Charles Baker, helped people

Charles M. Baker was born and raised on the family farm in Verona, where he lear ned to be compassionate, patient, hard-working and loyal.

"He was the kindest, most compassionate, generous man," said Mr. Baker's wife of 27 years, Helen Cuzick Baker.

Mr. Baker, 79, of Verona, died at 7:01 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

He was a dairy and tobacco farmer and a member of Zion Baptist Church in Walton. He also attended South Fork Christian Church in Verona.

The family has about 300 acres off U.S. 42, and through the years Mr. Baker helped people whose cars stalled near his farmhouse, his wife recalled.

"If someone was walking up the road and needed money for gas, he would give them money," Mrs. Baker said.

"One time, a girl's car stopped, and he took her to Verona Chevron and told them to fill her tank - and he paid for it."

Mr. Baker didn't have any hobbies other than his work, she said.

He enjoyed being on his farm and with his family and friends, his wife said.

"Farming was his livelihood," Mrs. Baker said.

"People would ask when he was going to retire, and he said, 'When the good Lord takes me.' "

Besides his wife, survivors include a brother, James M. Baker of Verona.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Baker Family Cemetery, Walton.

Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army, 340 W. 10th St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Margaret A. Ryan, inspired generations of her family

Margaret A. Ryan was an inspiration to several generations of an Irish clan that settled in the United States at the turn of the last century.

Miss Ryan's family moved to the Maysville area when she was a young girl. She would tell her many nieces and nephews stories about her youth, when she had to take a horse or buckboard to work at a dry-goods store.

"She would say, 'If you think getting to work is hard these days, try riding in a buckboard,' " said a nephew, James Ryan of Crescent Springs.

"She didn't smoke or drink. She just lead a very good life."

Miss Ryan, 99, of Crescent Springs, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a retired operator for Western Union and a member of St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs.

Miss Ryan was always willing to help her family emotionally and financially, Ryan said.

She willingly shared the wisdom she had accumulated over the years and became the backbone of the family, Ryan said.

"She was just one special lady," Ryan said. "You would have had to meet her to understand."

Besides her nephew, other survivors include nieces, Sister Kathleen Ryan, O.S.B., and Nancy Ryan, both of Villa Hills, Patricia DiRocco of Crescent Springs, Mary Ellen Funke of St. Louis, Eileen Preston of Danville and Barbara Agee of Crestview Hills; nephews, Elmer Purvis, Jim Purvis and Bob Purvis, all of Akron, Ohio; five great-nephews, five great-nieces, two great-great-nephews and one great-great-niece.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Monday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until time of services Monday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to charity of donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Nancy Bresser, 29, of Florence, died Friday at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Brett Bresser; her parents, Dick and Lois Lambers of Union; and sisters, Donna Lambers-Sutkamp and Jean Bode, both of Cincinnati, Lisa Mason of Park Hills and Laura Elder of Louisville.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Timothy Church, Union. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Nancy Bresser Fund, c/o Heritage Bank, 1818 Florence Pike, Burlington, Ky. 41005.

Michaela Maralyn Caracciolo, was stillborn Wednesday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.

Survivors include her parents, Don Caracciolo and Stephanie Gilman Caracciolo of Alexandria; a sister, Laura Caracciolo of Alexandria; and grandparents, John and Jeanne Gilman of Sussex, Wis., Carmine V. Caracciolo of Ridgefield, Conn., and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stumvoll of Boynton Beach, Fla.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

John William Fields, 73, of Dry Ridge, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired truck driver and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Walton Baptist Church and Local Teamsters No. 100. A son, John James Fields, died in 1980.

Survivors include his wife, Lula Belle Johns Fields; daughters, Nancy Hutchison of Williamstown, Linda S. Penick and Lois Cain, both of Dry Ridge, and Debbie Mulford of Piner; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Clinton Harvey Gardiner, 86, of Dade City, Fla., formerly of Newport, died Wednesday at Pasco Community Hospital in Dade City. He was a retired college history professor and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Katie Mae Gardiner; a son, Harvey Nelson Gardiner of Boulder, Colo.; and a sister, Roberta Cerul of Sudbury, Mass.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. Kelly Memorial Funeral Home, Zephyrhills, Fla., is handling arrangements.

Edith Ledford, 61, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at the Harrison County home of her daughter, Wanda Pergram. She was a homemaker and a member of Salt Gum Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons, James Ledford, Zendal Ledford, Wesley Ledford and Jerry Ledford, all of Harrison County; daughters, Wanda Pergram, Barbara Adkins and Donna Knipp, all of Harrison County; brothers, Walter Smith of Ohio and Bazel Smith of Knox County; sisters, Marlene Phillips of Corbin, Sue Brown, Verna Hammons and Joyce Mills of Knox County, Mona Ellen Duncil of Bakersfield, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, with visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Herschel Purdy Ligon, 86, of Sanders, died Thursday at Owenton Manor. He was retired from the Kentucky highway department and a member of Sanders Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Bibb Ligon; a daughter, Lois Jensen of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; a sister, Minnie Lee Murphy of Louisville; a brother, Sollie Ligon of Carrollton; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sanders Baptist Church. Visitation will be from from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton, and from 1 p.m. until time of services Monday at the church. Burial will be in Dallasburg Masonic Cemetery, Wheatley.

Alice Carole Moore, 55, of Latonia, died Friday at her home. Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Lorna June Sandlin, 70, of Burlington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a former telephone operator supervisor and a member of Laurel River Missionary Baptist Church in Laurel County.

Survivors include her husband, Dallas Sandlin; a son, Jack Banks of Burlington; sisters, Helen Miller of Columbus, Ind., and Carol Meeker of Galion, Ohio; a stepbrother, H.C. Miracle Jr. of Wetumpka, Ala.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 6 to 8 tonight.

LaVerne Rector Stephens, 85, of Florence, died at 4:24 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a retired cook and a member of Belleview Baptist Church. A son, Irvin Wayne Rector, died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, William Rector of Independence; daughters, Sheryl Oliver and Margie Meikle, both of Florence, and Ella Rose Bobb of Dry Ridge; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Belleview Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke Hospice, 85 N. Grand Ave., Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Kenneth H. Wynn, 80, of Crittenden, died Thursday at Owenton Manor. Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden.
