Florence's Dr. Lee C. Hess, dedicated family physician

Northern Kentucky has lost a prominent member of the medical profession.

Dr. Lee C. Hess, a family physician who practiced in Florence for 35 years, died Saturday at his home in Florence. He was 70.

Dr. Hess came to Florence in 1947 and began his practice in 1957 after graduating from Xavier University and the University of Louisville. He served his internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Dr. Hess retired in 1993.

Dr. Robert Hemmer, a fellow Florence physician and long-time friend, said Dr. Hess was extremely dedicated to his practice and used good judgment in seeking out solutions to his patients' problems.

He had served as president of the Kentucky Medical Association in the early 1970s. He was a charter member of the Northern Kentucky Health and Welfare Planning Council and was a member of the Region Seven Mental Retardation Board.

He also was chairman of the Boone County Board of Health in the late 1970s and 1980s and served as president of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce in the late 1970s.

Hemmer said Dr. Hess was politically active and knowledgeable, describing him as "an observer and critic of both parties."

Between 1964 and 1980, he worked in the campaigns of conservatives in presidential campaigns and was particularly fond of leaders in the Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan mold. He was an alternate to the Republican National Convention in 1976 and a delegate to the GOP convention four years later.

Personally, Dr. Hess was "affable, very likable," Hemmer said.

The two physicians were part of group of seven doctors who played poker once a month. Dr. Hess was "not a big winner, but a big contributor," Hemmer said with a laugh.

Dr. Hess enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf and played Santa Claus for many years at the Fort Mitchell Country Club Christmas party for many years.

Dr. Hess was a member of St. Paul Church in Florence and a member of Triple Crown Country Club.
