Robert Schneider Sr., founder of ice cream shop

The candy and ice cream business was good for Robert A. Schneider Sr.

As a youngster, Mr. Schneider worked for Lily's Candies in Covington. He became so enthralled with the business that he opened his own store, Schneider's Sweet Shop in Bellevue, in 1939.

For the next 47 years, Mr. Schneider ran his shop, raised his children and became an institution in Campbell County.

"He was a very good guy. Everyone loved him," said a son, Robert Schneider Jr. of Fort Thomas.

"He was a wonderful man; there was no one who was better."

Mr. Schneider, 78, of Bellevue, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He founded Schneider's Sweet Shop in Bellevue, in 1939. He retired from the store in 1986.

Robert Schneider Sr. met his wife, Lillian Schneider, in an ice cream store in Newport when they were teenagers. The couple was married for 58 years and taught their children responsibility and kindness, Robert Schneider Jr. said.

"She was always there. They were a great couple," Robert Schneider said.

Mr. Schneider, who grew up in Newport, had his own recipes for candy and ice cream and taught them to his children, Robert Schneider said.

The formulas are so good that the ice cream and candy sell just as well during the winter as they do during the summer, Robert Schneider said.

"He knew what he was doing. He was good at what he did," Robert Schneider said. "He was dedicated to his family first, and then his business."
