Richard Leroy 'Cricket' Hill, Indian chief

Richard Leroy "Cricket" Hill was an Indian chief who was proud of his Native American heritage.

Mr. Hill's Indian name was Redhawk, and he was a member of the Mohican Piquet Tribe in Connecticut.

Mr. Hill's wife of 38 years, Beverly Jane Chartier Hill, said her husband was a proud man who spent many years fighting to improve the living conditions of Native Americans.

"He was fighting for recognition for his people. Many are poor and live in terrible conditions," Mrs. Hill said.

"He did a lot of research, and he has been trying to get more federal recognition for them. If he had recognition, it would allow his children and grandchildren to go to college without costs."

Mr. Hill, 58, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at his home. He was a former employee of Fullers Manufacturing Co. and Super America, both in Falmouth, and was a member of Oakland Christian Church in Pendleton County and Hardin-Browning VFW Post No. 109, Falmouth.

Mr. Hill attended church regularly, his wife said, and enjoyed speaking with people.

"My husband was very strong-willed," Mrs. Hill said.

"He wasn't going to be swayed by anyone. But he was very well-liked, too. Many people from our church admired Richard. He was very intelligent."

Mr. Hill is also survived by his sons, Richard G. Hill of Falmouth and Robert Joseph Hill of Norwich, Conn.; daughters, Sandra Jean Widmer of Portland, Ore., and Sherry Lee Moore of Powersville; brothers, Vernon Hill Jr. of Okeechobee, Fla., Arthur Eugene Hill of California and Walter Hill of Griswald, Conn.; sisters, Hattie Eva Wuick and Nancy Muench, both of Preston, Conn.; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Oakland Christian Church, Pendleton County. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 1 W. McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky. 41056; or American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

William P. Austing, 83, of Park Hills, died at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a retired vice president of Kentucky Federal Savings and Loan Association and a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Romaine Austing; sons, Gregg W. Austing of Park Hills and Thomas Austing of Fort Wright; a daughter, Leah Dugan of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Prayers will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to BAWAC Inc., 7970 Kentucky Drive, Florence, Ky. 41042; or The Point, 104 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Albert Lawrence Bertsch, 68, of Cold Spring, died Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. He was a retired ticket salesman for various charities, and a member of Catholic Order of Foresters Court No. 2094 and the Holy Name Society at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. He was a member of the board of directors of The Point, Covington.

Survivors include sisters, Sister Mary Eileen, C.D.P. of Burlington, Eileen Feldman of Columbus, Ohio, and Margaret Stormer of Alexandria; and a brother, Charles Bertsch of Cold Spring.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cold Spring. Memorials are suggested to The Point, 104 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Connie L. Shoemaker Brockman, 48, of Fairport, N.Y., formerly of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospice Unit in Rochester, N.Y. She was a homemaker and a former teacher with the Newport School District.

Survivors include her husband, former University of Cincinnati football player Don Brockman; daughters, Katie Brockman and Becky Brockman, both of Fairport; her mother, Bonnie Shoemaker of Newport; brothers, Mike Shoemaker of Cincinnati and David Shoemaker of Dayton; and a sister, Susie Gripshover of Florence.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Resurrection Church, Fairport. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home, Fairport. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Fairport.

Tina Sue Cain, 34, of Newport, died Sunday at her home.

Survivors include a son, Robert Cain of Cynthiana; daughters, Amberlyn Cain of Cynthiana and Kristen Cain of Cincinnati; her mother, Mary Miller Griffis of Cynthiana; a brother, Stacey Stidham of Cynthiana; and a sister, Jessie Whetsel of Cynthiana.

Services will be at 5 p.m. today at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana.

Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m.

Mary Velma Chapman, 84, of Warsaw, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert Chapman, died in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Bobby Keene Chapman of Independence; a daughter, Linda Lou Caldwell of Warsaw; a brother, Robert K. Crouch of Independence; five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Wanda Lee Gregory Crabtree, 51, of Latonia, died at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a nail technician with Nails Perfection by Wanda, Villa Hills.

Survivors include her mother, Nell Savage Flynn of Latonia; brothers, Ronnie Gregory and David Gregory, both of Latonia, Larry Gregory of Taylor Mill and Jeff Gregory of Elsmere; sisters, Phyllis Hall of Latonia, Teresa Gregory of Cincinnati and Lisa Gregory of Taylor Mill; and her fiance, Johnny Ray Jackson of Latonia.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Agnes Dorsey, 95, of Latonia, died at 5:21 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired postal worker with the Independence Post Office and a member of Bradford Lodge Order of the Eastern Star. She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Latonia, taught Sunday school classes at Amity Baptist Church in Latonia, and was a current member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Kenton County. Her husband, Charlie Dorsey, died in 1968. A son, Richard Dorsey, died in 1982.

Survivors include a sister, Maude Haynes of Latonia; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Edith "DeDe" Adams Gastauer, 77, of Williamstown, died at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a former tube tester with RCA, Cincinnati, and a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Williamstown. Her husband, Joseph Gastauer, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a brother, Ollie James Adams of Covington; and sisters, Ethel M. Webster and Aleene Adams, both of Williamstown, and Bessie Lovelace of Dry Ridge.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Williamstown. Memorials are suggested to Mount Carmel Baptist Church Building Fund, Mount Carmel Road, Williamstown, Ky. 41097.

Ernest Greer, 70, of Latonia, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Lamont Harris, 82, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was retired from Kentucky Motors and was a former manager of Wilcox Automotive, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Harris; daughters, Connie Daniels of Walton and Patricia Schuett of Belleview; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Children's Hospital Development Office, Gifts for Starshine Hospice, 3333 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

George E. Martin, 83, of Crescent Springs, died at 1:50 p.m. Sept. 10 at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a life insurance salesman with Massachusetts Mutual and a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Lakeside Park. He was a former teacher at Holmes High School, also teaching Sunday school classes at the church, and life insurance and estate planning classes to the public.

He was a member of the Junior Optimist Club of the Covington YMCA, and served on the board of the Cincinnati Automobile Club. He was a past president of the Cincinnati chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals and the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Estate Planning councils, and was a member of the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Association of Life Underwriters. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy H. Martin; a daughter, Nancy P. Cochran of Edgewood; a son, Robert S. Martin of Cincinnati; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, with a reception following. Mr. Martin bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Lucille McHugh, 86, of Dayton, Ohio, died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. A daughter, Joan Jayne, died earlier this year.

Survivors include her husband, William F. McHugh; a daughter, Jean Stacey of Fort Wright; a sister, Mabel Wasmer of Portsmouth, Ohio; brothers, Arvel Stamper of Ashland; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Charlotte Curtis Middleton, 73, of Cincinnati, died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Shannon United Methodist Church, Mays Lick. Her husband, Joseph C. Middleton, died in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Joe Middleton of Whitley City; a daughter, Pat Tilley of Batavia, Ohio; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery, Mays Lick.

Herbes L. Morgan, 84, of Louisville, formerly of Cynthiana, died Monday at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville. He was a funeral director with Coats Funeral Home in Williamstown, Smith-Reece Funeral Home in Cynthiana, and Manning & Dunn and Schoppenhorst & Underwood funeral homes in Louisville. He was a member of Portland Avenue Church of Christ in Shepherdsville.

Survivors include his wife, Birdie Cason Morgan; a daughter, Mary Buckley; a son, David Morgan; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will will begin there at 9 a.m. today. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Reba B. Oliver, 80, of LaGrange, formerly of Louisville, died Tuesday at Tri-County Baptist Hospital in LaGrange. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Merrill J. Oliver, Sr. died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Merrill J. Oliver Jr. of Louisville.

Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthews Baptist Church, St. Matthews. Visitation will begin there at 2:20 p.m. Saturday. Memorials are suggested to St. Matthews Baptist Church Building Fund, 3515 Grandview Ave., St. Matthews, Ky. 40207. Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, is handling arrangements.

Debbie K. Partin, 49, of Fort Thomas, died Monday in a fire at her home.

Survivors include several cousins.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Keith Allen Shouse, 26, of Florence, died Tuesday in Elsmere. He was a welder with Louvers and Dampers Inc., Boone County.

Survivors include his wife, Heather Elizabeth Turner Shouse; a son, Zachary Adrian Lee Shouse of Florence; his parents, Pierce and Billie Cain Shouse of Demossville; brothers, Lee L. Shouse of Summit, Ind., L. C. Shouse of Sparta, Pierce Shouse Jr. of Erlanger, and Boomer Shouse of Demossville; and sisters, Candy Williams of Matthew, N.C., Vickey Marksberry of Glencoe, Tina Long and Faith Shouse, both of Demossville.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family, in care of the funeral home, P. O. Box 6049, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Carol Ann Sloan, 47, of Hamilton, Ohio, formerly of Williamstown, died at 5 a.m. Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Pentecostal Highway of Holiness Church, Hamilton.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Sloan; sons, Spencer Sloan, Robert Sloan and Stacy Sloan, all of Hamilton; daughters, Jackie Brock and Donnita Sloan, both of Hamilton; her mother, Doris Kearns of Dry Ridge; brothers, Robert Dunn of Michigan, Eugene Dunn, Gayle Kearns, Gerald Kearns and Donnie Kearns, all of Dry Ridge; a sister, Donna Sue Hutchinson of Mount Zion; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pentecostal Highway of Holiness Church, Hamilton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, Hamilton. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hamilton.

George Thomas Wolnitzek, 67, of Park Hills, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a superintendent of quality control at Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati, and a former Kenton County commissioner.

Mr. Wolnitzek was a past president of the Kenton-Boone Cable Television Board and a past chairman of the Big Bone District Boy Scouts, and a member of the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission. He was a former manager of Adult Work Activity Centers Northern Kentucky Comprehensive Care, and served on the Rosedale Manor Task Force and the MainStrasse Development committee.

Mr. Wolnitzek coordinated the county Disaster Emergency Program, served as director of the Panorama Senior Citizens Board and was a Washington liaison for the Department of Transportation. He was a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright, a consultant to the Diocese of Covington, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Gardner Wolnitzek; daughters, Kimberly Small of Cincinnati, Beth Reisenberg of Fort Mitchell, Lisa Pohlgeers of Jacksonville, Fla., and Michelle Jones of Crestview Hills; a son, Mark D. Wolnitzek of Park Hills; brothers, Frank Wolnitzek of Florence and Harold Wolnitzek of Crescent Springs; sisters, Lucille Cox of Fort Mitchell and Rita King of Columbus, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will begin there at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Infant House, 10722 Wyscarver Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45241; or Fernside Center for Grieving Children, 2303 Indian Mound Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45212.
