Charles Coffman, operated store

For more than three decades, the Bellevue Ice House on Union Street has been a town staple. Charles Coffman ran it for 18 years, selling snacks and sodas to walk-in customers and wholesale ice to restaurants.

But last year, when cancer made him too sick to work, Mr. Coffman gave up the store.

A lifelong Newport resident, save the few years he lived in Fort Thomas and Highland Heights, he supported the local government and community, serving on advisory councils and coaching youth league Knothole Baseball.

"His life was about helping people whenever he could and in any way that he could," said his wife, Carol.

Mr. Coffman helped organize the Newport Youth Advisory Council, which for a short time gave teen-agers a voice in the community, and served on the Newport Citizen's Advisory Council. When there were fireworks over the river, he often helped organize the entertainment for the event, Mrs. Coffman said.
