Oscar 'Scottie' Scott, Falmouth's gentle barber

For years in Falmouth, it was a common sight to see barber Oscar F. "Scottie" Scott and his wife taking an evening stroll.

"Everybody in Falmouth knows that when he and his wife were living, they just got out and walked through their little community every evening," said a niece, Mary Ann Hornbeek of Butler.

Mrs. Hornbeek said the couple walked for exercise, to socialize with neighbors and, most importantly, to commune with each other: "They were very close."

Mr. Scott's wife, Nellie Wilson Scott, died in 1989 after 61 years of marriage.

Mr. Scott died Monday morning at River Valley Nursing Home in Butler.

He was 96 years old.

Mr. Scott was born and reared in Pendleton County. He operated Scottie's Barber Shop on Main Street in Falmouth for 50 years.

"He liked to talk to people," said Ms. Hornbeek. "He was a just a nice gentleman, with the emphasis on gentle. Of course, everybody liked him."

After Mr. Scott retired in 1975, he had more time to devote to his memberships.

He was a member of the Trinity Southern Baptist Church in Falmouth.

Mr. Scott also was a past master of Orion Lodge No. 222 F&AM in Falmouth, a 32nd Degree Mason with Indra Consistory Scottish Rite in Covington, and a past worthy patron of Falmouth Chapter No. 481 Order of the Eastern Star.

Mr. Scott is survived by a sister, Isabel Wilson of Falmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home in Falmouth.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. and Scottish Rite services at 7:30 p.m.

Burial will be in Butler Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Southern Baptist Church, Falmouth, Ky. 41040.

Donald Gene Adams, 65, of Williamstown, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired self-employed mechanic, a member of Knoxville Christian Church in Williamstown and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Velma Brumback Adams; a son, Steve Adams of Dry Ridge; daughters, Sheila Bowen of Demossville, Nancy Nix and Karen Kells, both of Dry Ridge; a brother, John C. "Jay" Adams of Dry Ridge; sisters, Edna Plummer of Demossville, Dorothy Lower of Williamstown and Lora Lower of Dry Ridge; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Broadridge Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to Knoxville Christian Church, Knoxville Road, Williamstown, Ky. 41097.

John W. Butler, 49, of Fort Mitchell, died Sunday at his home. He was a barber and partner in Hair Limited in the Drawbridge Inn in Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Seng Butler; a daughter, Pandora Morrow of Sadieville; a son, Tony W. Butler of Dry Ridge; parents, Bruce and Geraldine Butler of Tompkinsville; a sister, Toni Froedge of Fort Myers, Fla.; a brother, Barry Butler of Phoenix; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Carolyn L. Cornelius, 77, of Bellevue, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired clerk with Wadsworth Electric Co. and R. L. Polk Co., and a member of First Baptist Church of Bellevue. She was a member of Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky and Kersten O'Day VFW Post No. 2899 Ladies Auxiliary, Dayton. Her husband, Ernest Cornelius, died in 1980.

Survivors include sons, Ernest Cornelius of Covington and Gary Cornelius of Chicago; daughters, Judy Lovelace of Dayton and Mary Montgomery of Bellevue; sisters, Mildred Bartlett and Margaret Munson, both of Florence; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Kersten O'Day VFW Post No. 2899 Ladies Auxiliary, Sixth Avenue and Main Street, Dayton, Ky. 41074; or Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky, 300 Washington Ave., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.

Omalie Cox, 48, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a machinist with Boston Gear, Florence.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Cox; sons, Gary Cox and Daniel Cox, both of Florence; her parents, C. M. and Arkie Jones of Walton; a brother, Ralph Jones of Walton; sisters, Sharon Evans of Alexandria and Reda Powers of Union; and one grandson.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Loretta Catherine Hankins Darby, 81, of Petersburg, died at 10:45 a.m. Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker, a retired beautician with Queen Ann Shop in Cincinnati, and a member of Constance Church of the Brethren. She attended Petersburg Christian Church. Her husband, George Allen Darby, died in 1998. A son, Dennis Darby, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, George G. Darby of Petersburg; a daughter, Kathy Gibson of Dayton, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence. Richard S. Frederick, 58, of Augusta, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a newspaper deliveryman with The Kentucky Post and the Maysville Ledger-Independent.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys M. Frederick; sons, Rickey Frederick and Sherman Frederick, both of Augusta; a sister, Juanita Alice Litzinger of Maysville; brothers, James Henry Frederick of Florida and Rodney Frederick of Newport; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Augusta. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Elizabeth G. Hanifin, 75, of Edgewood, died at 11:40 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a volunteer with BeConcerned and the election campaigns of Jim Bunning. Her husband, C. Steve Hanifin, died in 1996.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Jones of Florence and Martha Mann of Villa Hills; a son, William S. Hanifin of Cincinnati; a sister, Mary Eleanor Spencer of Lakeland, Fla.; two grandsons; and three step-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 tonight at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Theresa J. Hodson, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

She was a long distance operator with AT&T;, and a member of St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas, the church Rosary Society, the Telephone Pioneers of America, Consumer Conference of Greater Cincinnati and YMCA of Cincinnati. Her husband, Merle Hodson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include nephews, Charles Lloyd of Melbourne and Earl Lloyd of Alexandria; and nieces, Ruth Mersman of Lima, Ohio, Betty Moher of Melbourne and Mary Thoman of the Westwood are of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Judy Klug, 49, of Taylor Mill, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was an employee of Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels in Northern Kentucky.

Survivors include a son, Kevin Klug of Covington; daughters, Jessica Pike of Florence and Tracey Klug of Norwood, Ohio; a brother, James Hunt of Mahopac, N.Y.; sisters, Pat Hamilton of Elsmere, Peggy Hunt and Edna Jordan, both of South Dade, Fla., and Debbie Zapetis of Franklin, N.C.; and one grandchild.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Erlanger Church of Christ. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

William H. Legner, 68, of Newport, died at 11:23 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired employee of Queen City Club, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Legner; sons, James Legner, Jason Legner, Joe Legner, Randy Legner Jr., Ronnie Spaulding and David Gibson, all of Newport; a daughter, Tonya Marie Legner of Newport; brothers, Joe Legner of Crescent Springs and Charles Legner ; and five grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.

William Thomas McCoy, 91, of Highland Heights, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a waiter and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a brother, Scott McCoy of Spring Lake, N.J.; two nieces and a nephew.

Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Dorothy Patterson, 73, of Glencoe, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Owenton First Baptist Church. Her husband, Guy Patterson, died in 1998.

Survivors include sons, Pat Patterson and Greg Patterson, both of Owen County; a daughter, Sheri Ecton of San Angelo, Texas; brothers, Donald Perkins of Owenton and Raymond Perkins of Lexington; a sister, Shirley Duvall of Owenton; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.
