Clifford Hamilton had 'heart of gold' even during illness

It was no use trying to sneak past Clifford Hamilton if you had change in your pocket.

As soon as Mr. Hamilton heard the jingle of coins, he wanted to see if you had anything that might look good in his coin collection.

"If you came into our house and he could hear change, he would make you stop so he could buy the coins, " recalls his daughter Shawna R. Boemker of Florence.

Mr. Hamilton was a big-hearted man and a bit of a practical joker. He loved watching sports, sitting in the sun listening to a Reds game on the radio or spending time on the porch with his family.

"He loved Christmas. He liked the thrill of us opening presents -- how excited we were, that look on our faces. That was his favorite, " said Ms. Boemker.

He was diagnosed in 1979 with muscular dystrophy. Despite the long illness, he remained loving and selfless, his daughter said.

"All those years of being sick, if anybody in the family needed anything they could always go to him. The disease affects your muscles, and it might have affected his muscles, but it never affected his heart. He had a heart of gold, " Ms. Boemker said. "He always wanted to make sure everyone had what they wanted and had a happy life.

"He was the best father in the world. He was always there and you could always talk to him."

Mr. Hamilton had wanted to live to see his first grandchild. His grandson Brandon Neal is now 20 months old.
