Mrs. Newton, UK AD's wife, 'own woman'

LEXINGTON - The wife of University of Kentucky athletics director C.M. Newton died after a long battle with leukemia.

Evelyn Newton was 70. She died Thursday afternoon at the University of Kentucky Medical Center with her husband and family members at her bedside.

"She was her own woman," said Larry Ivy, named to succeed C.M. Newton, who will retire this summer. "When you think of all the accomplishments and attention that Coach Newton had, she was there but she always did her own thing and was a very strong person."

Evelyn Newton had served on the board of Chrysalis House alcohol/drug abuse treatment facility and was an elder at First Presbyterian Church.

USDA's Robert Bass, devoted to family

Robert E. Bass, a retired meat inspector with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, died on March 10 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood. He was 69.

Mr. Bass was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and a lifelong sports enthusiast. As a young man he played football, basketball and wrestled. In later years, he won trophies bowling at Heid's Bowling Lanes in Cincinnati.

Mr. Bass was a butcher with Meyer Meat in the 1950s, and became a USDA meat inspector in 1958. It was while he was inspecting the Kahn's plant that he met Dolores Durr, whom he married in 1974.

"The government is all business, but there was always that little twinkle in his eye," Mrs. Bass said. "The inspectors weren't supposed to talk with the people who worked there, but he started throwing little wads of paper at me with notes on them."

They eventually married and moved to Burlington.

Both had been married before. She had two sons and two daughters. He had four sons. "We made one big family," Mrs. Bass said.

"He was a wonderful husband and a wonderful father. He was a tease and he was a little mischievous," she said. 'The children loved him."

He retired in 1988 and filled his days with woodworking projects, bowling, sports and family.

"He loved the children and all the grandchildren," his wife said.

He became his grandchildren's greatest fan, attending their sports events.
