Robert 'Bob' Doyle was 'best mechanic around'

There were a lot of folks in Sardis who wouldn't take their car anywhere else. Robert "Bob" Doyle, owner of Doyle's Service Station, was their mechanic.

"He was the best mechanic around," said his wife, Sereta Crawford Doyle.

Mr. Doyle was a mechanic for nearly 45 years before he retired. And, yes, he would often remark that they just don't make 'em like they used to, Mrs. Doyle said.

Mr. Doyle, 70, died at 8:55 p.m. Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville.

Even after he retired, Mr. Doyle offered mechanical advice and loved to tinker with cars.

"Someone would say, 'There's this kind of sound,' and he would say 'Well, that's your steering column,' " Mrs. Doyle said. "He always knew what it was."

Mr. Doyle earned a reputation as a good mechanic who went the extra mile.

"He would fool with 'em till he found out what was wrong," she said. "He never gave up."

Mr. Doyle's work didn't stop under the hood, either. If a customer's car was dirty, he'd often clean it, Mrs. Doyle said.

The Doyles met when Mrs. Doyle took her car to the station in 1979.

"It was those little blue eyes," she said. "I just couldn't resist."

They were married in a couple years later.

They enjoyed going for country drives, "just to see where the road went to."

Sometimes they would go to a restaurant in Maysville, or pay one of Mr. Doyle's sisters a surprise visit.

Everywhere they went, it seemed to Mrs. Doyle, people knew who her husband was.

He was their mechanic.
