Mary Alta Smith served school meals with smile

Mary Alta Smith of Butler served students hot lunches and seniors nutritious salads for more than 25 years - all with a smile.

Mrs. Smith was a retired cafeteria worker with the Pendleton County school system, where she cooked and served food at Northern Elementary School in Butler for a decade.

Before that, Mrs. Smith made salads for residents of the Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights for more than 15 years.

Mrs. Smith, a native of Batavia, Ohio, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was 74.

"She was an outgoing individual," said her son, Gerald Smith of Butler. "She was willing to help just about anybody who needed help."

When she had the time, her son said, Mrs. Smith loved to fish.

She also was a member of the First Baptist Church in Highland Heights.

Mrs. Smith and her husband, Bill Smith, were married 54 years.

Besides her husband and son, Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Joyce Neal of Fort Thomas; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home in Butler.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Butler Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association, 1636 Nicholasville Road, Suite 1, Lexington, Ky., 40503.

Edith Laverne Fischer, 85, of Latonia, died at 1:50 a.m. Thursday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia, its Legion of Mary and the former St. Helen's Society. Her husband, Ralph Joseph Fischer, died in 1972.

Survivors include a son, Ralph Timothy Fischer of Latonia; a daughter, Judith Ann Gants of Florence; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Jane Orrin Heile, 84, of Spanish Fort, Ala., formerly of Fort Mitchell, died Thursday at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.

Nicholas Alois Knasel, 95, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired salvage foreman with Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. His wife, Irma Yunker Knasel, died in 1986. A son, Paul M. Knasel, died in 1956.

Survivors include sons, Nicholas J. Knasel and Kenneth H. Knasel, both of Erlanger; a daughter, Irma E. Loffink of Kissimmee, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Christine E. Menefee, 96, of Morning View, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a retired employee of R. L. Polk Co., and a former Internal Revenue Service worker and teacher. Her husband, Orville Elliott Menefee, died on Aug. 5.

Survivors include daughters, JoAnn Chambers, Donna Williams and Carolyn Jenkins, all of Morning View; a son, Elbert Ray "Bud" Menefee of Morning View; a sister, Leona Gibson of Richwood; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Wilmington Baptist Church, 15472 Madison Pike, Morning View, Ky. 41063.

Gilbert "Jack" Neff, 69, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired switchman with Cincinnati Bell Telephone and an Air Force veteran. His wife, Alma Neff, died in 1999.

Survivors include his son, Kerry Neff of Fort Wright; a daughter, Dr. Judy Neff of Erlanger; brothers, Ron Neff of Villa Hills and Bill Neff of Latonia; sisters, Laverne Hildebrandt of Fort Thomas, Celine Green of Covington, Gerri Wienecke of Erlanger and Sharon Webster of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Private memorial services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to Animal Welfare of Northern Kentucky, P. O. Box 330, Independence, Ky. 41051. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

James Donald Renaker, 69, of Cincinnati, died Wednesday at his home. He was a retired electrician with Cincinnati Milacron and was a veteran of the Navy Reserves.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Leach Renaker; sons, William David Renaker and James Scott Renaker, both of Cincinnati; a daughter, Kathy Ann Phillips of Cincinnati; a sister, Helen Bolce of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Sarah Elizabeth Stoeckel, 99, of Ludlow, died Thursday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services will be at noon Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Kenton County Chapter.

Michelle "Shelly" Lynn Smith, 19, of Latonia, died Wednesday at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati. She was a student and member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church, Latonia.

Survivors include her parents, Leslie and Patti Smith of Latonia; and her fiance, George Hoffman of Independence.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2011 Madison Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45208. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Stanley A. Wentworth, 101, of Covington, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday at his home. He was a driver with Bonded Oil Co. and a retired die maker with King Records. He also was a 32nd degree Mason. His wife, Gertrude A. Wentworth, died in 1984.

Survivors include a son, Robert Wentworth of Indi ana; daughters, Betty Fletcher of Greenville, Ohio, and Marjorie Gatewood of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepdaughters, Chris Martin of Latonia and Margie L. Brown of Covington; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to charity of the donor's choice.
