Marcia Henry, pushed for tax to keep Beechwood School open

Without Marcia Mitchell Henry, Beechwood School in Fort Mitchell might have shut its doors 20 years ago.

When she and her family moved to Fort Mitchell in 1979, there was talk of closing the school. Mrs. Henry co-chaired, with her husband, a board that in 1981 fought for a tax levy to keep the school alive.

The school got the money and Mrs. Henry's two daughters later graduated from there.

Fighting for the school was typical of his wife, a former teacher who always thought to help other people, said Dr. Hugh Henry, her husband of 30 years.

"She genuinely wanted to do a greater good," he said. "She really left Beechwood and Fort Mitchell a much better place."

Mrs. Henry, 52, of Ryland, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was an active volunteer at Beechwood School for 12 years, held several PTA offices and was "Santa's House" chairwoman at the school.

She was also on the city's first tree board, was a worship chairman at her church and a co-chair and organizing committee member of the Kenton County Republican Women's Club. The club honored her with its lifetime achievement award last spring.

Mrs. Henry was a member of the Ryland Lakes Country Club, the Ryland Women's club and was a past president of the Fort Mitchell Garden Club. Mrs. Henry was chosen by her peers to be the first editor of Fort Mitchell Living magazine, a post she held for almost half a decade.
