The Rev. Roger Louis Kriege, diocese vicar general, chancellor

People sought out the Rev. Roger Louis Kriege when they had a problem.

"He could help them work through it. He had that gift," said Margie Schack, an assistant chancellor in the Diocese of Covington.

"He had a practical mind and a compassionate heart, and he kept them together. He came across as very human and people recognized that quality in him."

Father Kriege, 60, of Erlanger, died at 6 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was the vicar general, chancellor for the Diocese of Covington, and a sacramental minister of the St. William Church in Williamstown.

Father Kriege attended Sacred Heart Elementary School in Bellevue and graduated from Newport Catholic High School in 1957. He was ordained in Rome in 1964, then returned to the Diocese of Covington.

His ministry included serving on the faculty of several high schools. He was the assistant director of the Marydale Retreat House in Erlanger from 1967-69, then returned to education as a teacher at St. Henry High School in Elsmere.

In 1979, Father Kriege began a long career in diocesan administration. In that year, he received the appointment of the diocese vocation director, followed by appointment as the chancellor of the Diocese of Covington in 1987. In 1995, he took on the added responsibility of sacramental minister of St. William Church and St. John Mission in Dividing Ridge.

In September 1996, Bishop Robert Muench conferred the additional titles of vicar general and moderator of diocesan offices on Father Kriege. The following year, Father Kriege was named to the Board of Diocesan Consultors.

In his spare time, Father Kriege enjoyed reading and playing golf.

He was diagnosed with colon cancer in early 1999 and, despite a series of painful and tiring treatments, continued to serve the people of the Catholic Center and the Diocese of Covington.
