Joseph Russell, staunch Baptist, carpenter, was Normandy veteran

Joseph O. Russell of Covington completely changed his life in 1961, says his brother, Bennie Russell of Butler.

"Before he was saved, he was about the meanest man, but he changed completely," Bennie Russell said.

"Once he repented, he quit smoking, he quit drinking and he quit gambling."

Joseph Russell joined Faith Baptist Church in Latonia, where he served as a trustee and general board member.

"He was very faithful to his church," said Bennie Russell.

Joseph Russell died Sunday afternoon at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fort Thomas. He was 77.

Mr. Russell born in Pendleton County - one of nine children - and worked on a farm as a boy.

An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Russell was a radio operator for Gen. George Patton and participated in the invasion of Normandy with his father, Oscar Russell Sr., who died in 1973. Mr. Russell then worked as a carpenter at General Electric in Cincinnati, and with a relative who was a contractor.

Mr. Russell eventually started his own carpentry business. He also loved to hunt and fish.

His wife, Ruby Groves Russell, died in 1989.

Besides his brother, survivors include a sister, Mildred Warner of Covington.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Faith Baptist Church in Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 tonight at Allison and Rose Funeral Home in Taylor Mill and after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery in Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to Faith Baptist Church, 218 W. 33rd St., Covington, Ky., 41015.

Marjorie Bert Aldridge, 74, of Latonia, died at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, John Aldridge Sr.; daughters, Tinna Shariene Berger of Latonia, Nian Frances Hogan of Crittenden and Margie Henry of Walton; sons, John Allen Aldridge Jr. of Bellevue, Montie Kay Aldridge of Collingsville, W.Va., Andy Gene Aldridge and Rocky Lee Aldridge, both of Newport, Billy Joe Aldridge of Taylor Mill and Roy Leonard Aldridge of Finneytown, Ohio; a brother, Joseph Chambers of Mason, Ohio; sisters, Shirley Clark and Madeline Childers, both of Richmond, Anna Jean Tipton of Dry Ridge, Ellie Mayes and Laura Williams, both of Winchester; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Thursday. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke Hospital East Hospice, 85 N. Grand Ave., Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Irene Cable, 75, of Florence, died at 8:55 p.m. Monday at Woodspoint Care Center in Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Flossie W. Davis, 90, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 8:15 a.m. Sunday at Mount Washington Care Center, Cincinnati. She was a retired waitress with Hathaway Restaurant Co., downtown Cincinnati, and a member of First Baptist Church of Covington.

Survivors include a daughter, Sydney Terrell of Fort Wright; a brother, Hersel Correll of Indianapolis; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Herman Gillespie, 86, of Falmouth, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Janet Hagedorn, 90, of Kenton Hills, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker, a member of Mother of God Church, Covington, and a founding member of the St. Charles Auxiliary. Her husband, William C. Hagedorn, died in 1962.

Survivors include sons, William E. Hagedorn of Kenton Hills and Andrew Hagedorn of Kansas City.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Thursday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Ceil Hennessey, 92, of Augusta, died Monday at Western Hills Retirement Center, Cincinnati. She was a retired executive secretary of Brotherhood of Maintenance of Ways railroad union.

Survivors include sisters, Florence Hennessey and Edith Waldeck, both of Cincinnati, and Esther Williams of Los Angeles. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Augustine Church, Augusta. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Metcalfe-Hennseey Funeral Home, Augusta. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Augusta. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Frances Bolden Higgins, 80, of Mays Lick, died at 4 a.m. Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, Mays Lick. Her husband, Samuel T. Higgins, died in 1976. Two sons also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Samuel T. Higgins Jr. of Cincinnati, Raymond Higgins, Gene Higgins and Arthur Higgins, all of Cleveland; daughters, Dorothy Decembly of Cleveland, Mary Bennett and Lillian Higgins, both of New Haven, Conn.; a sister, Viola Hill of Cincinnati; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Second Baptist Church, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick, and from 1 p.m. Friday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery.

George "Snakes" Hoffmeister, 91, of Covington, died at 11:50 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was a retired machinist with Cincinnati Milacron, and a member of St. Benedict Church in Covington, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. His wife, Mary Hoffmeister, died in 1981.

Survivors include sons, Jerry Hoffmeister of Edgewood, Jack Hoffmeister of Erlanger, Bob Hoffmeister of Covington and Doug Hoffmeister of Fort Thomas; daughters, Judy Hoffmeister, Mary Jo Hoffmeister and Joan Hoffmeister, all of Covington; a sister, Anna Mae Goldsbury of Covington; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict Church. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Clifford Donald Johnson, 70, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at his home. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elsmere.

Survivors include daughters, Donna Dicks of Cincinnati and Saundra Schley of Douglasville, Ga.; a brother, John Johnson of Florence; sisters, Mary Yates and Helen Kennedy, both of Elsmere; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Jones Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Margaret "Peggy" Russell Liebig, 73, of Florence, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Catholic Kolping Society and the Cincinnati Movie and Video Club. She also was a nurse with the American Red Cross. Her husband, Louis F. Liebig, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Louis K. Liebig of Melbourne, Fla.; sisters, Dorothy Martin and Angela Kadlmo, both of Cincinnati; and one grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Aloysius Church, Saylor Park, Ohio. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Neihard-Minges Funeral Home, Westwood, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to Shrine of the Holy Relics, in care of Marie Stein Center, 2291 St John's Road, Maria Stein, Ohio 45211; American Red Cross, 720 Sycamore St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202; or University Hospital Barrett Center, 234 Goodman Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.

Mary Frances Mahan, 71, of Florence, died Friday at her home. She was a teacher with Holmes, Dixie, Boone County and Williamstown schools in Kentucky and Indian Hill High School in Ohio, Southern Ohio College and also worked with the Dixie News newspaper. She was a member of Florence Christian Church, Florence Order of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine, Garden Club and Homemakers clubs. Her husband, Boyd W. Mahan, died in 1983.

Survivors include sons, Michael Mahan of Savannah, Ga., and Duane Mahan of Burlington; daughters, Yvonne Sherman of Lexington and Michele Bill of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Blanche L. Marsh, 70, of Taylor Mill, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday at her residence.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Alma J. Mullikin, 74, of Covington, died at 7:57 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Carl J. Mullikin, died in 1997.

Survivors include sons, Bill Mullikin and Rodney Mullikin, both of La tonia, Gary Mullikin of Redding, Calif., Rick Mullikin of Covington and Danny Mullikin of Moscow, Ohio; daughters, Patty Hardman of Latonia, Barbara Helton of Blanchester, Ohio, Anna Mullikin and Pam Mullikin, both of Covington, Darlene Lokesak of Taylor Mill and Carol Hammond of Cincinnati; 44 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Wanda Sue Kelly Nichols, 54, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Central Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Ricky Nichols of Harrison County; daughters, Cindy Phillips of Harrison County, Susie Slone of Lexington and Tam my Dean of Winchester; brothers, William Kelly and Junior Kelly, both of Harrison County; sisters, Renie Bryant, Brenda Thomas and Dorothy Tucker, all of Harrison County; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Colinette Ellen Richardson, 72, of Erlanger, died Sunday at her home. She was a retired teacher with Boone County Schools, and was a former member of Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Richardson; daughters, Sharon K. Cunningham of Otis, Ind., Jacqueline Friedley of Alexandria and JoEllen Canada of Erlanger; sons, Glendon Burgess Richardson and Jay Walton Richardson, both of Florence, and Jon Richardson of Erlanger; brothers, John Walton of Greencastle, Ind., William Walton of Arizona, Verne Walton Jr. of North Salem, Ind., and Charles Walton of Greenfield, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Florence V. Woestman Rickling, 81, of Highland Heights, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. She was a former Girl Scout leader, a softball coach and member of the St. Cecilia Auxiliary Knights of St. John.

Survivors include her husband, Robert C. Rickling; daughters, Mary Jo Edwards of Highland Heights, Florence "Sis" Kaffenberger of Alexandria and Peggy Penney of Cincinnati; a son, Robert F. Rickling of Lake Waynoka, Ohio; sisters, Mari Alice Heck of Cincinnati and Joan Putman of Carefree, Ark.; a brother, John Woestman of Lancaster, Pa.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Joseph Donald Skelton, 68, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a revenue officer with the Internal Revenue Service, a member of Florence Baptist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Suma Skelton; daughters, Kathy Martin of Union and Dr. Vicky Yunker of Louisville; sisters, Vicky Clark of Huntsville, Ala., and Glenda Mains of Newport; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence. Memorials are suggested to Salvation Army, 340 W. 10th St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Oscar Thacker, 79, of Dayton, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a maintenance worker with Diamond Shamrock Chemical Co., a member of Disabled American Veterans and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Thacker; daughters, Annie Hutchinson and Sandy Sucher, both of Dayton; sons, Danny Thacker and Ronald Thacker, both of Dayton; sisters, Ada McLemore of Pensacola, Fla., and Pearl Slone of Irvine; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Elbert Thompson Jr., 67, of Latonia, died Saturday at his home. He was a carpenter with Lawson Cabinet Makers, and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include sisters, Kathy Shore of Taylor Mill, Madeline Sorrels of Covington and Pat Turner of Port Orange, Fla.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills cemetery Chapel, Taylor Mill. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery. Catchen Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
