Sister Mary Kastner, one of four founders of Erlanger monastery

Sister Mary Kastner, C.P., a contemplative passionist nun, was one of four found ers of Erlanger's Monastery of the Sacred Passion in 1947.

For three years, the founders lived in a farm house until the monastery was completed in 1951, said Sister Mother Margaret Mary Fields.

Sister Kastner had entered the convent in Pittsburgh 71 years ago. During her years at the monastery, she served as novice directress and superior.

Sister Kastner, 97, of Erlanger, died at 2:15 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. Sister Kastner lived what Sister Mother Fields described as "a very hidden life, a life of prayer."

"Our life is a life of prayer and supplication for the church and the needs of the world," the sister mother said.

Nonetheless, Sister Kastner was known for her embroidery and was an excellent seamstress, Sister Mother Fields said.

"She was a very active person, very alert," Sister Mother Fields said.

"She kept up with her sewing up until about two weeks before she died," Sister Mother Fields said.

Sister Kastner is survived by four nieces.

Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Passionist Chapel, Erlanger.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the chapel.

Burial will be in Passionist Cemetery, Erlanger.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Geraldine Adkins, 72, of Erlanger, died early today at her residence.

Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Joan Harsley Bell, 62, of Independence, died at 12:44 p.m. Sunday at Brandon Regional Hospital in Brandon, Fla. She was a sales agent with Progressive Insurance Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include a son, Scott Wallin of Tampa, Fla.; daughters, Dauneen Bell of Ludlow and Donzetta Laietta of Brandon; her mother, Mary Elizabeth Harsley of Brandon; a brother, Richard Harsley of Tampa; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Entombment will be in Highland Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Henry Lee Moffet Cancer Center, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, Fla. 33612.

Elbern F. Bowling, 79, of Verona, died at 3:10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired machine mechanic with Duro Bag Co. and a member of Freewill Baptist Church, Kenton County. He was an Army veteran. His wife, Lila Bowling, died in 1985.

Survivors include sons, Gary Wayne Bowling of Verona and Douglas Bowling of Morning View; a daughter, Beverly Riley of Gays Creek; brothers, Marshall Bowling of Booneville, Jackie Bowling of Williamstown, David Bowling of Middletown, Ohio, and Vernice Bowling of Covington; sisters, Millie Turner of Booneville, Thelma Oaks of Scottsburg, Ind., and Betty Wilson of Covington; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Wilmington Cemetery, Fiskburg.

Clifford H. Coby, 87, of Louisville, formerly of Covington, died Monday in Louisville. He was a retired terminal manager with Ashland Oil Co., a member of Holy Trinity Church in Louisville, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret A. Meiners Coby; sons, J. Patrick Coby and Michael William Coby; daughters, Sandra Byrd and Debra Weber; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Ratterman Funeral Home, Louisville. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park, Louisville. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042; or American Diabetes Association, 721 W. Main St., Louisville, Ky. 40202.

Evelyn Mae Lennex Francis, 62, of Maysville, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Temple, Maysville.

Survivors include her husband, Anthony W. Francis; daughters, Elizabeth Hopkins and Cheryl Naegele, both of Maysville, and Marie Naegele of Port St. Joe, Fla.; a stepson, Anthony W. Francis II; stepdaughters, Margarita Mae Francis, Lora Aileen Francis, Katheryn Nicene Francis and Helena Michelle Francis; sisters, Patricia Fox of Brooksville, Betty Hilton of South Boston, Va., Paulette Henderson of Maysville and Paula Sue Mitchell of Ripley, Ohio; and several grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Temple. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Temple. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.

Walter Joseph "Lefty" Goodall Jr., 77, of Alexandria, died March 12 at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Bellevue, and a member of Main Street Baptist Church, Alexandria. He was a former minor league baseball pitcher and scout for the St. Louis Cardinals organization, and coached the Acme Steel baseball team in Wilder from 1963-67. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Riddle Goodall; daughters, Mary Whitford of Alexandria, Sue Even of Finneytown, Ohio, and Renee Thompson of Independence; and a sister, Ruth Flammer of Detroit.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45103; or American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042. Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights, is handling arrangements.

Alfred G. Griffith, 84, of Independence, died at 2:27 p.m. Sunday at his residence. He was an automobile body repairman for the Menninger Auto Body Shop, Covington, a member of Latonia VFW Post No. 201 and a World War II veteran. His wife, Mae Florence Ackman, died in 1988.

Survivors include sons, Dennis and Clyde Griffith of Burlington and Philip Griffith of Independence; daughters, Carolyn Mullikin of Dry Ridge and Sandra Benton of Elsmere; sisters, Hazel Ellis of Covington and Dorothy Martin of Erlanger; 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Harold J. Hoffman, 94, of Independence, died at 2:20 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired laborer in the Research Design Corp., Warren, Mich. His wife, Diona Hoffman; a son, Howard Hoffman; and stepdaughter, Regina Buck, all preceded him in death.

Survivors include a brother, William Harry Hoffman of Toledo, Ohio; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at East Swanton Cemetery, Swanton, Ohio. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Marjorie F. Mains, 72, of Largo, Fla., formerly of Silver Grove, died Saturday at her home. She was an employee of St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas and a member of First Baptist Church, Silver Grove.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Mains; sons, Harold C. Young of Hudson, Fla., James W. Young of Alexandria and Randall B. Young of Falmouth; a daughter, Brenda Mains Howard of Pottstown, Pa.; a brother, Conley Barrett of Alexandria; sisters, Flocey MacDonald and Lena Geary, both of Newport, Nora McKean of Florence, Dorthy Comer of Covington, Effie Marie Cottam of Veyo, Utah, and June Edinger of Daytona, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Moss Feaster Funeral Home, Clearwater, Fla., is handling arrangements.

Hilda R. Mauntel, 96, of Villa Hills, died at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at St. Charles Care Center, Fort Wright. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert B. Mauntel, died in 1989.

Survivors include daughters, Janet Rice of Erlanger, Joan Thomson of Niceville, Fla., and Suzanne Mauntel of Villa Hills.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Charles Care Center, 500 Farrell Drive, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011; or Campbell Lodge Boys Home, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076.

Charles Edward Minton, 78, of Covington, died Sunday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired electrician and a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was a member of the Community Pentecostal Church, and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Stapleton Minton; a daughter, Glenda Gabbard of Hebron; a son, Charles Edward Minton Jr. of Covington; brothers, Carl Minton of Oxford, Ohio, Leo Minton of Morristown, Tenn., Phillip Minton of Pennington Gap., Va., and Tom Minton of Tazewell, Tenn.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Community Pentecostal Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Community Pentecostal Church Building Fund, 11875 Taylor Mill Road, Independence, Ky. 41051. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, is handling arrangements.

Victoria K. Kozee Snodgrass, 82, of Park Hills, died Saturday at Burlington House Care Center, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Crescent Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Judith S. Daniels of Cincinnati; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Joseph A. Torrey, 64, of Bellevue, died Saturday at his residence. He was a retired tester for General Electric, Cincinnati, and a member of St. Bernard Church, Dayton. His wife, Ellen Joy Torrey, died in 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Torrey of Cincinnati; sisters, Dorothy "Sis" Schweigert of Southgate and Mary Claire Torrey of Miami; brothers, John Torrey of Dayton and Raymond Torrey of Charlottesville, Va.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Withamsville, Ohio.

Sharon Lee Wane, 50, of Apopka, Fla., formerly of Covington, died March 3 in Apopka. She was a carpenter, the first female union carpenter in Cincinnati, and was active in Habitat for Humanity.

Survivors include her husband, Hal Wane; sons, Wayne Werrmann of Crestview and Casey Werrmann of Alexandria; a stepson, Harold T. Wane II of Covington.; her parents, Ed and Mary Lou Kruse of Southgate; a sister, Sue Patton of Alexandria; a grandmother, Florence H. Reekers of Southgate; and six grandchildren.

Services were March 7 at Baldwin-Fairchild Semoran Funeral Home, Forest City, Fla.
