Audra Abney, longtime Newport grocer, minister

After Audra Reese "A. R." Abney sold his Newport grocery nine years ago, he did something he'd wanted to do for a long time: become a Nazarene minister.

Mr. Abney, who owned Abney's Market at 10th and York streets for more than 40 years, enrolled in a Cincinnati theological institute, God's Bible School.

Once he earned his minister's license, he served at Nazarene churches throughout Northern Kentucky when their regular minister could not serve.

"He was always very religious," said a son, Mark Abney of Morrow, Ohio.

"I guess it was just something he had always wanted to do but never really had the time to go to school and get his license."

Mr. Abney, a Newport resident, died Monday at the Loveland Health Care Center in Cincinnati. He was 74.

Mr. Abney was a native of Clay City and an Army veteran of World War II. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Erlanger Church of the Nazarene.

"He was very sensitive and loved helping people," his son said.

A.R. Abney's wife, Betty Snyder Abney, preceded him in death in 1974.

Besides Mark Abney, survivors include sons, Aaron Abney of Louisville, David Abney of Butler, Paul Abney of Erlanger and Thomas Abney of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Farrell Abney of Ohio; a sister, Marceline Furnish of Batavia, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Radel Funeral Home, Newport.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.

Charles David Atkins II, 15, of Morning View, died Sunday of natural causes at his father's home in Ludlow. He was a freshman at Simon Kenton High School.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Charles D. and Terri M. Atkins of Ludlow; his mother and stepfather, Bonnie Baker Atkins and Ronald Del Gaylor of Morning View; a sis ter, Melinda Atkins of Morning View; stepbrothers, Jeremy Wartman and Larry Wartman, both of Ludlow, and Ronald Gaylor II of Florence; a stepsister, Delmetra Lauderman of Florence; and grandparents, Martha Atkins of Wilder, Betty Brock of Ludlow, Wayne and Doris Vastine of Covington, and Juanita Gaylor of Morning View.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Epilepsy Council of Greater Cincinnati, 895 Central Parkway Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.

Earl Vincent Baker, 85, of Crestview Hills, died at 12:05 p.m. Sunday at

his home. He was a retired punch press operator with General Electric Co. in Cincinnati and a member of Senior Citizens Bowling League at Bellewood Lanes, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Sonntag Baker; a daughter, Barbara Ann Young of Columbia, Mo.; a son, Lawrence Baker of Edgewood; sisters, Loretta Bleichner of Southgate and Virginia Rachford of Bellevue; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Madonna House of Northern Kentucky, 25 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017; or to St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1803 N. Fort Thomas Ave., Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Charles Junior Bush, of Newport, died Monday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a retired lead person with Aristech Acrylics and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include daughters, Caroline Penrod and June Jones, both of Alexandria, Amie Broughton of Sardinia, Ohio, and Cindy Franda of Las Vegas; sons, Charles Patterson, Robert Bush, James Bush, Jeff Bush and Joe Bush, all of Alexandria; a sister, Margaret Hayward of Cincinnati; and 17 grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Grants Lick Cemetery.

Minnie Bicksel Eisenmenger, 90, of Erlanger, died Monday at Village Care Center in Erlanger. She was a medical assistant in Louisville. Her husband, Oliver J. Eisenmenger, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Gilbert J. Eisenmenger of Crestview Hills; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bosse Funeral Home, Louisville. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Louisville. Memorials are suggested to Cerebral Palsy School, 1520 Baxter Ave., Louisville, Ky. 40205.

Paul John Gohman, 73, of Florence, died at 4:50 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired pipefitter and

installer with B&B; Heating and Air Conditioning Co., Covington, and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence. He was a member of the church Coffee and Donut Committee, a former member of Florence Lions Club and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Moeller Gohman; sons, Don Gohman of Dry Ridge, Chris Gohman of Elizabethtown and Paul A. Gohman of Florence; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:10 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2011 Madison Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45208; or Ruth Lyons Children's Christmas Fund, P. O. Box 59, Cincinnati, Ohio 45201.

Anita D. Grogg, 61, of Covington, died Sunday at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Robert Hammersmith, 86, of Warsaw, died Monday at Gallatin Health Care Center in Warsaw.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton.

Helen Stenger Herms, 97, of Dayton, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired manager of Rosenthal Furriers and a member of St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Her husband, Charles J. Herms, died in 1970.

Survivors include daughters, Ramona Burkart of Fort Thomas, Janet Herms, Carol Lynn and Ruth Poos, of all Dayton, and Rita Watka of Walton; sons, Larry Herms of Dayton and Tom Herms of Cincinnati; 30 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Bernard Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Bernard Church, Fifth and Berry, Dayton, Ky. 41074.

LaVerne Emma Hornbeck, 70, of Verona, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was an employee of Litton Industries Automation Systems.

Survivors include sons, David Hornbeck of Verona and Jeffrey Hornbeck of Erlanger; sisters, Melva Brown, Laura Secrest and Evelyn Wolke, all of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Mark Edward Kaiser, 50, of Covington, died at 1 p.m. Sunday at St.

Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was an ink man with Equitable Bag Co. in Covington and Florence.

Survivors include his parents, Herman H. and Virginia Rose Reed Kaiser; brothers, David L. Kaiser of Florence and Paul Douglas Kaiser of Park Hills; and a sister, Esther Mae Miles of Newport.

Services will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Cincinnati Association for the Blind, 2045 Gilbert Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45206.

Mary Metcalf, 101, of Erlanger, died Sunday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Margaret E. Pink, 91, of Fort Wright, died at 12:40 a.m. Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, George S. Pink; nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial was this morning at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Burial was in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, handled arrangements.

Jerry E. White, 47, of Alexandria, died at 1:55 p.m. Monday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. He had been disabled since he was hit by a car when he was 13 years old.

Survivors include his mother, Christine White of Alexandria; and brothers, John White and Jeff White, both of Alexandria.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria. Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Place Nursing Home, 3510 Alexandria Pike, Highland Heights, Ky. 41076.

Dorothy A. Wilson, 91, of Latonia, died at 11:05 a.m. Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. She was a member of the church Young At Heart Club. Her husband, Virgil Lee Wilson, died in 1979. Sons, Kenneth Wilson and Paul Wilson, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Ova Lee Wilson of Cincinnati and Ralph Wilson of Taylor Mill; daughters, Joyce Morgan of Fort Thomas and Jan Dixon of Reading, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 8 tonight at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Burial will be at noon Wednesday at Corinth Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Sydney Grace Wilson, daughter of Brian and Jodie L. Gordon Wilson of Florence, was stillborn at 10:20 a.m. Sunday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

Other survivors include a half-sister, Erica Fannin, at home; grandparents, Jimmy Wilson of Glencoe, Richard and Betty Gordon of Florence; and great-grandmother, Mary Louise Stone of Williamstown.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at IOOF Cemetery, Napoleon. Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona, is handling arrangements.

Mildred R. Wimmers, 78, of Fort Wright, died Monday at St. Charles Care Center. She worked for an insurance company.

Survivors include sisters, Sister Judith Ann Wimmers of Oldenburg, Ind., and Barbara Bosse of Cincinnati; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Buri al will be in St. Stephen Ceme tery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Charles Care Center, 500 Farrell Drive, Cov ington 41011. Middendorf-Bull ock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
