Ludlow's Joann Dunn, balanced family, career

Joann Dunn of Ludlow worked hard for her family - inside and outside the home.

She worked 27 years in the corporate accounting department of Federated Department Stores in Cincinnati.

But Ms. Dunn also concerned herself with her family's emotional needs.

Years ago when her daughters were cheerleaders for Ludlow Youth Football, for instance, Ms. Dunn was their coach.

"My mom worked every day and she came home and helped my grandmother, who turned 85 yesterday," said one daughter, Paula Hartman of Ludlow.

"There was nothing she wouldn't give you, if she had it.

"She loved to shop, and she would buy stuff for everybody else."

Ms. Dunn, a lifelong resident of Ludlow, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was 59.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Ludlow.

Besides Mrs. Hartman, Ms. Dunn's survivors include a daughter, Donna Dunn of Ludlow; her mother, Adelaide Walls of Ludlow; a brother, Lee Walls of Hebron; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Ludlow.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home in Ludlow.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery in Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Ludlow Youth Football, in care of Larry Hartman, 524 Laurel St., Ludlow, Ky. 41016; or First Baptist Church, 400 Linden St., Ludlow, Ky. 41016.

Christine Jones Angell, 89, of Falmouth, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Patricia Alexander Barber, 70, of Williamstown, died at 4:40 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Grant County.

She was a retired employee of the Winn-Dixie Supermarket chain in Louisville.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gary E. Barber, in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Stephen E. Barber of Louisville; a daughter, Dorothy J. Golightly of Great Falls, Mont.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Columbus Cemetery, Owen County.

Memorials are suggested to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 222, Williamstown, Ky. 41097.

Paul Beck, 78, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a sales representative with Weisbach Electrical Sales Co., a member of the Bob White Club and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Beck; sons, Gary Beck of Cold Spring and Paul R. Beck Jr. of Jonesboro, Ga.; a daughter, Sherry Milleck of Fort Thomas; stepsisters, Rita Moore of Cincinnati and Mary Catherine Swartz of Fort Myers, Fla.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

George B. Boggs, 77, of Villa Hills, died Sunday at his home.

He was a retired employee of the L&N; and CSX railroads.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Boggs; a son, Lance Boggs of Elsmere; a daughter, Kim Scheper of Burlington; sisters, Jewel Crase of Cowan and Christine Roark of Linefork; brothers, Venson Boggs of Brookville, Ind., Bernard Boggs of Lexington, Frank Boggs of Clinton, Tenn., and Bennett Boggs of Fairfield, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn cemetery Chapel, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Margaret A. Conley, 56, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Grant County.

Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Earl G. Connett, 73, of Cold Spring, died at 2:45 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

He was a retired truck driver with Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include cousins.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Daisy Mae Cooper, 61, of Crittenden, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Grant County.

Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Thomas A. Deaton, 50, of Independence, died at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a self-employed musician.

Survivors include his wife, Leslie A. Haas Deaton; a son, Thomas A. Deaton III, at home; a daughter, Liane Hillner of Elsmere; his parents, Thomas A. and Betty Harrison Deaton of Florence; brothers, Timothy C. Deaton of Villa Hills and Tracy H. Deaton of Florence; a sister, Vikki L. Downing of Independence; and one grandchild.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Elizabeth P. Flannery, 88, of Fort Mitchell, died at 3:15 a.m. Monday at her home.

She was a medical secretary with Dr. Joseph Humpert's office in Lakeside Park. Her husband, James Flannery, died in 1970.

Survivors include a brother, Leslie "Doc" Powell of Barbourville; and sisters, Delia Stager of Mount Vernon, Ill., and Marjorie Alexander of New Port Richey, Fla.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Betty Jean Hacker, 71, of Corinth, died at 12:35 a.m. Monday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati.

Survivors include a sister, Dorris Smith of Middleport, Ohio; and a brother, Ernie Cracraft.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, is handling arrangements.

Buford E. "Boots" Howe, 84, of Montpelier, Ohio, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Saturday at Community Hospital, Montpelier.

He was the retired owner of Howe's Restaurant in Montpelier, a member of the board of National Bank of Montpelier and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Jackson Howe; sons, Gary Lee Howe of Toledo and Larry Howe of West Unity, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home, Montpelier. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Victoria Brown Huesman, 81, of Cincinnati, formerly of Crestview, died Monday at Riverview Nursing Home in Cincinnati.

She was a homemaker and a seamstress with Munsters Dry Cleaners.

Her first husband, George Brown, died in 1964. Her second husband, Howard Huesman, died in 1983.

Survivors include sons, George Brown of Hastings, Minn., Paul Brown of Cincinnati and William Brown of Covington; a daughter, Victoria Runyon of Dayton; 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Louise LaVelle Kells, 74, of Covington, died Sunday at her son's home in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

George Leduc "Lee" Kelsch, 41, of Pendleton County, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Arrangements are pending at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta.

Barbara A. Pelzer Kremer, 63, of Highland heights, died Monday at her home. She was a retired manager with Fifth Third Bank of Highland Heights.

Survivors include her husband, Wilfred J. Kremer; daughters, Katherine Pennington of Fort Thomas and Susan Rice of Florence; sons, Thomas J. Kremer of Loveland, Ohio, and Michael J. Kremer of Highland Heights; her mother, Anna Pelzer Fehr of Fort Thomas; sisters, Harriet Biehl of Sun City, Ariz., and Miriam Kroger of Melbourne; brothers, Harry Pelzer of Glendale, Ariz., and Vaughn Pelzer of Mesa, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cold Spring.

Coleman "Buck" Taylor Luster, 69, of Covington, died at 11:20 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired farmer, a member of Latonia Christian Church and an Army veteran.

Survivors include sons, Ray Luster of Covington, Glenn Luster of Taylor Mill and John Luster of Independence; daughters, Vivian Baxter of Erlanger, Alma Jones and Gail Perkins, both of Covington; a stepdaughter, Amy Cuck of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, Russell Luster of Erlanger and John Luster of Richmond; sisters, Mary Grice of Richmond and Laura Luster of Cincinnati; 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

William "Gary" G. Moore, 27, of Burlington, died Sunday at his home. He was a carpenter with Whitt Construction Co.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Moore; daughters, Mikaylee Moore of Fort Thomas, Cherie Fullwood and Grace Reiland, both of Burlington; his mother and stepfather, Connie and Sonny Rider of Glencoe; sisters, Terri Berger of Richwood and Tracy Hanser of Union; and grandmother, Gertrude Johnson of Glencoe.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati.

Mark J. Schultz Sr., 51, of Williamstown, died at 9:36 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a farmer, a retired employee of Castellini Co., Grant County and Cincinnati, and a self-employed truck driver.

He operated Tripple Ridge Produce and Greenhouse, Williamstown, was a member of St. William Church in Williamstown and a former member of the Grant County Fair Board.

He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Baynum Schultz; daughters, Rhonda Taylor of Aurora, Ind., and Chrissy Sowder of Williamstown; a son, Mark Schultz Jr. of Williamstown; his father and stepmother, Herb L. and Shirley Schultz of Melbourne; sisters, Mary Lou Straman of Fort Thomas, Joyce Studer and Patricia Mae Nelson, both of Melbourne, Kathleen Baxter and Brenda Baker, both of Alexandria; brothers, Edwin F. Schultz of California, Herbert P. Schultz of Melbourne, Lawrence Schultz of Cincinnati and Gerald E. Edna M. Shadoan, 72, of Ryland Heights, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a past president of Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post No. 325 in Campbell County and a member of Moose Lodge No. 1469.

Her husband, George Shadoan, died in 1997.

Survivors include daughters, Gayle W. Keefer of Lexington, Val Elkins of Newport, Karla Palmer of Walton, Dana Born of Taylor Mill, Doris Chisenhall of Latonia and Sherrie Shadoan of Ryland Heights; a brother, Robert Green of San Fernandina Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Anna Mae Weinel Sperry, 73, of Highland Heights, died at 4:08 a.m. Monday at her home.

She was a retired bookkeeper and a sales clerk with J.C. Penney, a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ in Fort Thomas, and a member of the church Women's Guild.

Her husband, Robert E. Sperry, died in 1998.

Survivors include sons, Ronald A. Sperry of Highland heights, Greg R. Sperry of Edgewood and Gary M. Sperry of Southgate; a sister, Emma Lou Baker of Alexandria; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Mary Ellen True, 81, of Corinth, died Sunday at her home. She was a former employee of McGregor Ball Factory, Williamstown, and a member of new Columbus Methodist Church, Corinth. Her husband, Donald True, died in 1985.

Survivors include a son, Johnny W. True of Corinth; daughters, Dona Mae Tatum of Corinth, Mary Frances Colston of Walton and Valerie Joy Mains of Cold Spring; sisters, Nellie Jenkins of Georgetown, Justine Neal and Velma Mason, both of Owenton; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Columbus Methodist Church, Corinth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth.

Burial will be in True Cemetery, Corinth.

Ralph Eugene Vessing Sr., 69, of Demossville, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired truck driver with Budig Western Trucking Co., a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 100 in Cincinnati and a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.

A daughter, Mary Elmore, died in 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie Mae Vessing; sons Ralph E. Vessing Jr. and Billy Duncan, both of Cincinnati, and Deborah McGaha of Petersburg; his mother, Florence McMillian of Cincinnati; a sister, Minnie Ann Howard of Cincinnati; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery.

Gertrude Brown Whyte, 90, of Maysville, died Wednesday at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus.

She was a teacher at Fee Elementary School in Mason County and was a retired employee of Merz Brothers Department Store.

Her husband, Oliver Wendell Whyte Sr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Dr. Olivia Marie Whyte Thomas of Columbus and Pattye Sue Whyte Richardson of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Oliver Wendell Whyte Jr. of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services were Sunday at Scott United Methodist Church, Maysville. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery, Maysville. Knox and Brothers Funeral Home, Maysville, handled arrangements.
