wurtenberger, prepared meals once a month at the Parish Kitchen in Covington for the down and out.

"He did a lot of things that people didn't know about, " said a son, Ken Wurtenberger of Lakeside Park.

"He would drive cancer patients who didn't have transportation to their treatment.

"He would pick them up at their home and take them to various doctor and hospital appointments.

"If people needed help, he would drop everything to do it for them."

Howard Wurtenberger died Friday at his home. He was 73.

Mr. Wurtenberger was a native of Lexington, where he met his future wife, who was from Covington.

Shortly after the two married in 1952, they moved to Northern Kentucky.

Mr. Wurtenberger worked 40 years for Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati and was collections manager when he retired in 1990.

He served one term on city council in the mid-1970s.

His work with cancer patients stemmed from his membership in Road to Recovery, a support group connected with the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Wurtenberger also was a member of Summit Hills Country Club in Edgewood and Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell.

"He trusted in the Lord and went to church every day, " said Ken Wurtenberger.
