Edith Heil, devoted to family, church

Edith Mary Engelman Heil took joy in life and was especially proud of her children, all 13 of them.

Her youngest son, Joe Heil of Cold Spring, said his mother was very devoted to her family and her church.

"She would say the rosary on a daily basis," he said.

Mrs. Heil also enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "She took great joy in seeing them," he said.

Mrs. Heil, formerly of Newport and Erlanger, died at 9:12 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was 80.

She was a homemaker and a former member of St. Vincent De Paul Church in Newport and St. Henry Church, Erlanger. She also was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Church Altar Society and Hilltoppers, the Tri-City Seniors of Crescent Springs and the Golden Girls.

Her husband, Wilbert P. Heil, died in 1987.

Survivors include daughters, Judy Zilliox of Florence, Kathy Metzger of Erlanger, Mary Kremer of Camp Springs, Patty Drees of Villa Hills, Sandy Heil of Independence and Suzanne Heil of Highland Heights; sons, Lawrence Heil of Park Hills, Ken Heil of Fort Mitchell, Gary Heil of Crestview Hills, Tim Heil of Newport, Rick Heil of Kettering, Ohio, Robert Heil of Fort Thomas; brothers, Walter Engelman of Highland Heights and Joseph Engelman of Taylor Mill; 35 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or the charity of the donor's choice.

Joseph T. Blades, 32, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at his home. He was a volunteer with Parish Kitchen and a martial arts instructor.

Survivors include his parents, Helena and Thurman Blades of Erlanger; sisters, Dr. Mary Blades and Anne Marie Mangold, both of Cincinnati; and a brother, Tom Blades of Covington.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Barbara Church, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, to the attention of Nora Kelly, 3400 Vine St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45220; or National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association, 726 N. Franklin St., Suite 501, Chicago, Ill. 60610.

Bertha Moreland Bratton, 97, of Latonia, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Latonia. She was a Sunday school teacher at the church and a member of the church choir. Her husband, Hamilton W. Bratton, died in 1983. A son, Mel Bratton, died in 1990.

Survivors include daughters, Theda Bratton Wilson of Cold Spring and Nancy Bratton Perry of Crestview Hills; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Fosters Chapel Cemetery, Mount Olivet. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or Fosters Chapel Memorial Fund, Mount Olivet, Ky. 41064.

Alexis Callen, 5, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Melvin L. Carson, 31, of Grants Lick, died Tuesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati, of injuries suffered in an auto accident. He was an employee of Tire Warehouse, Cincinnati.

Survivors include a son, Andrew Carson of Columbia, S.C.; daughters, Ashley Carson and Angel Carson, both of Columbia; his mother, Bessie Carson of Grants Lick; and a sister, Cindy L. Polley of Grants Lick.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Erwin J. Dewald, 98, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at Mercy Franciscan West Park, Cincinnati. He was a bookkeeper with French Bauer, Cincinnati, and a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere. His wife, Loretta Fenbers Dewald, died in 1992.

Survivors include a a son, Erwin W. Dewald of Villa Hills; daughters, Rita Galle of Cincinnati and Joyce Smyth of Okeana, Ohio; a sister, Florence DeWald of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Henry Church. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Franklin R. Hartley Sr., 72, of Independence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Cora V. Higgins, 90, of Highland Heights, died Wednesday at Lakeside Health Care Center in Highland Heights. Her husband, Willie Higgins, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mary Clifford of Hebron.

No services are planned. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Mary Louise Lehew, 90, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday at Ridge Pavilion, Cincinnati. She was a saleswoman with Avon cosmetics and a member of Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include sons, Thomas Lehew of Falmouth and Charles Lehew of Norwood, Ohio; a daughter, Francis Eversol of Falmouth; a stepdaughter, Gloria Shea of Villa Hills; stepsons, Glen Lehew of Halifax, Va., Ike Lehew of Covington and Ed Lehew of Fort Thomas; a sister, Catherine Wence of Shreveport, La.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen-Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, followed by prayers. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Emma "Jerry" Manser, 89, of Bellevue, died Wednesday at her home. She was a sales clerk with Pogue's department store, Cincinnati. Her husband, Brooks Manser, died in 1979. A son, Alan Manser, died in 1996. A daughter, Marjorie Ann Manser, died in 1990.

Survivors include four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075; or Bellevue High School, Center and Lafayette Sts., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.

Charles Perkey, 59, of Cincinnati, died at 12:59 a.m. today at the Glencare Nursing Home in Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Elmer Edward Tanner, 79, of Florence, died Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center. He was a sheet-metal worker with Tanner Erection Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Union Baptist Church. He also was a member of Ohio Valley Harness Racing Association, Boone-Union Masonic Lodge No. 304 F&AM and Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No. 24, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Tanner; sons, Phil Tanner of Erlanger and Rick Tanner of Florence; a stepson, Milton Doan of Hardinsburg, Ind.; stepdaughters, Wanda Lamping of Bradenton, Fla., Mary Myers of Hardinsburg and Sharon Emerson of Walton; a brother, Buddy Tanner of Florence; a sister, Bernice Meeker of Fort Wright; 18 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Irene Elizabeth Thornton, 91, of Cincinnati, formerly of Pendleton County, died June 14 at her home. She was a retired legal secretary and a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church in Cincinnati.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.

Paul A. Thornton, 74, of Lexington, formerly of Campbell County, died Friday in Lexington. He was a physics and biophysics professor at the University of Kentucky, and a retired chairman of the school's Department of Clinical Nutrition. He also was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Betty "B.J." Thornton; sons, Michael P. Thornton of Boston and Stephen D. Thornton of Lexington; stepdaughters, Linda Miller and Becky Burkley, both of Lexington; a stepson, Lloyd Young of Lexington; four grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday at Milward Southland Mortuary, Lexington. Burial was in Lexington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, Ky. 40504; or the charity of the donor's choice.

James Young, 70, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler.
