Wilder's Carl Reis, Red Cross volunteer

Carl H. Reis of Wilder spent 32 years behind the wheel of a Keebler Biscuit Co. truck.

But he didn't give up road trips after he retired. Mr. Reis became a volunteer driver with the American Red Cross, taking people to doctor appointments and to the hospital.

"He really did care about people," said his wife of 56 years, Anne Reis.

"He was quiet, but very outgoing. He was very friendly. He never met a stranger."

Mr. Reis died Saturday morning at the Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. He was 87.

Mr. Reis was born in Cincinnati. He went to school in Ludlow and lived most of his life in Northern Kentucky.

Mr. Reis was a truck driver with Keebler more than three decades. His cargo was cookies and crackers.

"He did go out of state, but most of the time he was in Northern Kentucky and down in Kentucky as far as below Frankfort at times," said Mrs. Reis.

"He very much liked it. He liked to drive, he liked meeting people and talking to them."

After Mr. Reis retired in 1977, he had more time to play golf and volunteer with the Red Cross.

"He would take people to hospitals for cancer treatments, dialysis and X-rays - whatever they had to go to," said Mrs. Reis.

Mr. Reis was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport and his faith was very important to him, his wife said.
