Edgar Watson, a busy man

Edgar Clinton Watson redefined the art of living life to the very fullest. The Walton farmer held down a full-time foreman's job, raised livestock and tobacco, operated a sports club, and reared five children with his wife of 59 years, Mildred.

"He only slept about four hours a night," said daughter, Sylvia Siffel. "He would work the night shift in town until 4 in the morning. Then, he would come home and sleep from 4 to 8 a.m., and wake up in time to get the rest of us up."

Mr. Watson, 75, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

From 1957 to 1983, Mr. Watson and his family operated the Barrel Lake Fishing and Gun Club on their Walton farm. The Boone County hot spot was named after a bar and grill which floated on empty barrels in the three-acre pay fishing lake.

Soon Mr. Watson added a trapshooting range, which Ms. Siffel and one of her sisters managed. In fact, both were state trapshooting champions in 1977.

"There was always something going on, that's for sure," said Ms. Siffel. "But really these were just things he enjoyed doing, so he created this in his own backyard, so he could do it with everybody close to him."

Mr. Watson worked to keep his family close to him, even as they grew and left home. Ms. Siffel said her parents, her 96-year-old paternal grandmother, two sisters and she all have homes on the same Walton street.

Mr. Watson was a retired foreman and machinist at Avey's Machine Tool Co., a former machinist with Lodge and Shipley Co., and an orderly at the old General Hospital. He farmed livestock and tobacco.

He was a member of New Salem Baptist Church in Lincoln County and a Navy veteran of World War II.

"We all said if we could just do half of what he did, we could accomplish a lot in our lives," said Ms. Siffel.
